Windows 10 and Ubuntu won't boot properly

$

Hello community,

I installed Ubuntu onto my laptop, but when I tried to boot windows 10 I was unable to do so. Then I tried to fix things myself by using testdisk, but I then accidentally made Ubuntu boot with regards to the same partition that my windows was booting from. I now do not have access to both and I've had to use a USB for temporary access to Ubuntu. I then used the boot repair program and got the link after the analyses was over. I'm not sure if the paste2 link that I received from boor-repair has too much information to share online, so if someone can also help me with being selective of what information is fine to post. May I please receive assistance in correcting the errors made. My priority would be to boot windows 10 and if possible I would like to have dual capability with Ubuntu. I am a beginner so I am not too knowledgeable with the correct terminology, but i am trying. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance.

Sincerely,
Vergal3

Manually updating trusty powerpc-smp kernel to backported HWE kernel

Hi,

I'm getting the following message when ssh-ing into a headless 14.04.5 powerpc-smp (32-bit) on G4 hardware:

"WARNING: Security updates for your current Hardware Enablement Stack ended on 2016-08-04"

The unsupported kernel is 4.2.0-42-powerpc-smp ppc

After some investigation, I've learned that I need to upgrade to a 4.4x kernel for continuing HWE support through 2019.

A candidate, linux-image-4.4.0-64-powerpc-smp is available. Will installing this satisfy the HWE requirement going forward?

Will it pull through dependencies, or do I need to also install linux-headers-4.4.0-64 and linux-headers-4.4.0-64-powerpc-smp?

Any reason to suppose doing this would break my server?

Thanks for any advice!

Installation with UEFI/Sandy Bridge E5-2670/Supermicro X9Dai Kernel Panic

Hello,

i can not install 16.04 and 16.10 on my Rig. The System is Supermicro X9Dai with Bios 3.2 in UEFI Mode, 96GB Ram, Two Sandy Bridge E5-2670 in Hyperthread Mode. I tried also to reduce the cores to 1 or 2 in Bios.

I prepared the Boot USB Stick with Rufus:
1. Downloaded the ISO
2. Used GPT for UEFI
3. Used Fat32 as File System
4. Wrote the IOS in ISO Mode, not DD.

The System Boots from the USB Stick until I get a Kernel Panic (I get a Kernel Panic with Fedora too).
Kernel panic - not syncing: stack-protector: Kernel stack is corrupted in: fffffsomeaddress

I attach the Call Trace as attachment.

I did not find anything comparable with google.IMG_1266.jpgIMG_1267.jpg

Thanks for help,

I'm trying to install lunbuntu 16.10 32bit version on HP pavilion 525W

Current OS: Windows XP Pro 32 bit
pentium 4 2.4ghz
1GB RAM
100GB HDD
8MB (that's megabytes) graphics memory

I burned the iso onto a CD then I was presented with the main menu when I booted from the CD. After I choose to install lubuntu, the lubuntu logo appears and hangs for a long time and then I am presented with the following error message. Something about unexpected child device config size... does the computer not have the required minimum hardware requirements or it is not compatible for lubuntu? Can i install puppy linux on this computer? Thanks for the help.

[ubuntu] No LUKS password prompt for Ubuntu installation with manual partitioning

$

If I install Ubuntu with LUKS, asking it to encrypt the entire drive, I can get it to boot properly (after adding startup.nsh and setting nosplash in Grub).

However, when I use manual partitioning so that the installer doesn't overwrite specific partitions, I cannot get the boot sequence to prompt for the LUKS password. Instead, after a minute or so, the boot falls into initramfs (whatever that is :().

My test setup is similar to the default whole-disk encryption:
  • /dev/sda1 EFI System Partition
  • /dev/sda2 Boot partition
  • /dev/sda3 Unused space
  • /dev/sda4 LUKS partition containing an LVM group, which contains a swap partition and a root partition.

All partitions start off empty, so that the installer can format and fill them as needed.

I ran the installer. I don't know where to place the bootloader, so I've tried both /dev/sda and the default /dev/dm-0 (which points to the encrypted, unlocked partition sda4_crypt).

Once I have added startup.nsh (bug #1665329) and fixed Grub (another bug), I can boot into the system as far as the Grub prompt.

Then, after I select Ubuntu, it sits for about a minute before dropping into a prompt for initramfs, something about which I know nothing. (Using the installer's default whole-disk encryption does not have this problem.)

