[ubuntu] Ubuntu preseed file. RAID 1 not created

$

Hello!
I had a problem when installing ubuntu with preseed file.
The problem is as follows:
I need to create a RAID1 (mdadm, 2 drive) and install the OS, the Internet found a lot of examples in the forum authors confirm their correctness, but after I copy them to your file and run the installation, the installer does not comply with these instructions, and creates a partition on default just sda.

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS is installed as a virtual machine VmWare vSphere, VM settings have two hard drives (40GB).

Maybe I do not have somewhere to set in the file, you can send the preseed file is fully working configuration in which to create a RAID1. Please, help.

Hello I recently updated 16.04 when I finally restarted the laptop. It started in rescue mode with error /boot/grub/i386-pc/boot.mod not found. I have tried google but the closest thing it finds is normal.mod not found. I have tried BOOT= and PREFIX= but did not work. Can any one shed any light....????

[ubuntu] Failed to Install Bootloader: 12.04 UBUNTU Desktop 32-bit on SSD that came with Win10

I have a new desktop PC that came with Windows 10 64-bit version installed on it. I do not need the Windows OS but I am trying to Install Ubuntu Desktop version 12.04 32-bit version which I must have to support a specific software program for my company. The problem I am having is the installation "Fails to Install Boot Loader" no matter how I partition the drive. (so far) Ubuntu version 14.04 32-bit installs correctly and works fine. Unfortunately, the program we are running is NOT supported yet in the newer Ubuntu versions.

I tried many of the other troubleshooting blogs/steps and so far nothing has worked. I did run the Boot-Repair and here is the output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/22877456/

I suspect the issues has something to do with the Windows 10 installation being in UEFI boot and the 32-bit 12.04 UBUNTU does not support EFI boot.
I tried messing around with the UEFI mode versus Legacy boot mode, but when I switch it, then my SSD doesn't show up at all in the Ubuntu Installation Partitioning menu...
I've cleared all the partitions on the SSD and windows is gone, but is there another step I need to take in order to wipe the boot mode or MBR? from the SSD prior to installing UBUNTU?
By the way, I'm using USB 12.04 LIVE made with UNETBOOTIN for installation... Also, the 12.04 doesn't come with support for my Ethernet card so I have to install the new E1000E drivers first before the internet connection works... If someone has the steps I should take to make sure my SSD is wiped clean from the UEFI boot mode that came with the WINDOWS 10 install, reformat, repartition, and install UBUNTU 12.04 32 bit WITHOUT getting that "Failed to Install Bootloader" error, I would be VERY much grateful to that person!! Thank you.

Server won't shutdown after upgrade to 16.04

Updated my working 14.04 LTS server install to 16.04 with "sudo do-release-upgrade" It seemed to go smoothly. Noticed that restart was taking a long time. Since i'm running the machine headless, had to move it and hook up a monitor. This is what I happens when I try to restart.

Any ideas? I have an SSD as the HD and before the update it restarted in about ten seconds.

Upgrade to 1604 not soo smooth

Did an upgrade this am, during the install phase the computer froze, after 20 min, I shut off the computer
Restarted later - it did the startup routine and a terminal window reads
"Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Binabik tty1
Binabik Login:"

I can't get past the log in - can't figure what to put there my password does not work

Thanks

Looking for reliable guide for usb boot.

I'm searching for a guide to download ubuntu 16 64 bit .iso (direct download not torrent). Also, I need a reliable working .iso to bootable usb tool that will work for windows xp. I messed up and moved all of my boot files from my Ubuntu based laptop into a folder named temp boot. However, I have even looked into the option of rewriting my boot file's in order to reconize my file named temp boot instead of the original boot file in grub. (since I am stuck in grub at this point anyway.) I am willing to learn some code to fix this issue. However, I have no one to guide me the right direction and so far irc grub hasn't been helpful besides telling me to make a live disc. I tried to make a boot recovery usb for ubuntu. However, I tried over 6-7 different usb tool's that work on windows xp. Not a single one worked.

