Hi, I tried to install Lubuntu 18.04 on a old computer that has Windows XP, since apparently the BIOS (Phoeni-Award Bios v6.00PG) did not support booting from usb or CD / DVD, on Windows XP boot I installed Plop Boot Manager , to allow me to boot from the usb ...
I restarted the computer and was able to boot from the usb with lubuntu 18.04 (desktop) that I downloaded from https://lubuntu.me/downloads/, with the .torrent in Transmission (I have another computer with Ubuntu 18.04), I selected The Spanish language (I ' m from Mexico), then it appeared in the Lubuntu logo screen, select install Lubuntu and press enter, but then some errors appeared on the screen:

Hello,
On Saturday, I installed ubuntu 19.10 with the latest version of kernel 5.4.1. Everything is fine without any problems. However, in the update manager I have some patches for kernel version 5.3.0 available.
How to get rid of it?
I don't think I need these updates, since I'm using a newer version of the kernel?

[ubuntu] Install Ubuntu on Second Hard Drive, keeping Windows on others?

I installed Ubuntu alongside Windows on my largest hard drive, partitioning about 80gb of space to it. After a Windows update, I lost access to the installed partition, and could not find any way to fix it, even after a lot of searching, so I figured I'd just delete it, and use my second hard drive to install it separately and overwrite it.

I wanted to wipe one hard drive and fully install Windows on it.

Firstly, would that prevent any windows updates from affecting it?

Secondly, when I try to install, I get this:-

I don't know why it it's detecting Windows at all, but I want to make sure I don't mess up my other hard drives, as I transferred everything off my smallest so I could use it solely for Linux. Is it fine to do this on the whole hard drive, considering it thinks there is no OS at all on the computer?

Many thanks.

After clean install, grubbed up

This is a continuation of my "unmet dependencies" thread https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread....0#post13903890

Impavidus and rsteinmetz....

For the last few weeks I have been attempting to eliminate possible hardware issues that might be preventing the reinstall of 16.04 in my dual boot laptop.
I also talked with a local repair shop about the issues and possible remedies.
I got a SSD of the same size as the suspect HDD and successfully imaged the drive into the new item. I do like the improvement the SSD provides.
With that done I tried to boot to a live DVD iso. When I got an "[errno 5]" describing a possible faulty CD/DVD disc or drive and since the DVD had previously proven its function in an install into a desktop machine, I swapped out the drive for a spare one .
I then downloaded the 16.04.6 iso, verified the sha256sum and burned it a DVD using a win7 box at work.
Then: "Failed to open\EFI\Boot\mmx64.efi Not Found, Failed to load image \EFI\Boot mmx64.efi: Not found, Failed to start MokManager: Not Found, Something has gone seriously wrong: import_mok_state () failed". I had the same results with both of the live DVDs.
After a bunch of searches, reading about not only the Ubuntu part of this but also the still functioning Windows 8.1 portion of the machine, I went down the dark path to eliminate any possible Windows influences that might be hanging up the Ubuntu install such as in disabling the secure boot.
Thus far I have made it to a "GNU GRUB version2.02~beta2-36Ubuntu3.22" header screen with grub> prompt. I hit the TAB key and get a list of commands. I have since been reading the Grub manual and playing with the commands. The "help" command erupts with a description list that is longer than the screen height so I can only study the last portion of the list of explanations. Any advice as how to pause this rapidly scrolling display would really be appreciated.
I did get the "Zfs-bootfs" to allow the"exit" command to boot back the the win partition. I have been experimenting with other items in the command list but without sense of the proper syntax or file names it has been few hits and mostly error messages. The grub manual does not appear to explain things at this grub prompt level. Linux commands are not successful either. I have also tried without success to use this grub prompt to find a grub.cfg file or where in the SSD grub itself is located.
If you can point to a better explanation of how to use this interface please post.

[ubuntu] Problems with Ubuntu 19.10 on Dell E6500

I have a Dell E6500 (4GB RAM, NVIDIA 256MB VGA, Core 2) and it has an original Windows Vista running on its hard disk and there is no problem with the hardware.

