[ubuntu] GRUB issue blocks apt/dpkg after update to 19.10

Hello!
I'm running Ubunru 19.04, now freshly updated to 19.10. And now I can't get apt to behave.

First, I have an issue with grub:
Code:

grub-install: warning: Cannot read EFI Boot* variables.
grub-install: warning: efivarfs_get_variable: read failed: Interrupted system call.
grub-install: warning: efi_get_variable: ops->get_variable failed: Interrupted system call.
grub-install: error: failed to register the EFI boot entry: Interrupted system call

This comes from the fact, that my motherboard (Intel's S5520HC and -UR) has UEFI boot settings set as read only from 'outside' of IPMI or UEFI setup (I have to manually create boot entry with path to grubx64.efi). So far, I somehow was able to live with that, but now I can't use apt anymore, since it just borks out at the grub, despite not being asked to touch it:

I have given up any hope to see the error in grub being fixed, or rather handled (issue is common on LGA1366 server boards, but these are getting a bit old), but I'd like to tell apt to ignore it.

How do I do that?

This just happened during the routine package update:

kubuntu 18.04 Boot devices (/dev/sda1 on /boot/efi and /dev/sda2 on /) are accessible. Even though the update has failed some files in /boot where changed e.g. /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi, and now I am afraid to reboot. Should I restore /boot to the latest working backup before rebooting?

I need some help. What will I need to do to install Ubuntu Studio on a brand new hard drive? Any help and/or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I have a HP Spectre x360 Covertible and it is not booting into GRUB. Instead, it is going straight to windows.

I uncheck the fastboot from Windows 10, disabled secured boot.

The error code with the boot fix tool is the following:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/g5y3Ct3xzs/

Please help!

Thanks,

Alex

I have been trying to get this graphics card to work on ubuntu for over a year now with no luck, but i think now i am able.
Not too long ago my nvidia drivers were blacklisted under the following command...

Anyway trying to switch to the nvidia driver through the regular nvidia-settings panel has not worked, currently my settings say i am using "Intel® HD Graphics 530 (Skylake GT2)" for "graphics", anyone know what i should do to get the nvidia 430 driver to run ?

[ubuntu] Boot issues after 19.10 install on Thinkpad 430s

Hi Ubuntu Forums,

my boot procedure seems to get stuck from time to time on my Thinkpad 430s after installing 19.10 (fresh install). I didn't see this problem with 18.04.

The boot is stuck at the ubuntu logo and this dotted bar and it doesn't continue.
Trying to switch to a different login with ctrl+alt+FX doesn't work.
Normally it works again after forcing power off and rebooting a couple of times.

I ran the command journalctl -g "error|failed" for a normal boot and a failed boot but I don't know how to interpret the information?

For some reason I can't upload the files as attachment here, they don't show up as uploaded even after I selected the file and clicked "upload".

So, here is output inlined:

[ubuntu] How to replace a HDD with an SSD

$

0
I am not using a UEFI based computer. The SSD has less space on it than the HDD.

I am using a dual-boot system that starts up letting me select the operating system with GRUB 2. The system originally had a copy of Windows 7 running on it. I installed a copy of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS alongside the Windows OS using an Ubuntu installation flash drive.

I want to create a new bootable duel boot SSD from the HDD. I wish to use dd and Gparted from a bootable Ubuntu installation flash drive to create the bootable SSD.

My partitions look like this from Gparted:

I have never done anything like this before, but after a little research online this seems like the best approach:

1. Copy the Windows partitions onto the SSD. Use a recovery disk to repair the MBR so that it boots to Windows 7.

From the HDD I will need to copy the MBR (/dev/sda1), the Windows OS partition (/dev/sda2) and the Windows 7 recovery image (/dev/sda3). I am assuming that when I repair the MBR with the recovery disk it will also tell the Windows OS where to find the Windows 7 recovery image (/dev/sda3) should I ever need it.

Now if I am to copy these partitions to the SSD, I need to make one NTFS partition exactly as big as the MBR on the SSD. I also will need to make an NTFS partition on the far right end of the SSD exactly as big as the recovery image partition (/dev/sda3) on the HDD. Then in the remaining space on the SSD I will make another NTFS partition as big as or greater than the Windows 7 OS partition (/dev/sda2).

I am assuming that you can choose whatever size you want to make a partition when you are making it with Gparted.

What I don't know is how can I find out the exact size of the MBR (/dev/sda1) and the recovery image partition (/dev/sda3) using the Ubuntu tools available?

I have another question regarding partitioning and formatting the SSD with Gparted. When you ask Gparted to make a partition table, it prompts you to choose an MSDOS partition table. That's what I want, right?

2. After I get the Windows 7 installation working, I then plan to install Ubuntu from the bootable Ubuntu installation media. This will also install GRUB2 into the MBR.

3. Then I will use Gparted from the Ubuntu installation media to shrink the Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda4) on the HDD so that it will fit onto the Ubuntu partition on the SSD.

4. Then I will use Gparted to overwrite the Ubuntu partition on the SSD with the Ubuntu partition (/dev/sda4) from the HDD. After doing so I should be able to boot either operating system from the GRUB2 boot menu.

unreliable wifi 18.04

Hi,
Since loading 18.04 on my Dell Inspiron laptop the wifi connection to my home router has been very erratic. Whenever it lost the connection I would test the connection with my tablet which would invariably work (not always, I do sometimes have a problem with the landline internet here in France). I have been using 14.04 for the last year and only ever had problems when the router itself would cut out for a few seconds. Again, I used to test this with my tablet to make sure it wasn't the computer running 14.04.
When I lose the connection now the wifi symbol changes to a question mark. Since my tablet works I assume this means that the computer isn't recognising the signal from the router. To make it more confusing I just tried to tether my phone to my laptop, again something I did often with 14.04 with no problems, and though this time I got the wifi symbol, it still wouldn't connect to the internet.
I previously asked another couple of questions, but someone merged them with some earlier questions of mine far down the list so they have disappeared. Maybe I should ask them one at a time when I have sorted out the wifi.
Thanks for any help.

