Dual Boot - Two Hard drives - Both encrypted - Both Ubuntu

$

I had a dual boot system with two hard drives both were Linux one was my Desktop Running Kubuntu 14.04 and the other was Lubuntu 14.04. The Lubuntu was my media system. I ended up upgrading my Desktop to 18.04 Kubuntu but it ended up breaking my dual boot and I can't figure this one out. I ran os-prober thinking it would look at the boot drives for the OSs. It didn't find anything. Guess I was wrong as I had to mount the second hard drive so I used udiskctl unlock. I then tried to mount it but it mapped it to the same point as my current OS (kubuntu-vg) so it gave me an error. I then changed the name by using vgrename and I looked in the boot drive of 14.04 and saw it was called usernamepc so I just called it this with vgrename. I then was able to mount it. I ran op-prober and it saw it so I ran update-grub and it picked it up but when I try to boot into it says kernel not found and then drops me to a shell. I've done some searches but they mostly came up with windows 10 plus Ubuntu or the two Ubuntus were unencrypted. Not sure of the next step.

[ubuntu] network UNCLAIMED - No Wi-Fi Adapter Found

product: RTL8821CE PCIe Wireless Adapter
Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.

This is found with:
Code:

lshw -C network
Although, I am unable to reinstall:
Code:

bcmwl-kernel-source
It seems a lot of people are fixing it by reinstalling that, and I am unable to install it because the package is not found.
So it does not seem to exist.

I'm attempting to do apt-get update since I just logged into the new Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS on my laptop, but am not able to update because the network card is not functioning.
What do I do?

Then the upgrade keeps giving me this error on a vlc dependency

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
vlc : Depends: vlc-bin (= 2.2.8-2~xenial3) but it is not installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try using -f.
So I try this ..

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 18.04 Dual Boot, Automatic Repair Loop with Windows

$

Hi!
I recently dual-booted my laptop to have both Ubuntu 18.04 and Windows 10 on separate partitions on my only SSD drive on my laptop.
However, after a few days, while trying to boot Windows, the system would go into a loop of Automatic Repair, and would get stuck there. I am still able to access Ubuntu from the GRUB menu, but Windows always loops into the Automatic Repair-Restart cycle.

Things I have tried:
boot-repair: Output here: https://pastebin.com/84UreJSK
Disbaled Fast-bootup and Secure-bootup
Tried system recovery, but loops back to the same error.

Any help on this issue, would be gladly appreciated.

What should I do here?

apt upgrade breaks fresh Ubuntu 19.10 install

I have a fresh install of 19.10 on my laptop.

It would not successfully reboot after the reboot required to finish upgrade.

I took me a while to figure out that I was habitually doing:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

based on experience with earlier Ubuntu installations and this is what broke the system.

Currently the Ubuntu Software gui tool says the "Software is up to date".

But, apt list --upgradabable says:

drew@drew-ThinkPad-T520:~$ apt list --upgradable
Listing... Done
gzip/eoan-updates 1.10-0ubuntu3.1 amd64 [upgradable from: 1.10-0ubuntu3]

update-notifier/eoan-updates 3.192.26.1 amd64 [upgradable from: 3.192.26]
drew@drew-ThinkPad-T520:~$

If I do a sudo apt upgrade all these updates are installed

But, the next reboot hangs

with: ubuntu followed by an row a ubuntu icon as a superscript with 5 dots below that cycle from red to white this never moves on to a login prompt.
I'm assuming it's the libpam stuff that's breaking the system.

Obviously there is stuff going on here that I don't understand.

Can't boot after install alongside Windows

I removed several partitions and then reinstalled Ubuntu alongside an existing Windows 7 installation. Now grub tells me "error: no such device: <uuid>". I'm not sure how to proceed.

I have used a boot repair disk to generate a report which I hope will be helpful: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/3crxgBgRVt/.

Thanks!

Update 4.15 kernel to 5.3 on 18.04 LTS

The computer has Xubuntu 18.04 LTS, up to date. However, it is installed on a Thinkpad P73 (which I love!), which comes with the Intel® AX200 Wi-Fi 6 802.11AX (2 x 2) & Bluetooth® 5.0. I don't care about Bluetooth, but I frequently need wifi, and the wireless driver is not available until the 5.2 kernel. I found several web pages which purport to provide ways to install the driver on older kernels, but they all failed. I don't think I'm going to get the wifi on this computer working until I get the 5.3 kernel.

I could do a dist-upgrade to 19.10, but that's three dist-upgrades. I'm a big fan of dist-upgrades, but three is too much. I could wait until April and then do a dist-upgrade, which I plan to do anyway, but that leaves me without wifi for the next five months.

In Synaptic I find a number of packages with 'linux-' and '5.3,' and if I could do the upgrade just by installing packages that would be easy. Even a dummy like me could do that. But figuring out which packages to install is beyond me. And I don't even know if it is possible to install 5.3 on 18.04.

