multi touch gesture alternatives ?

$

Hi,
since a while i'm trying to get quite a good working kubuntu tablet.

with kwin tiling and some kde-plasma5 adjustement it's getting there now.
the most important part is still missing -> Multi touch gestures

until Now i tried:
Easystroke, xswipe, touchegg, Ginn

easystroke is not multitouch supporting, but a nice thing, but cant be used paralle to other gesture software.

xswipe is quite limited, does not support pinch and rotate.

Ginn is working but horrible to configure trouch the config file and the result is not worth the effort in my experience

Tochegg together with the compileable touchegg-gce is easy to configure, but the multitouch abilities are not very satisifying, pinche sometimes get interpreted as swipes of rotates and opposite way,.....tochegg is also not always sure about the amount of finger on the touchscreen and so not realy a reliable and daily use multitouch support.

Most of those projects endes devolpement in 2011 where the multitouch aera just started, so i cant believe that there was not anything else goin on since then, i might just not find it.

Does anyone know about some new or at least improved multi touch gesture developements ?

Thanks in advance
Gernot

[ubuntu] Upgrade to unsupported version

Can I upgrade to an unsupported version of ubuntu? I want to know it because I want to move from 14.04 - 14.10 - 15.04 and finally to 15.10.

Install Ub15.10 with separate /home ?

I want to install Ub 15.10 on a 2 TB HD with /home in its own partition.

During install, I choose "something else" and get into choosing partitions. I want the o/s in its own partition and /home in its own, and a swap partition. Can somebody walk me through this or refer me to a clear guide?

The stuff I google up looks different from the Ub 15.10 partion menu. The o/s goes in / right? And then you create a new partition located at /home, right? There's no clear menu guide on how to do this.

Thanks

Ubuntu installer fails to create swap partition ?

Hi,

I have installed 14.04 on my laptop following C.S.Cameron's instructions in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2060493. Specifically it includes instructions for creating 'swap space'

(Optional swap space, allows hybernation)
Click "free space" and then "Add".
Select "Primary", "New partition size ..." = remaining space, (1000 to 2000 megabytes, or same size as RAM), Beginning and "Use as" = "swap area" then OK.

The problem is that when the install is complete Ubuntu doesn't seem to recognize this swap space. The system monitor (ksysguard) lists swap as 0.0 GiB. I can see from Gparted that there is clearly some sort of partition (/dev/sda6) where I intended the swap space to be (see attached pic) but I don't understand why the system isn't recognizing it as swap space ? Does anyone understand why this is happening and is there any way I can use this 3.72GB partition as swap space now that the install is complete ?

Thanks,

Hello! When I upgrade my packages in the terminal, it tells me I have one package kept back - libgbm1. Is there a reason why this package has been kept back and a way to fix this? I am running Ubuntu 14.04.4. If you ask me to do something, please give some instructions as I don't know much about Ubuntu.

Code:

$ sudo apt-get upgrade

[ubuntu] Dual boot: windows 7 + ubuntu 14.04LTS: Unable to boot to Windows now

Hello ,
My machine is Lenevo ThinkPad T530- i7 8GBRAM- UEFI dual support BIOS.
Before installing ubuntu on separate partition, my disk status was:
/dev/sda1: C drive : Windows 7 BOOT NTFS 75GB Encrypted - Primary
/dev/sda5: D drive : NTFS 25GB Encrypted - Logical
/dev/sda6: F drive : NTFS 70GB - Logical
Free space 70GB
To install ubuntu, added 3 partitions from unallocated space:
/dev/sda7: /root : ext4 20GB
/dev/sda8: swap: 4GB
/dev/sda9: /home: ext4 45GB

So, I Installed ubuntu on /dev/sda7 on top of windows which was on /dev/sda1.
At time of installation, ubuntu was not able to detect Windows and I continued to install ubuntu on these 3 new partitions.
Now, I dont see any grub loader at startup and it directly boots into ubuntu.
I tried to enable dual boot for windows which resides on C drive (/dev/sda1) by fixing using Boot Repair from ubuntu Live CD. But even that didnt help to get me see grub boot loader at startup itself.
This is text of Boot Repair summary : http://paste.ubuntu.com/15160659/

below is some text from this summary: It says unable to mount /dev/sda1 Is it because its encrypted? PLEASE HELP!!

Your system could be in an unusable stateA recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Please Somebody help me how can I upgrade my ubuntu to 12.04.05?

[ubuntu] Upgrade from 14.04 LTS to 15.10

All,

Following the directions on step 2 on the Ubuntu site, http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/upgrade, I was unable to upgrade from 14.04 LTS to 15.10. Every post pointed to doing an incremental upgrade 14.04 to 14.10. 14.10 to 15.04. Too much. I kept getting the same message, System updated. Finally, I opened the terminal and then typed in "update-manager" the system then ran a search and then read system updated, do you want to upgrade? First time I ever seen this. I typed Y for yes. The upgrade started and then returned a core error. I typed in "update-manager" again in the terminal. Again, it ran a check, replied system updated, do you want to upgrade? Again I typed Y. Now my system is at 15.10 and running fine. This may work for you if you are stuck at 14.04. good luck

Installing Xubuntu on LVM/luks and keep the home directory...