I installed Ubuntu 18.04, 18.10 and 19.04 on a USB stick and did not have major problems. My main problem with 18.04 is that it had CPU usage 100% on boot which I solved by running the below right after booting:

sudo systemctl stop systemd-udevd systemd-udevd-control.socket systemd-udevd-kernel.socket
sudo systemctl start systemd-udevd systemd-udevd-control.socket systemd-udevd-kernel.socket

18.10 and 19.04 did not have any major problems but I preferred to stick with 18.04 until 19.10 was released.

I tried installing 19.10 three times and I had the exact same problems in all three times after the installing the very first update:
1) I have funny pixels that keep blinking on an off. These pixels never show when I "Try Ubuntu". See picture below (pixels in below screenshot have been drawn and are not the original). The originals come in three colors: Purple, Red and White pixels. They look more like the Alien in Space Invaders lying on its side. The blinking pixels did not go away when I switched from NVIDIA to Nouveau driver. I noticed that on certain sessions, they are more frequent than others. When the pixels are persistent and during shutdown I get a black screen instead of the Ubuntu Purple color and the 5 red/white dots are in purple squares.
Ubuntu19-10.jpg
2) After the first update, the grub gets damaged and I get "Bad Environment Block" and I have to clear it and also reset the "GRUB".
3) In all versions of Ubuntu (18.04, 18.10, 19.04, 19.10) on that Dell, it hangs every few minutes anywhere from 3 to 10 seconds which makes it unbearable to use. Example I click on Maximize or Scroll the Page and I have to wait for around 10 seconds for it to do so. In System Monitor it shows 1.6 GB out of 3.9 GB used and CPU usage is around 4%. Then it works normally for a couple of minutes and then it hangs again.

I never had any of above problems when I installed Mint 18.1 on the same USB stick.

I only install Chrome, Visual Studio Code and FileZilla using Ubuntu Software. During installation I set the timezone to Beirut/Lebanon and use the Full Installation with Installation of Third Party Drivers and Update while installing.

I wish to use Ubuntu 19.10 because of its speed and fluidity. I would appreciate it if anyone can advise on fixing these issues.

Graphics issues so cant install

Hi I am trying to resurrect a vista based
Compaq Presario v6000 laptop.
To use as a basic web machine for my workshop.

Installing
lubuntu-19.04-desktop-amd64 from USB

Hardware is nforce 630M/GeForce7150m based
1280x800 display
and a broadcom B/g wifi card

The Boot menu loads fine, but if i progress to load the live desktop environment, it seems to make it to the desktop but the display is messed up. it looks like the screen is chopped in to segments and ghosted over itself. I cant see anything to try and rectify the issue.
if i try the Ubuntu installer this experiences the same Graphical issues right from boot.

I can get a console window using shortcut keys but its hard to read.. and i cant see what ive typed without hitting return a few times

I can blindly set the Resolution using xrandr. and while this does seem to do something, It doesnt fix the issue.
If i use the autoconfig flag in xrandir I get the "hourglass" and the machine seems to crash.

I'm thinking i may need graphics drivers.
I can download the drivers to the USB on another machine which come in a .run format but I have no idea how to load them.

I am completely new to linux more or less.

Suggestions?
Cheers.

Hello, I am new to all this and I have tried to install ubuntu version 16, and it has installed everything to the point of the warning that tells me to restart the system, I press the button and at the time of rebooting then this black screen comes out and there is no option no problem. I do not know what to do,
I add that I have done it through a USB.
Thank you for your help and I hope you have a solution

Installation gone Wrong..

Hi everyone,
I recently developed interest in Linux, my experience with it blew my mind and i decided to dump Windows for it. So i did Ubuntu installation on my laptop via USB side by side with my existing windows OS and it worked perfectly fine. At some point i decided i want to do away with the Windows OS and just have only Ubuntu running on my laptop, so did a reinstall and this time choose to erase the disk option option during installation. Now i am having issues because the installation type page goes blank; seems like the problem has to do with boot disk partition, i am a newbie and confuse.

Everything seem to have gone wrong with the installation, i will appreciate getting help to resolve this issue. I understand that i might not have provided enough information but would be glad to provide my details on request.