Firstly, I apologize if I'm in the wrong section. I'm trying to dual boot Kali to run along with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. How do I go about doing this. I originally got Ubuntu on my pc via USB. Ubuntu is the main and only OS on my PC at the moment. It has 6gb and also 1tb ssd installed. If anyone can help please comment below.

Kernet subversion update control

$

Hi,

We have decided to install Cylance on some of our linux, non-vendor, Ubuntu distributions. Unfortunately, Cylance has been rolling out Agents that support only subversions dated back about 1 - 2 months. Ideally we would want to be on the latest kernel subversion. In this case though, we would need to aim for the latest subversion that is supported by the latest version of the Cylance agent.

I've looked for various related threads, but I can't seem to find a concrete answer to address this challenge. Is there a way to control which kernel subversion a Linux distribution we are on? We want to have the ability to upgrade to a specific distribution, without upgrading to the latest, and also to be able to downgrade if possible.

And example would be if currently running Ubuntu 18.0.4.3 LTS on some distributions with a kernel subversion of 4.15.0-70-generic, we would need to downgrade back to 4.15.0-66.

Is this feasible?

Thanks!
Daniel

Create live USB with persistence

I just created an Ubuntu 19.1 live USB flash drive, using Rufus in Windows and ubuntu-19.10-desktop-amd64.iso, and the USB drive has no persistence. If I change the time zone from UTC to EST, it does not persist to the next session, which reverts back to UTC. What do I need to do to create a live USB drive that has persistence?

Ubuntu 16.04 : Linux 4.4.0-148-generic #174-Ubuntu SMP Tue May 7 12:20:14 UTC 2019 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Hello,

Since three weeks, I've an issue with my Ubuntu. I can't use Synaptic or any dpkg command as there is always a process dpkg running.

Code:

#ps ef |grep dpkg
root      4428  4427  0 déc.11 pts/0  00:00:00 /usr/bin/perl -w /usr/share/debconf/frontend /var/lib/dpkg/info/docker.io.postinst configure 18.09.7-0ubuntu1~16.04.4
root      4434  4428  0 déc.11 pts/0  00:00:00 /bin/sh /var/lib/dpkg/info/docker.io.postinst configure 18.09.7-0ubuntu1~16.04.4

If I kill the process, of course, I've to run "dpkg --configure -a".
Code:

$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
Paramétrage de docker.io (18.09.7-0ubuntu1~16.04.5) ...
insserv: warning: script 'S15notes-enable-ptrace' missing LSB tags and overrides
insserv: warning: script 'K01vpnagentd_init' missing LSB tags and overrides
insserv: warning: script 'K01ibm-wclient' missing LSB tags and overrides

Then the that's still wait forever.

Looking at process, I see
Code:

#ps ef |grep dpkg

“Install alongside Windows 10” gone from Ubuntu 18.04 Installer

I’m trying to install Ubuntu 18.04 alongside Win10, but after booting from the USB the option to install Ubuntu alongside the existing OS is gone.

I have shrunk existing partitions to create 90 GB worth of an unallocated space, which always did the trick. It doesn’t now: the option is gone.

Does it have something to do with the fact, that my disk has 4 partitions already? (c:/ windows 183 GB, 350 MB EFI System Partition, 619 MB OEM Partition and 202 GB Data partition, all preconfigured).

What do I do?

Can’t even begin to install Kubuntu 19.10

I’m kind of new to Linux. I have used Red Hat in college (many years ago) and Ubuntu a few years back, but I’m definitely rusty. I want to try Kubuntu by dual booting my Windows 10 laptop. (I should note I’m not new to dual booting - I dual-booted Ubuntu and Jolicloud in the past.) I downloaded 19.10 64-bit from the official site and checked the SHA-256 which matched. I’ve tried using both Rufus and unetbootin on 2 different flash drives; a 32GB SanDisk and a 64GB PNY. (With unetbootin I tried the Live option.) So I reboot my Dell laptop and hit F12 and choose to boot from the USB drive. In every instance, I get the screen in the first image. If I try any of the first 3 options, or if I wait more than 5 seconds, the screen goes black, there is a small amount of activity on the flash drive (indicates by its lights), and then everything goes dead. I have no idea what’s going wrong or what to try. I ran Speccy so you could see my hardware, to see if there’s an incompatibility I don’t know about, which is image 2. Should I try the LTS release next or is there something else I’m missing?

Upgrade from 19.04 to 19.10 problem

I started with Ubuntu 18.04 root on ZFS following the directions here.

Then I upgraded to 19.04 no problem.

But I encountered errors when I upgraded to 19.10.

First it said "Could not install friendly-recovery".

Then it said "Could not install "grub-efi-amd64".

Finally it said "Could not install the upgrades. The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unstable state. A recovery will nor run (dpkg --configure -a). Upgrade complete but there were errors during the upgrade process."

I couldn't launch a terminal so I rebooted. As far as I see everything is working properly but dpkg --configure -a still produces errors.

I would like to start with the grub error.

I have labeled line 162, its just a closing curly bracket. I cant find the opening curly bracket that should match it.

I am wondering if I should file a bug report.