Hi everyone,

this is my first post and I'd like to ask something about a change.

I'm currently using manjaro with xfce and want to switch to xubuntu. I installed there everything on lvm with luks encryption.

Is it possible to install Xubuntu and keep the home directory (and all the existing files there)? Is there any guide how to do it?

Thank in advance.

Firstly, sorry if its wrong sub-forum but apt-get is used to install things. Secondly, im using a linux based on ubuntu 14.04. Just based.

So, im trying to install python. I typed the needed commands. At ./configure , i got the error "no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH". I tried to install tcc, but the "make" command didnt work ("make" command not found"). Afted typing "sudo apt-get make" i got another error: "sudo-apt: command not found". Anyone knows what i can do? Or at least what wget command i could type?

TL;DR
Command apt-get not working on ubuntu 14.04 based linux but wget works. Need how to fix or what wget command i need.

[ubuntu] Boot installation with erased EFI partition

Dear all,
I correctly installed ubuntu 15.10 on a dell xps 9350 (everthing working except DA100 video converters) with legacy mode on and secure boot off.
Later I run boot-repair and the system was not able to boot in any way. So I formatted everything with gparted (erasing all the partitions) and tried to reinstall ubuntu 15.10 from usb but it was unable to install the boot loader.
I think that I erased the EFI partition when I used gparted so may be ubuntu is not able to reinstall correctly the boot loader?
I tried to install Opensuse Leap 42.1 and it installed without problem the boot loader.
There is any solution for this problem? How can I installa again the right boot loader in order to make working ubuntu 15.10?

[ubuntu] Why would you NOT bother to upgrade to 14.04 from 12.04?

$

I have been using 12.04 LTS for some time now. Is there any point upgrading to 14.04.4 LTS?

I ask because I've just learned that a program I want to install (Openshot) only has a PPA for 14.04. Using the tarball has installation errors and I would prefer to download this (and any other programs) via PPA if possible.

Are there any disadvantages to upgrading (other than the time taken to do so)?

Keyboar layout for Japanese Acer Laptop

Hi! I am trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS onto an Acer Laptop with Japanese keyboard. However, I am having trouble to setup the keyboard properly. I am not interested in typing in Japanese, but only in English with accented characters. I have tried every Japanese keyboard layout variant available, but all of them are different from the keyboard layout of my laptop. See below:

One of the biggest problems is that the "Shift" keys are not correctly handled.

Any clue on that?

Thanks in advance!

[xubuntu] Installation not found after updates, clean install. SSD Xubuntu.

I have an interesting problem with a xubuntu install.

I pulled a working xubuntu SSD from a dual boot windows 10 computer and installed it into another computer hoping to install a fresh xubuntu. I fixed my windows 10 install MBR and that computer works fine as a Windows only machine now.

On the other computer, the xubuntu installer was showing only 2MB of free space so I couldn't install. I used live cd with gparted and it reported 2MB free space also and the rest of the drive was not found. Had to install the SSD into a windows machine, which would see all the partitions, to delete partitions and then the xubuntu installer would see the drive just fine. That’s ok and after the installer completes, I can boot to my new installation just fine; everything works perfectly. After I install all updates from the software updater, reboot causes error where OS can’t be found. Live CD gparted shows the same 2MB free space again and the rest of the drive is not detected. I can’t even edit the partitions or anything. I have to remove the drive, install into windows machine and repeat. I’ve never had this problem before with any linux installs, not sure where to go from here.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance! FYI, I've attempted this with 32bit versions of Xubuntu 15.10 and Linux Mint 17.3 with the same results. The computer is a foxconn NT-A3500 which has worked fine for Linux installs in the past.

[lubuntu] Getting online with Lubuntu

Dear Experts

I should be grateful for your help with getting Lubuntu 15.4 (version 219) online. It is on live CD, and the computer is called

Hewlett Packard Pavilion desktop a.808.uk

This connects via an ethernet cable to a cable modem called

Motorola Surfboard 5100i

which in turn connects to a length of coax, as supplied by my broadband provider. The HP machine was bought about 8 years ago, as I remember. Windows 7 has replaced the pre-installed XP. Using boot options noapic/nolapic/nomodeset gets me as far as the purple desktop. But there is a whirligig churning away endlessly, on the taskbar where the network icon should be. Opening a terminal window to type

sudo service network-manager start

has no effect.

And typing

sudo service network-manager restart

yields the message

disconnected you are now offline.

Is all of this symptomatic of a missing driver? If I unplug the ethernet cable from the HP, and connect it to my new Windows 10 machine, I can get online without difficulty. Like right this minute for example. There isn't a problem with the network itself.