[all variants] gpt/bios grub2 boot problem, diagnostic and tools

sorry for the lengthy question

i have a 200 gb ssd formated as gpt with protective bios and grub2 (kubuntu 1404 did this back in 2014)

amd 8 core mobo with uefi bios

after a clonzilla from this ssd to a second ssd (same type) with cloning or copying boot and mbr by clonezilla resulted in will not boot

can't boot, but a friend helped me to fix a grub2 issue ... don't remember what he did, but it worked fine afterwards

now
did clonezilla again with same result ... no longer booting ... friend not avail, so i worked on it

i booted from rescatux / super-grub usb stick and did the following tests

gparted

sda1 500 mb ext2 (my /boot)
sda4 2 mb unknown
sda2 200 gb ext2 (my /root and home and usr/local)
sda3 11 gb unknown

initially i ran boot-info and it complained that on sda1 and sda2 the core.img file can't be found at xxxxxxx

boot from kubuntu live 1604 (not 1404)
i did a mount of sda2 /mnt and sda1 /mnt/boot and a bunch more mount --bind xxx as instructed
did a chroot
sudo grub-install /dev/sda and it succeeded
note : my kubuntu is 64 bit, but the grub-install did a i-386 flavour ???
ctrl-D to exit chroot
umount all prev mounts
and reboot

no success

boot from rescatux stick again

now boot-info shows no longer "can't find core.img at xxxxx" for partition sda1 /boot
sda2 /root still shows can't find core.img

zeroed 1st 512 bytes of sda2 assume mbr space with dd

now boot-info no longer looking for image on sda2 /root

tried either boot, esp or bios-rub flags on sda1 /boot and or 2nd unknown 2mb partition after sda1, but doesn't boot

boot from rescatux stick again

ran fsck on sda1 /boot and sda2 /root with result "clean"

used wxhexeditor to look at

ssd (globally) and it shows mbr image on 1st 512 bytes

ssd.part1 assuming sda1 /boot and shows data (possibly core.img) which contains "loading" and "Geom Read Error" as readable pieces within 1st 500 bytes

ssd.part2 assuming 2mb unknown partition containing 0s ... scary if this is supposed to be the core.img perhaps

ssd.part3 assuming sda2 /root all 0s was cleared with dd 512 bytes

ssd.part4 assuming 11 gb unknown format at end of ssd containing surprisingly same signature as ssd.part1 /boot ??? core.img

also boot-info showed
Boot sector type: Grub2's core.img on this unknow filesystem partition at the end of the ssd ... don't know how it got there ... maybe during the 1st grub repair a year ago by friend

i'll include at the end part of the boot-info

boot attempt symptoms :

bios splash -> f2 -> f8 to get boot menu and selecting ssd
upon enter pc seems to power down and fan spins down ... a few secs later boots up again and again and again

if i boot from rescatux or kubuntu life i can mount both partitions and have access to all files as it seems all well as a "clean" result from the unmounted partitions with fsck

i do not know of anything else to get more diagnostic info

i also don't know on how to check the gpt partition info and or mbr content for validity and proper linkage

there are also a few question

1) is it legal that the grub-install installs a i-386 grub2 in a 64 bit kubuntu os

1a) is there an issue with restoring grub2 from a 1604 disk on a 1404 install

2) the ssd shows the following partitions

sda seems to show a valid mbr as shown in wxhexeditor ... don't know another tool to look at sector content

sda1 500 mb ext2 (/boot) ... seems to have possibly core.img at 1st 512 bytes

sda4 2 mb unknown (following sda1, is this supposed to hold the core.img) ... shows 0s ... i didn't touch it

sda2 200 gb ext2 (/root and all else) ... 1st 512 bytes 0s as cleared my dd

sda3 11 gb unknown (remainder of ssd) seems to also containing core.img, maybe from the 1st grub boot fix a year ago

3) i assume that the mbr on sda 1st 512 bytes contains a valid mbr by looking at it ... don't know of tools to verify validity and linkage

i do not know on how to verify or get info on the linkage of the mbr for continuation

4) sda1 (1st partition) contains what looks like core.img in the 1st 512 bytes ... the reminder "clears" fsck