[lubuntu] Loss of Trackpad function

I have Lubuntu 18.04.3 installed on my Dell Inspiron 14-3452 laptop and I have been cruising dumb, fat, and happy for several years until the release of kernal 4.15.0-72. Since I use a wireless mouse when I am at home I did not notice that my trackpad was no longer functioning until I attempted to use it outside of my home. After research on the Internet and attempting various fixes, I thought perhaps I should check the kernal. When I booted from a previous kernal ( 4.15.0-70) the trackpad function was restored. While this is a work around is there a fix for the trackpad to enable me to use the current kernal for my distro.

At the end of installation when it says restart your computer, my laptop freezes. Incompatibility problems? Problem appears when installing 16.04 or 18.04. For fun i tried to install 14.04 and it was fast and it worked, but i want newer version installed. I read about Nvidia problems but not sure what to do.
Thanks for helping me in advance!

[ubuntu] Ubuntu Server 18 on RAID 1 UEFI won't boot after copying EFI partition

$

On past versions of Ubuntu Server, I have successfully installed to a raid 1 with "https://askubuntu.com/questions/1066028/install-ubuntu-18-04-desktop-with-raid-1-and-lvm-on-machine-with-uefi-bios" or similar without any problems. I could boot from either drive, but not with 18.04.

My config is two 4TB drives (and this same config worked fine on previous versions)
sda1 and sdb1 1G efi (bootable)
sda2 and sdb2 10G raid to md0 as swap swap
sda3 and sdb3 50G raid to ext4-md1 mounts to /
sda4 and sdb4 Remainder raid to ext4-md2 mounts to /data

On past versions, after install, I verify the active efi and copy the efi partition to the second drive and all was well. I could boot from either drive and recover a failed drive in the raid 1.

On 18.04 (using the alternate) after I copy the efi, the boot goes to the grub prompt. If I force to the other drive, i get insert bootable device...

Ideas? Suggestions?

Thank You!!!

[kubuntu] Unable to boot to Ubuntu after install

I started with a clean install of Windows 10 in UEFI mode. I've tried twice to install Kubuntu 18.04.3. There are no errors during the install. When it finishes and I take out the USB drive, it does not boot to the boot loader, just boots straight to Win10.

I have turned off fast boot and secure boot. I created the partitions by creating free space (100GB). I have 16GB of RAM, but did an 8GB swap and the rest for root /

The first time I tried the default to boot the boot loader on sda1. The second time I tried putting it on the Ext4 drive where / was mounted.

What am I missing?

no sound and stuttering video after update on 14.04

Hi All,
I hope this is the right forum for update problems. Thankfully it's been a few years since I needed any help, but this has has stumped me. I am a great believer in 'if it works, leave it alone', especially since I am not very good with computers. But last night I succumbed to the machine's repeated offer of updates and pressed the button. After restarting I now have a very slow computer, no sound and videos such as youtube which jerk constantly. Everything that involves graphics such as opening anything is laborious and slow.
The sound output shows 'Dummy output' and the additional drivers shows what is in the the attached screenshot. I guess its a graphics card issue, but my guesses could be dangerous.
The computer is a Dell Inspiron on which I loaded 14.04 from new in 2016. The kernal is 3.13.0-170-generic.
Thanks for any help.

[xubuntu] Move Xubuntu 18.04 to new computer

My current computer is a six-year old System76 that originally had Xubuntu 13.10, then dist-upgraded to 14.04, then to 16.04, and recently to 18.04. It still works fine, but lusting for power I bought a Lenovo P73 that will be delivered today.

Now, I know that I will get lots of replies extolling the virtues of a fresh install, but I refuse. I have over 250 .desktop files in /usr/share/applications, half of which are not in the repos and which took a lot of effort to install. It would take me half an hour just to get the desktop configured the way I want it, and lots more time to get applications set up. I do a lot of work with ancient languages (Greek, Latin, Samskrit), plus I am a movie fan and have 50+ applications for encoding videos, editing subtitles, etc. When I did the fresh install of 13.10 it took me over a week to get things set up the way I needed them. Therefore, if you want to post a 'fresh install' admonition, save your time. :)

There is a greater than zero possibility that a fresh install may become the only way to do it, and I might end up condemned to a week of configuration travails, but I will not do so without giving an OS transfer my best shot.

