Hi all,

Last update cycle installed kernel 3.13.0-93, now my boot fails at the purple screen with a message 'Serious issue with /' and giving me options to 'Ignore, Skip, Manual'. I can still boot 3.13.0-92. What's happening? any advice?

Thanx,

Xiguus.

Installing 32bit distro onto HD from a 64bit Live boot

I am trying to revive and old point of sale system with a touch screen that previously ran on windows XP. It's no longer supported anymore and it generally runs like crap. I've formatted the hard drive and I need to install the 32bit version of ubuntu. Every machine I have is 64 bit and no matter if I burned the 32-bit version to a USB drive or a disk I just can't get any machine to load it up. The point of sale system did boot ubuntu but the transfer speeds from what is most likely USB ver.1 makes it almost impossible to even load it up.

I had removed the hard drive and put it into an enclosure so I can access it with USB.

Is there any way I could live boot up a 64bit version of ubuntu but write a 32bit installation onto that drive?

At that point, I plan to just put the HD back into the point of sale system and let it boot up that way.

[all variants] Be careful if you use the new gParted for new partitions

Be careful if you use the new gParted for new partitions. It uses newer filesystem tools and can format some new features into the new partitions that your system probably isn't new enough to be able to handle.

Looking at: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=gparted

You can see that gParted uses e2fsprogs (1.43.1) , but a lot of distros aren't using those essential filesystem tools that new yet.
I learned this after getting some non fatal errors and from using an older version of gParted that complained about the new unsupported features.

It's also worth knowing that although gParted tends to be reliable, it's not actually based upon Debian Stable. It's based upon Debian "Sid", which is either UnStable or Testing, I forget which.
This might not be really bad in terms of bugs, but it's bad in terms of incompatibility.

Because of the issues I've seen with this, my fsck isn't new enough to fix my drive if it crashes even though it works fine on older filesystem implementation.
And it could be years until my distro updates it's repositories with versions of e2fsprogs as new as the ones gParted is using.

So be wary. And know that even if you format with ext3 instead of ext4, it's still using the newer version of e2fsprogs, so you might still have the same issue.

Installing over another version of Ubuntu

Hi friends,
I've currently got the Gnome desktop installed, but I would like to switch to KDE. I have my HD partitioned, there are some windows programs I still would like to use. When I try to install Kubuntu, it doesn't give an automatic option to install in a particular partition. I then went into the manual/custom option. There appears to be checkboxes to select a particular partition, they don't do anything. If I highlight the partition I want, and click okay, it gives me an error message - I should have written down what it said though.

So how can I erase, or otherwise install over the disk partition that currently houses Gnome Ubuntu?

Hello everybody,

I'm having a very strange behavior while trying to install Ubuntu, Kubuntu and ubuntu gnome. hope you can help me with the install

steps to reproduce:

  1. I'm using install-usb, created with Unetbootin, xboot or yumi (tried all those).
  2. On usb-spash i select either start ubuntu / kubuntu or anything
    • I have used vga=975, 895 and other options, but no one have worked.

  3. in boot process (before any gui is displayed) the monitor / tv starts giving "Invalid resolution" message (not from the pc).
  4. I can't enjoy livecd not install using it.

I've tried with other distros (suse) but got the same error.

I haven't tried installing from server edition (command line), i guess it should work.

my pc:

core i5 3570
16gb ram
1.25 tb (3 drives, and windws)
nvidia gtx 560,
samsung smart tv 40" 4k (Un40Ju6100Fxzx)
mb gigabyte z77.

Thanks in advance.

[ubuntu] System doesn't log in properly

Hi,

I'm quite new to Ubuntu and I have really weird problem. During system update (I use 16.04) and installation of some apps, by mistake I entered 'stop' in terminal. This caused disappearance of 'sidebar' and the upper one, I can compare it to killing 'explorer.exe' in Windows. Some apps disappeared (system update too), I couldn't switch between windows (Alt+Tab) or use any other schrouts (e.g. Ctrl+Alt+Delete). Then I rebooted computer. It ran properly, everything was OK. I updated system, it told me to reboot, so I did. System booted properly, but after logging in there weren't bars, Super key or schrouts didn't work (as before); I can say that on-screen keyboard worked. Hence I rebooted a few times, I upgraded system by
Code:

sudo apt update
and
Code:

sudo apt upgrade
then rebooted. The same occured. So I tried every option in recovery mode, but nothing helped. Can anyone help me?

Thank you :)

Hello. I recently upgraded 14.04 t0 16.04. I have been trying to put CHIRP back on to the laptop, so I can program one of my amateur radios.

Bottom line up front: I received a message saying that an error is not able to be reported.

I am going to post the output, and I hope that someone can teach me what went wrong. Thank you.

[all variants] After upgrading Ubuntu black screen?

$

After applying the latest upgrade instead of prompting for my password, Ubuntu is not sending any signal to my monitor. It gets so far as the 5/6 dots to show it is progressing through boot, but no further. What I have tried already is below:

When attempting to run in fail safe graphics mode (from 4.4.0-34-generic (recovery mode) and 4.2.0-42-generic (recovery mode)) I receive the following error:

Code:

The system is running in low-graphics mode

Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.