Do you have any idea what I can do to fix this so that I can enter the LUKS password and continue to boot?

[ubuntu] Problems installing dual boot Ubuntu/Windows

$

I am trying to install Ubuntu 16.04.1 onto a laptop with an existing Windows 10 Home installation, intending to dual boot, and am getting the message "This computer currently has no detected operating systems" during the installation. I've set the Boot Mode in the BIOS to Legacy, if that makes any difference.

I see the recommended solution seems to be https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread....8#post12486498 , but in there it says quite clearly that if I see a nice Ubuntu graphical screen when booting I should "stop!!!". Okay, so I've stopped. Where should I go from here?

I've tried the "something else" option in the "Installation Type" screen, and got the following:

/dev/sda

freespace

1MB
/dev/sda1
fat32
272MB
/dev/sda2
ntfs
16MB
/dev/sda3
ntfs
477730MB
freespace

472596MB
/dev/sda4
ntfs
26843MB
/dev/sda5
ntfs
1048MB
/dev/sda6
ntfs
20646MB
/dev/sda7
fat32
1048MB
fresspace

0MB
When I tried to use the 472596MB freespace area as ext4 and to "Install Now" it complained that "The partition table format in use on your disks normally requires you to create a separate partition for boot loader code. This partition should be marked for use as a "Reserved BIOS boot area" and should be at least 1MB in size. Note that this is not the same as a partition mounted on /boot." So I thought to myself, "Okay, I'll use that 1MB of free space right at the start then, and tried to set that as a "Reserved BIOS boot area". Uh uh. I immediately got an error message saying "Unable to satisfy all the constraints on the partition." Do what with a rubber hose? What constraints? How do I satisfy them? Help (please)!

Installing Ubuntu in Windows 10 without dual booting

Just purchased a new netbook with Windows 10 installed. I want to install Ubuntu 16.10 and really would prefer not to have to dual-boot. Is that even possible? If not, can I get a copy of say Windows 7 or earlier and wipe the HD and then install Ubuntu 16.10 without Windows? If so, how do I accomplish this?

Thanks,

[ubuntu] After ubuntu server upgrade from 14.04 lts to 16.04lts I encounter samba errors

Hello to everybody,
I just upgrade the ubuntu server to 16.04lts (apt-get update apt-get upgrade do-release-upgrade). I made many times this operation into other servers without any problems, but this time I found one BIG problem. Googling doesn't helps me to find a solution. The problem is: SAMBA doesn't work (because it doesn't start...) I tried to uninstall it with "--purge autoremove" and install it again but I see some errors:
Initctl: unable to connect to Upstart: Failed to connect to socket /com/ubuntu/upstart: Connection refused
insserv: waring: script 'screen-cleanup' missing LSB tags and overrides

etc
I see the same errors when I uninstall SAMBA, also when I try to show the status of the service.
systemctl shows errors on smbd.service nmbd.service and winbind.service
For example "systemctl status smbd.service" shows: (I'm manually typing it....)
smbd.service - LSB: start Samba SMB/CIFS daemon (smbd)
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/smbd; bad; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since ...
Process: xxxx ExecStart=/etc/init.d/smbd start (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
Starting LSB: start Samba SMB/CIFS daemon (smbd)....
* Starting SMB/CIFS daemon smbd
....fail
smbd.service: Control process exited, code=exited, status=1
Failed to Start LSB: start Samba SMB/CIFS daemon (smbd)

journalctl -xe shows also:
smbd.service: Unit entered failed state
smbd.service: Failed with result 'exit-code'

Are there somebody that can helps me please to find a solution?
Thanks, really many thanks in advance.
Ciao!

[server] Is a PXE server right for this?

$

I currently flash Windows to new machines at my work with a USB thumb drive running Ubuntu. The drive runs live with a persistent partition that contains a .IMG file that gets DD'd to the actual hard drive of the target machine. All works off a little script I put together. I can even set things up to pull an alternative .IMG from across the network.

Which got me thinking...

Can I set up a PXE server to boot my custom Ubuntu+script over the network to the client PC? Eliminating the thumb drive altogether? For that matter, can a PXE server use a .IMG and just write it directly to the client hard drive?

If I can just set the client machine to network boot and everything just runs from there that would be fantastic.

[SOLVED] Boots to f12

I after installing a clean install to 16.04.2 all was well. Then I I got the message that some updates had come in after the release do I wish to install? I said yes and installed the updates.

