Hi,
I have an app rather a bash script which is only compatible with Ubuntu 12.04. I want to run that script in 19.10. It does not work out-of-the-box.
Here a brief background: I want to install vspace for linux which is compatible only with 12.04 LTS on Ubuntu 19.10 so that I can use the ncomputing L230 thin client hardware. Is it even possible? If yes, can anyone guide me with the process in detail? I will be grateful to you.

[lubuntu] Problem installing lubuntu

Hello,
I am new to Ubuntu and have some problems to install it to my old desktop. I have windows 7 home premium now and I have become to hate windows, in many regards, so the time is come to try linux. I don't wan't to go to windows 10 anyways, it costs money, it's no good I hear and big brother see whatever you do, thats a bad thing.
I hope someone can help me with my problem. :-)

My system:
Windows 7 home premium 64 bit servicepack 1
MS 7597
Athlon II x4 640
8 gram
Samsung SSD 60 systemdisk

I have downloaded Lubuntu 19.10 amd64
I used unetbootin windows 675 to make a bootable USB(FAT32-8G)
In the BIOS I have tried everything, changed the boot sequenses and tried to boot from the USB. No matter what my pc doesn't show the USB. I have checked the USB and the files are there.
I would be grateful if anybody have an idea about what is wrong?
Tnx
San

[ubuntu] Can Ubuntu be a Drop-in-Replacement?

I got a new-to-me laptop and I'd like to transfer my old laptop to this one. I know that, back in my younger, unenlightened window$ days, you couldn't just take the hard drive out of one computer and drop it in another one and expect it to work due to hardware and driver issues.

My question is does Ubuntu suffer from this as well? Or is it able to adapt itself to the new hardware?

So will a MBR type boot capable USB stick with Mate 18.04 on it work with a GPT and UEFI system? I create it with my Windows 7 older system with MBR and BIOS, and then plug it into my newer Windows 10 system which has both the GPT and UEFI and try to boot it up?

Calamares Boost.Python error in job "machineid"

Hi everyone. I had the 16.04 LTS version of lubuntu and I was told that upgrading it I would have better wifi reception, so I ran the update command from terminal and after it was done, the pc shut itself down and booted itself in a loop. So I had to install the latest 19.04 lubuntu from a USB on top of the old lubuntu, but after getting done with the partition section of the installation, I get this error:

https://imgur.com/a/hyXoKTf

And its so rare that the few people I found online with the same issue couldnt fix it. Should I install another distro?

Create a FAX server to send and receive fax

$

Dear users,

what I want to do has already been requested and documented by many users, but I can't find a step-by-step guide to do it.

I want to do a fax server to:
  • send a fax by a gui from a pdf
  • receive faxes ONLY when I want (when I "power on" the fax) and save them in pdf in a folder with their metadatas (time, sender, etc...) in a text file or mysql
  • check if the phone line is free or busy
  • store in a text file (or mysql) a list of all calls made or received from that phone line (made/received, number, time, duration)

Now I have these elements:
  • an ubuntu server
  • a raspberry pi 3 b+
  • a mysql server and database specially created
  • I can use mysql

Then I need:
  • a hardware to connect the phone line to server (usb-rj11)
  • software to do all

If possible, I want to create the same software for both ubuntu and raspberry. But now I can use only raspberry.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks

I may not have the version number correct. It is the one in the software centre.

The program has been giving me errors about being unable to load 3 plugins, then I choose disable and the program loads.

When I start:
tart
"com.jcraft.jsch.org.netbeans.invalidException:Net igso:
/home/users/:netbeans/10.0/modules/com-jcraft-jsch.jar

cannot start com.jcraft jsch state remains installed after start

When I tried to run this hello world.java test file, this the error I get:

run:
Error: Could not find or load main class com.mydomain.myproject.HelloWorld
Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: com.mydomain.myproject.HelloWorld
/home/richard/.cache/netbeans/10.0/executor-snippets/run.xml:111: The following error occurred while executing this line:
/home/richard/.cache/netbeans/10.0/executor-snippets/run.xml:94: Jav.

a returned: 1
BUILD FAILED (total time: 3 seconds)

This error may have always been there, even in the previous version.

I tried to install the C/C++ plugin,so that must have caused the opening error

I tried reinstalling Netbeans, but that didn't fix the problem.

Thanks

[ubuntu] Dual Boot Options

$

I am in the process of building a new computer. I would like to dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 18.04. Would I be better off using two drives, one for windows the other for Ubuntu? I would then select the drive in the BIOS.

flatpak install nuvola eu.tiliado.NuvolaAppGoogleCalendar

My problem started with "flatpak install nuvola eu.tiliado.NuvolaAppGoogleCalendar". First I was told to "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/atareao" I did that. The install seemed to work just fine but then I was told to "flatpak run eu.tiliado.NuvolaAppGoogleCalendar" but there was no nuvola. Then it just got worse. I then went to ubuntu forums to see if there was any activity on this stuff - there was. The problem is that the newest was over a year old and it went waaay back.

So.... I had google calendar up and running before I started all of this stuff and its running fine. What I was trying to do was to start google calendar up when I turned on my machine. I now have yet another mess.
Here is some terminal stuff:
Code:

[sudo] password for greg:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

greg@gregdown:~$ sudo apt install flatpak

flatpak is already the newest version (1.0.9-0ubuntu0.1).