5) if sda4 2 mb unknown (2nd partition ... is 0s) is this supposed to hold core.img

6) sda2 200 gb ext2 (3rd partition with 1st 512 bytes 0 seems ok since fsck indicates "clear")

7) if the mbr at the 1st 512 bytes of the ssd is correct, where does it link to and how to verify or change it

8) is it correct that the 1st partition ext2 (boot) contains what seems to be core.img in the 1st 512 bytes

9) is the core.img supposed to be contained in the following 2mb partition currently holding 0s any tools to put the core.img onto it since it's 0s

10) is it correct that the 3rd partition ext2 with holding /root and all else has the 1st 512 bytes being 0s

it's very hard to find answers to any of the above loq level questions about the disk architecture, it's link addresses and tools to verivy and correct or change the settings

any help is highly appreciated, cheers EinHexenMeister

Upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04 fails (with video)

After running the command "do-release-upgrade", the upgrade process seemed to complete. I did notice some errors, such as this message that appeared multiple times:

GLIBCXX_3.4.21 not defined in file libstdc++.so.6 with link time reference

Anyways, after the installation process told me it was finished, and rebooted, all I get is a endless cycle of an error message appearing for a fraction of a second, and then what appears to be a flash in the screen then a reboot or something. I can't enter the grub menu by pressing shift while on the boot logo screen. I tried multiple times, the menu won't come up. What can do to fix this situation without wiping the drive clean?

[ubuntu] Some issues with a new install

I am planning to move back to Ubuntu (16.04) from OSX Mavericks on a Hackintosh (a HP 4540s). I have one disk running OSX and a separate disk for Ubuntu. My Users directory resides on a third disk, a usb disk, and has been configured to hfsplus non-journalled, and a test installation of Ubuntu loads the usb disk at startup though not as the /home directory. For the sake of those who may not know, Users in OSX is the equivalent of /home in Ubuntu.

I'm now ready to try a live installation of Ubuntu, and I'd appreciate any advice i can get.

  • I want to mount the Users directory (it is a partition on the usb disk) as /home. I don't know how easy it would be to make the usb disk dedicated to Users. (Haven't thought about it, but it would require a deal of juggling.)
  • My uid under OSX and presumably so registered under Users on the usb disk is 501. Under Ubuntu it will be 1000 by default. Same for gid.
  • I have, of course, backups of Users, though in Time Machine format. Haven't thought about how difficult it would be to back up Users in another format, say, as ordinary files.
  • I want to be able during the transfer phase to boot from either OSX or Ubuntu, since it will take some time to, for example, install and configure all program equivalents in Ubuntu. Just the thought of all my email accounts makes me blanch!

You MAY have seen a similar post somewhere else on the fora. I did post it once before, but did not make a note of the subject line, and now I can't find it. If you can point me to it, thanks! But I suspect that, for some reason, the post did not reach the fora.

Error with EFI, Dual Boot and reinstall

I was about to do a clean install for ubuntu (I have Windows 10 pre installed). So as usual (this worked before) I removed all partitions, and fused it back together with the main. Now I can´t even boot Win10 nor can I install the new one due to some incompatibility on the disk table mapping. Please find below my boot-repair message:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/22983898/

Im looking for not remove/reinstall my win10, recover its booting and also be able to install Ubuntu in a separate partition. I read its content but Im not that knowleadgeable on this topics, I understood from the report that I did something wrong at some point of the installation by mixing between GPT, MBR and EFI and the suggestion offered is to correct [repair-filesystems[ but Im not sure what this means or how its done.

Many thanks!

question on option to select for clean install 16.04.1

I have a dual installation Windows10 and Ubuntu14.04. Each os has its own 1TB hard disk. Gparted shows sda for the windows disk and sdb for the linux disk. The linux disk (sdb) currently uses LVM to partition and resize partitions. This has worked fine for a couple of years.

Now I want to install 16.04.1 onto sdb, retaining the dual boot option but I thought to abandon LVM. My plan was to make a 100GB partition for linux, keep a small swap partition, and just use the rest as Home.