Now whenever I BOOT the computer it starts a rapid beep and f12 appears and I have to add the boot order in. So I did another clean install and the same thing happens on boot or re-start.

How to fix? Dell optiplex computer. Now I find if I hit enter the beeping stops and it loads.

Well golleeee... after a morning of trying to solve this I noticed I had a stuck key. End of problem.

Installation of Nvidia driver does not finish

Hello,

I installed Ubuntu 16.04.2 on my XMG C405 with GTX 965m.

When I try to install any Nvidia drivers the installation stops at about 95%. I cannot abort this. Rebooting does not "repair" this problem. E.g. when I want to install any other software I get this error:
Code:

E: Could not ge lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily
unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

I tried to install the drivers directly after Ubuntu installation via "Additional Drivers utility" and after reinstalling Ubuntu with:
Code:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt update

and then "Additional Drivers utility"

Tried it now for 10 times without success...

Does someone has an idea where the problem could be?

Thanks for your help!

Hi,

I'm trying to install/configure the Canonical Livepatch service on one of my servers, however whenever I try to run the livepatch service, I get the following error from the service startup logs:

Code:

My problem is that the server is running version 16.04.02:

Is this limitation on purpose? It seems to me that a minor version upgrade should be supported as well, or is this not the case?

Issue booting new install on i7 Asus Zenbook

Hey guys, this cry out for help comes after much searching online and trial \ error testing. (Error being the predominant result for me) ... I'd like to point out to start that I am not a Linux guru (far from) but have used Debian for some years and am quite familiar with the basics ...

So, why am I pulling my hair out and begging here for a little assistance?

Well I've brought a new laptop. It is a Asus Zenbook i7 Intel chipset UX360UAK <Model

At first I wanted to stick with Debian but the install of Jessie 8 failed miserably with no mouse pad working and WiFi off and screen resolution a mess. So I abandoned that.

Upon research I found that I should be using mint or ubuntu (as others had successfully used these on this machine) so off I went and got the latest Ubuntu on a USB live stick.

The live stick boots perfectly and its a great user experience. So I wiped the 512GB SSD internal drive using "disks" with an ext4 format. Then proceeded to install from the live USB.

The install seems successful, and I apply encryption during the install. (Although upon the following issues I have tried without the encryption too, to no avail)

After the install, the laptop reboots and just hangs on the loading front page where I enter the key. I get a message "cryptsetup: sda3 set up successfully"

But that's it, no further... I'm pulling my hair out... So I started a live session again and ran boot-repair from ppa:yannubuntu\boot-repair

This following mess is my output... (It still didn't solve anything)

I hope someone here can point me in the right direction. I would REALLLLLLLY appreciate any help :(

Thanks in advance guys

Hi,

[ubuntu] ubuntu-16.04-mini-i386.iso installer throws "isolinux.bin missing or corrupt."

I am trying to install Lubuntu 16.04 to my old Asus A6B00L laptop, but keep getting "isolinux.bin missing or corrupt" error when booting from the USB installer.
This same USB installer starts fluently in my ASRock B150M desktop, and I have also wrote it with this computer, under Linux Mint 18.
I have tried to write it with a tool called USB Image Writer, as well as with dd:

Code:

sudo dd if=ubuntu-16.04-mini-i386.iso of=/dev/sdb
The USB stick has following partitions written to it:

Code:

~ $ sudo fdisk -l
...
Disk /dev/sdb: 249,4 MiB, 261488640 bytes, 510720 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disklabel type: dos
Disk identifier: 0x69bab23c

Device    Boot Start  End Sectors Size Id Type
/dev/sdb1  *        0 86015  86016  42M 17 Hidden HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sdb2      86016 98303  12288  6M  1 FAT12

Based on other posts considering this error message, and the fact that it works on my desktop, I would assume that this is some kind of incompability between laptop BIOS and something on USB installer. I installed Lubuntu 14.04 to this laptop from the same USB stick by using ubuntu-14.04-mini-i386.iso. I think I wrote it with UnetBootin or dd under Lubuntu 14.04. I might still try this installer from Linux Mint 18 too.

Other than that, any ideas how I could get Lubuntu into that laptop of mine? The reason I am using mini installer in the first place is that the only USB stick this laptop recognizes on bootup is my old 256MB Swissmemory, and that cannot have any other installers but mini. CD/DVD drive of the laptop doesn't work.
