Install UEFI version to disk using BIOS/MBR live boot?

$
0
0
I have a Lenovo M92p that suffers from the Lenovo Bios problem (will
only UEFI-boot Windows and RHEL OS's) even after a BIOS firmware update
from 10/2015. (See threads here for some details if interested
https://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/20187.html)

Here's what I need to do to make a workaround - but I can't:

1. Boot a USB drive with a Ubuntu or Mint live CD iso in BIOS/MBR mode
(because the Lenovo won't boot these as UEFI per above). I can easily
do this using legacy boot mode and selecting the USB drive as the boot
device.

2. Install Ubuntu or Mint *as a UEFI install* from the BIOS/MBR booted
live CD. I need to get the EFI bootloaders into the GPT format boot
partition and keep it as GPT. *I CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO THIS STEP*
using the live CD installer. Remember, I can't boot the live USB key
as UEFI.

If I can perform step 2, then I can reboot the live CD (as BIOS/MBR
again), and go in and edit the EFI boot manager labels in the
hard-disk EFI boot partition to "fool" the Lenovo BIOS into thinking
there is an RHEL image being booted from the hard disk. (Again, see thread above for
details.)

So, anybody know how to accomplish Step 2 above?

Thanks,

- Les

Black Screen with non-blinking cursor when booting

So today I was prompted to update, but it said to continue updates I should upgrade to 15.10. So I did. At first it worked, everything booted back up fine. I even ran updates again after that upgrade was complete. then I restarted for those updates and now when try to boot up I get to a screen that says "Ubuntu 15.10 ttyl" and then it sends me to a black screen with a non-blinking cursor. It just stays there. Ive tried a couple of things. I was able to hit SHIFT when booting and went to recovery console. Tried a few of those options but no luck. I also chose what I guess was a previous kernel and it worked - however, when updating again to see if I corrected I also removed that option by purging my unecessary updates I believe. That option is no longer available.

I have an iso disk I was going to try and reinstall on top of my currrent system, but I dont want to lose the files. Currently I haven't been successful in getting it to boot however. Is there something I can do/try to get this working or at least back into my system? Thanks!

Oh and at the screen that I spoke of I tried doing "CTRL+ALT+F4" but nothing happens...

Update: Also I can get to Root shell prompt from recovery mode... not sure if that helps anything.

[ubuntu] Failed to download repository information, Check your Internet Connection

[ubuntu noob] Recently, I've been getting an error "Failed to download repository information...Check your internet connection", and I am positive I have internet connection (i.e. this post). I don't think it's directly affecting anything adversely, but occasionally,I will get a red caution icon in the system tray - but no other symptoms other than the dialogue. I suppose I can go without updates for a while, but I would like my system to run properly so I'm interested in taking care of this.

I've read other posts and answering authors often request to see the output of the /etc/apt/sources.list file:

[ubuntu] Computer does not poweroff since upgrade from kernel 3.19.0.25

$

Hi,

I have been trying to resolve this for a while and have not been able to solve the issue.

The problem is simple, since the kernel was upgraded from 3.19.0.25 the computer will not shutdown properly. It starts the sequence then halts after 6-10sec -- it does not poweroff the computer, it seems to stop at a higher running state with the logoff screen still visible. To shutdown the computer I have to press the power button until the computer actually powers off. As a work around I have reverted back to kernel version 3.19.0.25 and at each new kernel upgrade tested again. Despite multiple upgrades this problem has not disappeared.

I have read many many blogs and posts on related issues but nothing that has been suggested works. It appears to me that it was about this time that the Upstart system was changed for the Systemd system, and this somehow has made ubuntu incompatible with my hardware. I have tried reinstalling Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (which I currently use with the Mate Desktop), changed various desktop environments and moved to the latest Ubuntu release or different 'flavours' -- essentially if the distro has the latest kernel my shutdown does not work.

I can't believe I am the only one with this problem, yet few seem to be reporting the issue.

Can anyone suggest how I can proceed?

Thanks Simon

Boot to login screen after update

Well, my desktop machine has been in storage for the better part of a year and half as I've been overseas. Got it running again Saturday, and updated from Studio 12.04 to 14.04. Today, it gave me notice that there were updates available again, so I let it run. Now it fails to start X, and takes me to a command line login screen. "startx" looks like it's trying, then knocks me back to the CL.
I seem to remember this happened before, but it's been so long since I've been able to run my Linux box that I can't recall what the fix was, and a quick search here led me to a thread that was similar, but didn't quite have my same issue. I've tried using the "nomodeset" command in GRUB, but to be honest, I'm not sure I'm applying it correctly; like I said, it's been a while.
Any and all help is appreciated, and thanks in advance.

[UbuntuGnome] No launcher or menubar after upgrade from 15.04 to 15.10

$

I upgraded Ubuntu from 15.04 to 15.10 using the Software Update applications using the Unity desktop manager. Everything occurred without any errors and I rebooted into 15.10. But my 15.10 desktop shows no Launcher along the left side of the window and no menubar on top of the window. The only things I can see are the desktop folders which I had created on my desktop for 15.04.

