Hi,
I'm trying to make a bootable USB stick from a verified image and find that it won't boot. So after burning with "sudo dd if=<omitted> of=/dev/sdc", I check with "fdisk -l" and find its boot partition is "hidden HPFS/NTFS". This seems not correct since it's not booting. Did I do something wrong?
Thanks,
hvn

So I have got a brand new Dell XPS 13 9360 (pre-installed OS: Windows 10 Home 64-bit).
I chose to install Ubuntu 16.04.2 in UEFI mode and create dual-boot with Windows 10.
I have changed RAID to AHCI, disabled secure boot, and disabled both fast boot in Windows 10 and in BIOS.
When I installed Ubuntu I encountered this error:
Unable to install GRUB in /dev/nvme0n1.
Executing 'grub-install /dev/nvme0n1' failed.
This is a fatal error.
I have tried even to create a separate ESP partition at the beginning of the free-space after the Windows partitions.
Any help appreciated.

Hello,
I have tried boot Ubuntu 16.10/17.04 on my Acer Spin1 (CPU: Apollo Lake Intel Celeron N3450/GPU: Intel HD Graphics 500/BIOS: InsydeH20 Setup Utility Rev. 5.0, Version: 1.01/RAM: 4GB/HDD: eMMC 32GB) but I had no luck with it. Originally there was Windows 10 installed but I formatted HDD with the Arch linux (the only one linux distribution which I could boot properly). What have I tried:
- disabled Secure Boot option in BIOS
- added an UEFI file as trusted for executing from the USB with installed Ubuntu in BIOS
- created bootable USB with rufus or directly from a computer with Ubuntu installed
The problem is when I try to boot the Ubuntu from USB I only see white underscore character in the upper-left corner of the screen and Acer logo in the middle of the screen. Do you have some idea about this situation? Is it something wrong with grub or do I need to wait for new kernel 4.10 in Ubuntu 17.04? Personally, I have no idea how I can boot Ubuntu on the Acer Spin1 properly and also in this situation I have no logs which I can provided for you (sorry for my English). Thank you.

I'm upgrading my Ubuntu for the very first time ever from 14.04 LTS to 16.04.2 LTS.
It seemed to go normal, and did the restart, but it's been at the Ubuntu splash screen/logo with the five dots for over 30 minutes now.
Is this normal? Is it doing something? The hard drive light is flashing a lot still but I'm beginning to wonder.
I have an Intel i3 (3.3 ghz) - Gateway SX2870.

Hi, after installing the new 4.8.0-36 kernel up date the system will not wake from suspend.
Mouse movements and touch pad do not wake it up.
It's a black screen that I can see the pointer and move it for awhile and then the screen will just freeze.
A hard boot gives me nothing but a blank dark screen.
I have reinstalled and turned any screen suspend options off.
It was working fine until the kernel upgrade.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Bob.

I was having problems with ubuntu and opted for a fresh install. That turned out to be a dumb idea... I am not using a dvd drive and there is ~ NO WAY ~ it is too hot for my computer where I am at. Does anyone know a possible fix?
I am installing from a flash drive. I am using a samsung 850 evo and smart diagnostics say the drive is 100% functional. Also posting this on the same computer using windows.

Hello everyone!
I have brand new Asus GL552VW-DM777T-32 and it came to me with preinstalled Windows 10. I tried to install ubuntu 16.04 as dual boot but some errors came out and i don't know how to fix them.
When i run graphics installation wizard all i can see is orange dots animation that getting stuck after a while.
When i change view to cli output i can see error like this:
[ 15. 655099] tpm_crb MSFT0101:00: can't request region for resource [mem 0xfed400080-0xfed40fff]
After that nothing more happen.
I also tried Ubuntu 16.10 but nothing changes expect that i saw two errors. tpm_crb like above and:
lwlwifi 0000:02:00.0 Unsupported splx structure
Before attempting to installation process i have disabled SecureBoot option in UEFI.
Unfortunately I couldn't find option to disable TPM module.
All attempts were made with bootable USB stick.
Is there anything that i can do to bypass this problem?

I've added a couple of PPAs a while ago to my Trusty installation, now thinking again about it I'd like to completely remove those, as in replacing the packages installed by those PPAs with default Trusty versions and revert this installation to a standard Trusty version.
One of those was the menulibre PPA, which I don't care much about since I've learned to manually edit the config files in Lubuntu to customize the menus - the other one was a multimedia PPA which supplied stuff not yet available in Trusty and more advanced versions of available packages.
I'm worried about this one, since I can see I have some stuff installed (libraries, codecs) that I'm afraid would break something if removed and replaced.
What would be the best way to proceed here? I can use manual procedures if needed, such as first editing my sources to remove the PPA lines, then track down the packages installed by it and remove them, and finally install the default packages.
But is that advisable? Should I use automated tools instead, such as ppa-purge? Of course I'd be taking a backup before, just in case: if anything, I'm going to keep my configuration files for the applications that I'm going to reinstall, and I guess that --purge remove is going to get rid of those.