When I boot 16.04.1 with a liveUSB stick and select 'install', after a few pages, I get to select an option with the message that the system has detected the windows installation :

option 1 : install UbuntuStudio alongside Windows Boot Manager
option 2 : erase disk and install UbuntuStudio (losing all files on both os)
option 3: something else.

I don't mind losing all the linux files - I have a full backup of all my data but I don't want the linux installation to touch the windows disk.

I selected option 3 'something else' and got a GParted like view of the sda1-4 (windows) and sdb1, the lvm allocated and free space.

When I select sdb1 (some 310 GiB's) and go for a change, I see the option to format the partition but I have to chose between /, /boot, etc and there doesn't appear to be a way to specify the sizes.

For fear of messing up - I abandoned the install before doing something irrevocable and would hope that someone can provide further info and advice.

Would option 1 or 2 be more appropriate, bearing in mind that Windows is on its own hard disk ?
Is it a problem to get rid of LVM ?

Unable to boot after migrating to SSD (dual-boot with windows)

Initially I had windows 10 + ubuntu 16.04 LTS on a 1TB hdd on my UEFI laptop. The disk was GPT (not MBR) and I was booting using grub.
I migrated my whole disk to a smaller (250GB) SSD, by resizing and moving all partitions to the beginning.
However, after connecting the new disk, I don't get the grub boot loader screen but I get a blue windows screen with the message:
Quote:

Recovery

Your PC/Device needs to be repaired

The application or operating system could not be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.

File: \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
Error code: 0xc0000225

You'll need to use recovery tools.

Press Enter to try again.
Press F8 for Startup settings.
I tried Boot-Repair, but it didn't do any good, here's the output: http://paste2.org/dhtIsJMV
How can I fix this?

[ubuntu] Installer crashes - low disk space

$

Hello! I am totally at a loss here. I am trying to install Ubuntu on a desktop (I would settle for literally any version at this point), and it never completes the process. Here is what happens:

  1. I create a bootable flash drive or dvd.
  2. I successfully boot from said object. The Ubuntu installer initially runs.
  3. It prompts me for installation type, and I select 'clear disk and install.'
  4. It prompts me for a bunch of other things: region, login, etc...
  5. It then gets to the screen where it claims it is installing Ubuntu, and shows a slideshow of all the great things Ubuntu can do if it actually runs
  6. It gets towards the end of installing, then crashes
  7. The computer says that there is no disc space remaining.
  8. If I am using the "try Ubuntu before installing" option, I then take this opportunity to go to the menu and tell it to shut down. I am then greeted by infinite scrolling text.

That is the gist of it, but I have tried many things now.
Sometimes, the installer does not even get that far. Most recently, it crashed on the "for best results, please ensure..." screen. However, it almost always cites low disc space in addition to the actual error popup, and the error popup usually states more information can be found in var/log/syslog. This file is absolutely MASSIVE, usually about 4GB. I assume that this file filling up causes the disk storage problem, which the Disk Usage Analyzer suggests. The / folder is 13.5 gb, and its usage is 100%.

This computer is an ASUS Realtek RTL8821AE. The monitor is an HP 22cwa. The computer has UEFI in addition to BIOS. Some things I have tried with the BIOS/UEFI options:
I tried enabling legacy mode for all boots (turning UEFI off) and that just got me to the infinite scrolling text immediately after showing the Ubuntu logo.
Fast boot is off.
When it first boots, and gives me the option to just install, or run Ubuntu, I have tried running the 'check disc for defects' option, and it said there were no problems.
Secure boot is disabled by removing the PK: http://www.technorms.com/45538/disab...i-bios-utility
I did go through this article, and am pretty sure I am following everything: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI
I did not run the boot repair because Ubuntu is not even installing

I have tried booting from:
USB stick - both 14 LTS and 16 LTS
DVD - 14 LTS

I have tried turning the wifi off (in the "try Ubuntu" version of the boot)
no dice on anything

I now basically have a bricked computer, because Ubuntu was kind enough to delete Windows before crashing. Irony is a bitch, and a beautiful one.
Let me know if there is anything else I can do.