What has happened ? Are the Launcher and/or Menubar hidden for some reason in 15.10 ? If not, how do I determine why these are not showing ?

I can right-click on the desktop and open a console window from there. I can probably run any program from the console window if I know the name of the program. But no Launcher and no Menubar means I have essentially no user interface.

Any help to determine why the Ubuntu Unity GUI interface is not being displayed on the desktop would be appreciated. The Launcher and menubar, needless to say, were part of the 15.04 Ubuntu Unity UI. The fact that they have disappeared in 15.10 is pretty disconcerting and makes Ubuntu unusable for me. I do have a backup of 15.04 but the fact that I cannot move forward with 15.04 means that going back to that release by restoring my backup is a dead end for me as far as Ubuntu is concerned.

Can't access Windows 8.1 boot loader after dual booting with Ubuntu 14.04

$

Hi
I just installed Ubuntu 14.04 and now I can't boot into the Windows 8.1 OS that was originally on my computer. I have tried to run boot repair using:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y boot-repair && boot-repair

I then ran the recommended repair and I got a message saying:
"GPT detected. Please create a BIOS-Boot partition (>1MB, unformatted filesystem, bios_grub flag). This can be performed via tools such as Gparted. Then try again."

I then created a bootinfo summary which is located at : http://paste.ubuntu.com/15177759/

Can someone please give me some advice as to how I can regain access to the windows boot system so that whenever I start my computer I will have a choice about whether I want to boot into Windows 8.1 or Ubuntu? I would really appreciate any help.
Thanks

Can't apt-get through sudo but works fine through root

folks,

ran a release upgrade to go from 12.04 LTS to 14.04.3 LTS, went well enough and in the midst of trying to reinstall a few things.

i've a number of users in the sudoers group and they can access sudo su etc fine.

but when running sudo apt-get update it'll just hang

Quote:

ant@server:/home/ant$ sudo apt-get update
0% [Connecting to gb.archive.ubuntu.com (91.189.88.149)] [Connecting to securit
running the same command while logged in as root is fine.

i've a load of installation scripts that fetch packages under different users so would rather get it working rather than amend those if anyone has any ideas

Installed Ubuntu but can't boot to it.

I bought a new Windows computer and immediately backed up Windows, changed the partition sizes, installed Ubuntu from a stick onto the big partition, and failed to change the boot order. Now I can boot Ubuntu only off the stick and can't get to the other partition.

After fiddling with the BIOS F2 boot order to no avail (it starts with Windows boot manager no matter what I pick), I figured out how to enable the F12 boot menu to let me boot off the stick, then I tried Boot Repair.

This was the preliminary report:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/15176854/

After that, I ran boot-repair, but it told me there was an error because of Secure Boot:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/15176884

So I disabled that and tried again:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/15177060/

There's still an error, but I don't know enough to know what. The computer boots to the internal hard drive automatically, which is good, but then I'm looking at Windows Boot Manager again. I've already fiddled with the boot priority order in BIOS with no success, so I don't know what to do next. I also tried to run the Windows command line command recommended, but was told I lack privileges. My password won't let me run cmd as administator, so I don't know what to do here either.

I am not going to use a Windows laptop again, so right now this computer is almost useless to me. Any advice you have would be appreciated.

Live DVD Freezes at Login Screen

I'm attempting to install Cisco's VIRL, which runs a version of Lubuntu. The install procedure is to boot into the live DVD and then install the software. Once I got as as far as the desktop before everything froze, but every other time the install freezes at the login screen. I've tried using acpi=off, nomodeset, noapic, but the problem persists.

The system is a Dell R720 and the install is through an iDRAC. Mounting the ISO and using a DVD fail in the same place.

Specs:
2 x Intel Xeon E5-2640
8 x 8GB Memory modules
2 x 300GB SAS drives
6 x 600GB SAS drives
1 x PERC H710 RAID controler
1 x Intel I350 QP network card

After "succesful" install, laptop freezes during boot!

I am trying to install Ubuntu Studio Wily WereWolf, the live version works okay, and the laptop is a Toshiba Satellite P50-c

Initially, it repeatedly failed to create a working grub.

Then, there were multiple problems with incorrect partitions.

Now, after what it considers a succesful install, it runs through a series of checks before freezing:

Code:

fsk from util-linux 2.26.2
[ok] started light display
      starting wpa supplicant......

[ok] ------
[ok] ------

[ok] ------
[ok] ------
[ok] reached target network....
      started host name
[  ] starting light display

At this point it freezes, with the cursor blinking at the position of the two empty brackets.

Could somebody please explain what is I can fix it.

Thanks Irvine.

Hi,

I have created a kickstart file wherein in the post installation script contains unpacking of some .deb files. Though the post installation(saw it intermediately using CTRL+ALT+F2) succeeds, wanted to know while the post installation is going on the installer is seen stuck at 0% and once post installation happens, it brings up the message that installation is complete.