The new computer will come with Windows 10 Home on a 1TB NVMe drive. I plan to wipe it out and partition the drive with a 100G partition for / and 900G for /home. I can handle this much easily. The part that I need help with is transferring / and /home from my old computer to the new one. Copying the files is no problem; making the / partition bootable is.

I have searched the forums and I find lots of posts about UEFI, but none discuss transferring Ubuntu to the new computer. For what it's worth, I don't care about security for the boot process.

If this has already been covered elsewhere, a link would be helpful. Otherwise, all suggestions will be gratefully received!

[ubuntu] How to fix the boot when all the files in /boot

I'v set the /boot to a USB pendrive in the Ubuntu 18.04 installer so I can't boot Ubuntu without the USB. Just then the bootable USB isn't bootable simply because I have two partitions and one of which contains old ext4 signature so I fixed it in another computer with GParted. I want to make the USB bootable again, and my Ubuntu has already been booted and login the desktop, maybe files /boot has no modified, can fix the boot easier because I hear that just update the GRUB?

Nvidia profile freezes computer after login

I've been working on my Huawei Matebook X Pro for a while and I haven't got any problems with the nvidia drivers until now. Suddenly I can't initiate my profile if I select the nvidia profile from the Nvidia X Server Settings. I can work fine if I select the intel profile, but if I choose the nvidia profile, then I log out and try to login again the screen freezes. I can login with Wayland with the nvidia profile, but the GPU is not recognize in this case. I really can't understand what is happening since yesterday everything was working fine. I normally use the 440 driver, but I've tried with the 390 and 430 drivers and still the same problem.
I am using Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS

[kubuntu] Unable to install critical Libpng12-0 dependency

$

A significant number of major software vendors are still releasing Linux software requiring Libpng12-0 as a dependency. I have tried a number of methods to get this library to install correctly in Kubuntu 19.10 and vanilla Ubuntu 18.04 LTS but with no success. As recommended I have used the Ubuntu .deb library from the Xenial repository and tried several packages to install it but get the same libpng12.so.0 file not found error reported by others. The most progress I made was using Synpatic but with the same outcome - file not found.

I don't know enough about the structure of the library to determine whether there is critical information missing in the Ubuntu library or changes in the way Ubuntu handles libraries may be to blame. It is also possible that the issue lies with inadequate installation resolution between 32 and 64 bit architectures.

I have critical technical software that is supposed to be compatible with 18.04 LTS but clearly isn't and the vendor, Picotech, is unresponsive. Some users have managed to install the application successfully but it looks like this has been on upgraded machines that have retained Libpng12-0 due to other dependencies.

This Libpng12-0 issue is an ongoing problem for a lot of people and I really need to get this sorted. Can anyone shed additional light on this?

In my laptop I have windows 10 installed.
I try to install ubuntu 18.04.03 LTS on my computer.
However, when I installed, at the beginning system directly boot to the linux.
Probably I have done a mistake which had been done a lot. But I can not fix it now.
Before I had installed ubuntu on my windows desktop computer. A similar problem happened.
Then I had used `boot-repair` program. And I had fixed the same problem.
But now when I try the recommended button in boot-repair.
System stall with `unhide boot menu. This may require several minutes`

Ubuntu 19.10 and java in firefox

$

Hello,

I have a following issue,
I need to have firefox in my Ubuntu 19.10 running with java but to be honest - I don't know what to do.
The requirements are thaty java engine should be in vewrsion 8.
SO I installed java 8

root@dominik:/home/dominik/Downloads# java -version
openjdk version "1.8.0_232-ea"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_232-ea-8u232-b09-0ubuntu1-b09)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.232-b09, mixed mode)

and strange think is that when typing javac -version:

root@dominik:/home/dominik/Downloads# javac -version
javac 13.0.1

I have 13 version

but the another thing is that I need to have java support in firefox, I know that this is realised by icedtea-plugin but I don't have such package in my Ubintu version,

can anyone help me with that ?

Best Regards