I was attempting to install updates for Ubuntu 16.04 yesterday. Never had any issues with updating beforehand (have used 16.04 for about a month or so) but this time the updates stalled about halfway through. I clicked 'install' again and the same thing occurred...the bar made it halfway through the install button before getting stuck again. I tried again upon a restart about an hour later. The first time I attempted to install the bar got to the end of the install button but nothing else occurred and an attempt to reinstall ended up with the same result as the two prior times.
I'm hesitant to try another installation attempt. For one, I don't know if it'll work or not, and for two, I have no interest in screwing my system up with an update that may install improperly. I've had issues on other operating systems (Mint and Lubuntu) where issues with update application have led to system hangs. I don't want to deal with that again. I'd like to just abort whatever's going on right now and solve everything fully.

I usually stick to LTS Ubuntu, but for a new laptop running 16.04, I was forced to install a mainline kernel, 4.9.0 to get hardware support.
This kernel will not show up in a distro for awhile, but there are fixes, etc, that I would like to take advantage of and maybe even
get the last couple of items working. I understand that this is not updated and I now must install manually.
I don't want to break more than I fix and I understand that there are a few different approaches.
I didn't really want to go this way but most everything is working great.
Now the question is what is generally the best strategy going forward?
Sorry if there is a thread somewhere discussing this. I saw pieces but not a narrative.

Hello,
I'm trying to update kernel of ubuntu 16.04.2, current version is 3.14.
Disks are setup as raid 0 with root partition on /dev/md2 and home on /dev/md3
When I boot with new kernel I get error
Code:
Gave up wating for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
-Check root= (did the system wait for right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! UUID=<root partition uuid> does not exist.
Dropping to a shell!
The UUID it is waiting for is correct for the root partition (I also use UUID in fstab).
If I run blkid in in that busybox after failing to boot it recongnizes /dev/md3 correctly (has correct UUID), but /dev/md2 (root partition) is not recongnized/shown at all.
The issue seems that raid's root partition doesn't get assembled ? I ran fsck on both partitions and they are fine, I still have old kernel in bootloader and it still works fine.

Hello,
I post this for a friend of me, how works with Lubuntu 14.04 LTS
It has a problem with the package tzdata and we tried this:
Code:

Es müssen noch 0 B von 100 MB an Archiven heruntergeladen werden.
Nach dieser Operation werden 295 MB Plattenplatz zusätzlich benutzt.

To solve it, we tried this:
1. sudo apt-get purge tzdata
2. sudo apt-get clean
3. sudo apt-get autoclean
4. sudo apt-get autoremove
5. sudo apt-get update
6. sudo apt-get install --reinstall lubuntu-desktop
7. sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh -a
And this is the command output:
Code:
sudo apt-get purge tzdata

It seems that about every 2nd image upgrade I get a boot full (pun intended) Anyway this is the process I use.
Code:
Command line method:
First check your kernel version, so you won't delete the in-use kernel image, running:
uname -r
Now run this command for a list of installed kernels:
sudo dpkg --list 'linux-image*'
and delete the kernels you don't want/need anymore by running this:
sudo apt-get remove linux-image-VERSION
Replace VERSION with the version of the kernel you want to remove.
When you're done removing the older kernels, you can run this to remove ever packages you won't need anymore:
sudo apt-get autoremove
And finally you can run this to update grub kernel list:
sudo update-grub
The results from this.
Code:
ron@Cronluath:~$ uname -r
4.4.0-62-generic
ron@Cronluath:~$ sudo dpkg --list 'linux-image*'

Hi,
I replaced a 320 GB laptop harddisk, didn't check for BIOS and just went on to install Lubuntu which went fine. After this, I reboot and the laptop asks for bootable medium. I check the BIOS which shows no harddisk. Back to Lubuntu installation, check for harddisk: shows /dev/sda 320 GB is installed with Lubuntu 14.04. Reboot again, same story: asks for bootable medium, BIOS shows no harddisk. Anyone a clue what's going on? Thanks.

Hello,
I know this issue is discussed in others threads but what I've read so far doesn't seem to help.
I just build a new PC and I am trying to install Ubuntu as the single OS on the system.
Some info on the system:
Motherboard: Gigabyte H170-HD3
CPU: i3 7100
Since I am now testing I will add more hardware here to avoid confusion. Right now, the above hardware + 32GB of RAM are installed on the system.
I have created an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS ISO on an 8GB USB stick and I am trying to boot from it and run it as a live USB. I used OpenSUSE Studio Writer to "burn" the ISO.
I have also created a Lubuntu 16.04 LTS ISO on a 4GB USB stick.
In the motherboard menu, I have selected:
Operating System: Other OS
FastBoot: Disabled
Storage Boot Option Control: Legacy
Other PCI Device ROM Priority: Legacy
The board sees the USB sticks and it gives a few two options:
[name of the USB stick]
[UEFI: name of the USB stick]
I tried to boot from the first option and the USB boots and it asks me to select language and then when I select Try... the PC reboots.
I tried to boot from the second option and a CLI menu appears, I select again the first option and again the PC reboots.
I tried adding a few parameters like nomodeset, although I use the integrated graphics or quiet splash... nothing changes.
I am lost. Any help would highly appreciated.