If I select the radio button for try running with default graphical mode the black cross cursor appears in the foreground but the background is just a black screen, and this does not change. If I select reconfigure graphics I receive a prompt to select either use default (generic) configuration or use your backed-up configuration. Selecting either and clicking on OK does nothing.

I am just trying fsck from the recovery options, which is working on /dev/mapper/enc-pv.

Graphics card is an MSI GTX 970, please tell me how I can resolve this?

EDIT:

I thought fsck was hanging on /dev/mapper/enc-pv as it is a large part of the drive but that may not be the case, as the screen has just gone dark again.

Also, as it may be relevant there was an error that appeared, during but separate to, the upgrade when I was last logged in:

Code:

The volume "filesystem root" has only 763.6 MB disk space remaining.

You can free up disk space by removing unused programs or files , or by moving files to another partition.

I selected the ignore button, as the upgrade was just removing old or unused packages which I thought may help on this, although thinking on it now I have a separate /boot partition...

[ubuntu] New disk unallocated space

I am relatively new to Ubuntu and PC building in general.

I just a built a Desktop PC and installed Ubuntu. Its been up and running fine so far. But I just realized that one of my internal disk drives is not being utilized.

I have one 250gb ssd drive, the OS is currently installed here
and a 2tb SATA internal harddrive, this drive is currently not being recognized (screenshots from gparted is attached)

Please advise on how to add the second harddrive
How to plan space allocation (i.e. what files/folders should reside on SSD versus internal harddrive)
I intend to install windows eventually on this PC too (maybe as dual boot or on VM)

Please advise

Thanks

Updated HP Windows 7 x64 to 10 & Want to Install Ubuntu 16.04.1 Dual Boot

HP laptop, updated from Windows 7 x64 to Windows 10 (standard BIOS) with two 500 GB hard drives & 8 GB RAM wanting to dual boot Ubuntu 16.04.1 but running into issues with the disk 0 / sda already having four partitions and quickly running out of knowledge!

I had previously deleted the HP Recovery partition on Disk 0 and shrunk C: volume so I had approximately 100 GB unallocated space for Ubuntu install but during Ubuntu install realized I still had the 3 partitions and so wasn't sure how to work around that with either drive.

So I extended the C: volume and removed the 100 GB unallocated space until I could figure out what and how to setup.

Here is where I'm at in Ubuntu install when have the option to install alongside Windows 10 or Something Else:

Install alongside Windows 10 looks like it will install on sdb / second hard (D:) drive which seems like it would be easy and I would be fine with that, only not sure if I will have any boot issues, or if this is even ideal, etc? Would it really be that simple?

https://i.imgur.com/N4VeFkU.jpg

When I select Something Else, these are the options I'm presented with, keeping in mind I removed the unallocated space I had previously made but removed due to already having 3 partitions on sda / disk 0 / C:

https://i.imgur.com/BlfGvZt.jpg

With this configuration, what is the best method to install and dual boot Ubuntu? sda & sdb, sdb only, should I setup partitions beforehand?

Assistance is greatly appreciated, thanks!

[ubuntu] Uninstalled Windows, deleted everything from live CD - Installed Ubuntu - I/O Errors

Hi all,

I hope this isn't a bore for you guys, but my Windows broke down while I had a dual boot with Kali and I just couldnt get it to work, sick of both systems I deleted them from a Ubuntu live cd - stupid I know. Now I cant get Ubuntu to work despite its supposedly being only system on my computer and Grub 2 working.

Basically it get stuck loading after the first install. When I try to repair it via a live ubuntu cd nothing works as I get errors when I run the command below:

Code:

sudo fsck /dev/sda1
fsck from util-linux 2.27.1

e2fsck 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
fsck.ext2: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/sda1
Could this be a zero-length partition?

Here's more sepcific info on my situation:

[SOLVED] some commands do not function any longer

Good morning fellow ubunters):P
I am the grumpy type, I know I am. I regret upgrading from 14.04 to 16.04. When I try updating _ because you are not always informed of updates_ and the updater does not function properly _ it happens that it abruptly aborts without any explanation_ I try updating using the terminal. But with 16.04 you cannot do it anymore.

christophe@hp1:~$ sudo su
[sudo] password for christophe:
root@hp1:/home/christophe# sudo aptitude update
sudo: aptitude: command not found
root@hp1:/home/christophe# sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
sudo: aptitude: command not found
root@hp1:/home/christophe# sudo aptitude full-upgrade

I have a dream that someday, someone will come up with an operating system you only need update every three months.

Have a nice Monday all of you. ;)

Hello, how can I installing Pidgin and Skype in Ubuntu 16.04.1? I have try many ways...

[ubuntu] Want to revert back to 14.04 from 16.04..................

After several attempts to install 16.04 from CD and whilst a "version" runs, I have no printer connect, unable to get my files, cannot load Adobe ad infinitum.

I run a 32 bit Packard Bell
Memory 2 GiB

Either how can I resolve or maybe ideally (?) can I rever t back to the safety of 14.04

Finally, a throw away comment. Is it perhaps time to dump my current machine and upgrade?