So is it possible? And if so, how? Is there a 'for dummies' guide?

Two video drivers at the same time?

I ported Xubuntu 18.04 (up to date) from my old computer to my new Thinkpad P73. The display on the old computer was 1920x1080, but the new computer is 3840x2160, and has an NVIDIA Quadro T2000 4GB. I anticipated video difficulties, in fact a black screen would not have surprised me. In fact, the display came up just as it should, 3840x2160. However, it took a long time to boot, and a lot of that time was spent trying and giving up on various NVIDIA drivers. Don't ask me why, but I had half a dozen NVIDIA drivers installed, plus the nouveau driver as well. At that time I used lshw -c video and discovered that the NVIDIA chip was 'unclaimed' and that the video was being handled by the Intel chip. To fix this I used Synaptic to uninstall all of the NVIDIA drivers, and then install just one - the 440 driver.

Holding my breath I rebooted, and was greeted with a black screen. Maybe I uninstalled too many packages. I had previously downloaded the proprietary driver from NVIDIA (441), so I decided to install it. It took half an hour before I gave up trying to stop the X service, and decided to reboot to a root shell instead. When I rebooted I didn't hit Esc soon enough to get the Grub menu and it continued to boot. But this time it booted normally. Apparently it found the 440 driver that I had installed with Synaptic previously.

I was curious how it managed to boot, so I did lshw -c video again. And this is what I got:

Code:

*-display
      description: VGA compatible controller
      product: NVIDIA Corporation
      vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
      physical id: 0
      bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0

      width: 64 bits
      clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
      configuration: driver=nvidia latency=0
      resources: irq:185 memory:ea000000-eaffffff memory:a0000000-afffffff memory:b0000000-b1ffffff ioport:2000(size=128) memory:eb080000-eb0fffff
  *-display

      vendor: Intel Corporation
      physical id: 2
      bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0

      resources: irq:183 memory:e9000000-e9ffffff memory:c0000000-cfffffff ioport:3000(size=64) memory:c0000-dffff

Modinfo says that the NVIDIA hardware is using the 440 driver.

I am thoroughly confused. How can both be running at the same time? If I was a video driver I would be sorely vexed. I thought video drivers and displays were supposed to be monogamous. How can two video chips be sending data to the same monitor at the same time? Can someone clue me in here?

Failure when installing updates.

When an update , contains a new kernel , it doesn't remove all the obsolete older kernels..

The boot partition gets full of old kernels , and it results in an upgrade failure..

Using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

New Computer Build dual boot recommendations

I've just built a new desktop with a 500 GB M.2 drive and a 4TB disc drive. I intend to dual boot Win 10 and Ubuntu 19.10. I mainly use Ubuntu but need Win for a few things.
In my prior dual boots, Windows always needed to be first install on the drive... Is this still the case?
Also, should I put the OS's alone on the M.2 and software & data on hard drive or OS's plus software on M.2 and just data on hard drive?
Thanks for advice (or directions to another similar post, tutorial)

HP Pavillion Gaming Laptop / NVIDIA problems

Hi, i am trying to get my ubuntu running in my HP Pavilion 15-cx0075ng, geForce GTX1050Ti

The Main install runs fine. I have to add "nomodeset" to grub in order to not get a boot freeze.

Problems:
# my FN keys for brightness and monitor switch are not working. I tried adding "acpi_osi=" to grub. But without success

Main Problem:
I cannot switch to my external monitor. Tried several options. But all without success

Tried Solutions:
1. Purge Nvidia, install ubuntu-devices autoinstall
Using: Nvidia 440 properitary
Result: None.
> Ubunt Display settings does not recognize a second display
> Nvidia Settings Window is complete empty when opening

2. Using Community drivers > same result

3. Install source 440 and installing
Result: horrible
After installing the source 440 drivers my internal display will not work any more. And the output will only be sent to my external monitor. I made the install while the external monitor was not connected. After my reboot. Ubuntu was loading on internal monitor. When the login screen was about to be displayed, the monitor changed to log View. When I then plug in my external monitor mylogin screen is displayed.
First I thought this mismatched happened because I installed the drivers with the external monitor connected. But it didn't matter. I made a complete new ubuntu install, than added the source drivers without ever attaching my external monitor. But the outcome is the same.

Conclusion:
When using 440 source. The output signal only goes to HDMI and internal is gone.
I can revert this by purge nvidia + ubuntu-drivers autoinstall

Questions:
1. I don't know if I cannot switch to external because of a not working driver or because of a not functioning FN key.
# FN key volume is working
# FN key brightness is not

# on my previous laptops FN key and drivers were always working out of the box. Also monitor switch

2. NVIDIA drivers.
What would be the right way to install the appropriate drivers and get them working?
Some advice 440 source, some 440 ppa.
But for me:
440 ppa >> no nvidia settings
440 source >> nvidia settings are displayed correctly, with GPU, temperature etc; but I have no more internal display i can use ....