[ubuntu] Flashing Ubuntu server onto and Android ARM64 device

Slightly off topic but :

Just wondering if anyone has tried flashing the ARM64 version of Ubuntu on to it?

Or what partitions would I need to flash to get it running?

It's working OK with Android, but it's limited to the APK's available!. I think it could be a nice little Linux server to take the load off my old linux box.
Their are tools out there to backup and flash the Rockchip CPU's but I can't get them to see my device for some reason.
So at the moment I'm stuck trying to manually pull the partition images form the device before i even attempt flashing it with another OS!

Any info or help will be welcomed ;)

Just wondering if an Ubuntu Touch install would be easier? Can that act like a generic server (without the telephone bits??)

Hi :-)

I upgraded my Ubuntu OS yesterday - I did not pay attention to it as it was a small upgrade (about 70 MB), so I don't know what has been upgraded. I'm very sorry about that.
After having installed the required modules, the system asked me to restart my computer. The result is a black screen with the message: "operating system not found"

I've found several answers to similar problems and tried to fix the problem with boot-repair. Unfortunately, it didn't work - here the report: http://paste.ubuntu.com/23018910/
I access my laptop via bootable USB.

My computer is a Lenovo X121e with Ubuntu 15.10 (only Linux).

I would be very happy if someone could help me. I'm pretty sad as I love this small laptop and scared about the unreliability of Ubuntu. I can't believe that I am the only one having this problem.

Thank you in advance! :-)

Replacing Windows with Ubuntu

Hello everyone I wanted to know what the process was to remove Windows 10, completely from a multi dual booting machine

This particular machine has Windows 10 and three other Linux installation systems on it. I would like to just remove Windows altogether because I don't use it at all and would like to make good use of that disk space

My concern is if I do remove Windows how would this effect my booting sequence? I currently have the option to choose which os using the Grub menu

I would like to keep things in order as they currently are

I would not want to delete anything and then have trouble booting my multi SO's

Thankstill for any help with this

[other] openssh_7 key based access to openssh_5 server

Hey;

I just upgraded my ubuntu laptop to ubuntu 16.04 which went very smoothly as all previous updates have. Openssh_7 turned off support for DSA keys so I'm off to create a new RSA key for myself. I generated the key pair and can use it to access accounts on my laptop w/o issue; however, I cannot access a Centos 6.8 system running openssh_5.3. The key isn't being accepted:

Code:

$ ssh -i ./id_rsa fw
Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic).

Permissions are set correctly as proven by the fact that I can access accounts locally w/o issue:

Code:

$ ssh localhost hostname
Enter passphrase for key '/home/dkoleary/.ssh/id_rsa':
oleary1

I suspect it's a difference in the key encryption as the key fingerprint on the openssh_7 system doens't look the same as it does on the openssh_5 box:

Code:

$ ssh-keygen -lf ./id_rsa
2048 SHA256:OWiBtrNCcrw3w4dHsT81R5UNpf6D618XzyGgK8OWXfc dkoleary@oleary1 (RSA)
$ exit
Connection to 192.168.12.146 closed.
$ head -1 /home/dkoleary/.ssh/authorized_keys | kf
b1:f3:e3:15:b2:87:10:42:d2:19:72:d8:41:8e:09:4e oleary1          dkoleary@oleary1

Those are the exact same keys...

Has anyone into this and know how to get around it? My google-foo is weak today as I haven't been able to find any mention of it.

Thanks for any help/hints/tips/suggestions.

Upgrade to 16.04 LTS from 14.04 LTS broke NIS

I searched the forums and was unable to come up with anything like what I've experienced today.

I have a set of servers and four desktops for a research lab, all running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS currently. I was beginning an upgrade to the OS and started with a pair of the desktops, which happily upgraded to 16.04 LTS... happily, except that upon rebooting, they became "unclustered". That is, they will not bind to the NIS server in the cluster, and therefore no user accounts are enabled. NFS is not broken - the /home/user area that's served by the NFS server in the cluster is still happy having its disk crossmounted on these two machines, but no users are known to the desktops now because of the broken NIS.

Is this a known problem? What might be suggested as a fix?

Thanks,

Todd