I also checked synaptic and the missing dependencies are not available there.

So, any thoughts would be appreciated (be kind)...........

When booting up, grub shows up just fine, but the arrow keys are not working so I can not move down, and boot into windows 10.

[ubuntu] 19.10, Python package local HTML docs cannot be opened in Chromium

$

Hi folks,

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 19.10. I installed my usual stack of Python data science tools -- Numpy, Scipy, Matplotlib, Scikit-learn, and Pandas. Canonical's repository includes optional documentation packages for each of these Python add-ons which are installed in /usr/share/doc. I don't like depending on an Internet connection to read programming docs, so I always download these and open them in a browser. I've been using Chromium for years.

When I tried to follow my various Chromium bookmarks, which link to file:///usr/share/doc/python...index.html, I got an error message from Chromium: "Your file was not found. It may have been moved or deleted. ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND". But the file URL was visible in the URL bar. If I tried to drag and drop these files into Chromium, bypassing my bookmarks, I got the same result.

I opened the HTML files in a text editor, and they were clearly present and undamaged. This led me to try opening them in Firefox, which worked. I have a workaround for now.

This may not be an Ubuntu problem. Who is responsible for the build of Chromium in the Canonical repositories? It appears that Google shares source code for the core of the Chrome browser, but it doesn't compile a finished product for Canonical. I may need to file a bug report.

Thanks for your advice!

Error Install XUBUNTU in Laptop MSI GE75 Raider 9SG - HDs not recognized by installer

Hi.

I'm looking for help cause I've been trying to install UBUNTU (Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu ...)
next to a windows on an MSI GE75 Raider 9SG laptop for days.

I am trying to install from a bootable USB. The problem is that the USB installer does not recognize the internal hard drives of the notebook. It only recognizes the installer's own USB device (16Gbs) and calls it /dev/sda1.

It is possible to see it in the following image. This is the final result of the installation, where it only allows the option to see the USB device. It does not give options to see other devices or install UBUNTU in a place other than
/dev/sda

The basic specifications of the laptop manufacturer are:

Brand: MSI
Model: GE75 Raider 9SG
CPU: Up to 9th Gen. Intel® Core ™ i9 Processor
CHIPSET: Intel® HM370
MEMORY TYPE: DDR4-2666 - 64Gbs

Many tutorials coincide on the following points:

- Remove safe mode at system startup
- Suppress quick start
- Suppress hibernate mode

All this I have already done and the result is always the same: It only recognizes the installation USB itself.
I attach different screenshots of the BIOS, current partitioning that I have and the final window where only the device is seen on /dev/sda

Thanks in advance, Emilio

can't get grub working after install of win10 - UEFI system

I can't seem to get grub working and making me crazy... Some background... Had win7 and ubuntu dual booting. Had some issues with a win7 update failure but got it mostly fixed and installed win10. Had an additional drive installed and for some reason it installed the boot loader on the second drive and win10 on the first (first was desired location). Used EasyBCD to fix the boot loader location issue and removed the second drive until I get things set up.

Now it boot to win10 no matter what. Have tried boot repair disk and numerous ways to install grub.

Here is a summary from boot repair and log of boot repair which failed.
sda1 is win7
sda2 is ubuntu
sda3 is win10

Installation problem

Dear All,

Failed to install ubuntu 18.04.3 or 19.10 to Lenovo Yoga S740 laptop.
Problem is that when I try to install Ubuntu it does not see the hard drive doing ubuntu installation using usb stick.

With 18.04.3 usb installation, after selection of keyboard, language and updates, the problem is with the screen has top left: "Installation type", upper box is empty, lower has /dev/sda
When clicking install now, it complains about "No root filesystem is defined"
Pressing "+" crashes the installer.

I tried various boot-option combinations with no success.

Is the laptop just too new?

Sorry for my previous post, I did not know it was prohibited to ask people who know answer to my question.

WSL Windows 10 Pro: Wrong ubuntu (16 instead of 18)

Hello!

I installed ubuntu from the windows store. The package is called "Ubuntu" and should be, as stated, the latest 18.04.
When I open the wsl terminal and enter lsb_release -a, I get:

$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS
Release: 16.04
Codename: xenial

In the Microsoft Store there are 3 different releases:

- Ubuntu: https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9NBLGGH4MSV6
- Ubuntu 16.04: https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9PJN388HP8C9
- Ubuntu 18.04: https://www.microsoft.com/store/productId/9N9TNGVNDL3Q

I installed the "Ubuntu" package, which should ship 18.04 (as mentionned here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WSL).

Any ideas?

[ubuntu] Grub menu not showing when dual booting Win10/Ubuntu

$

Hi,

I've installed Ubuntu 18.04 (I'll update later) on dual boot on a HP laptop running Windows 10.

Grub is not showing at startup so computer directly boot on Windows 10. I can boot on Ubuntu going to BIOS' boot menu.
- I've tried forcing it using the following command on Windows:
Code:

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi
- I've tried to update grub.
- I've tried to use boot-repair. Boot-repair doesn't fixed it, even after setting bootmgr to
Code:

sda2/efi/ubuntu/shimx64.efi
(according to the pop-up that showed up when boot-repair was done).
You can find here boot-repair's logs: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/XN6Y96pGHv/

How to bring back Grub menu at boot (or any menu to dual boot)?

Thanks !
