[ubuntu] How to remove MS Windows 10 totally?

I have dualboot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 22.04, and now I try to remove Windows 10, deleting its installed partition and the partition with label Microsoft Reserved can make it loss all functions, but there are some files left in ESP partition, which files of them are used by Windows 10 only?

Crash / boot loop after upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04

Hi!
I'm running an ubuntu server with the following history:
Initially installed 18.04 LTS on it.
No fancy 3rd party drivers, it's just running subversion, nextcloud, some samba shares and FHEM.
Drive is partitioned 512MB VFAT for /boot/efi, 1GB EXT4 for /boot, 15GB EXT4 for /
Upgraded directly and successfully to 22.04.5 just a few days ago (via do-release-upgrade)
Now trying to upgrade to 24.04.1 via do-release-upgrade
The upgrade runs through but when it finally reboots it crashes into a complete unexpected RESET so early that my screen isn't able to show anything.

Things that I've checked already:
Both the desktop and the server live version boot flawlessly on this system.
A fresh server install of 24.04.1 boots flawlessly on this system.
So it can't be a general hardware incompatibility.

Next thing I checked:
On the upgraded installation which constantly crashes I reverted back to binary image backups of my /boot/efi and /boot partitions. This boots perfectly fine into the 24.04.1 root filesystem but of course with the old kernel that came with 22.04.5.
When I then do a simple update-grub, the next boot immediately crashes as before.

There are no fancy grub config options, i.e. I've never edited /etc/default/grub
/etc/grub.d/ contains these:
Code:

drwxr-xr-x  2 root root  4096 Sep 10 09:23 .
drwxr-xr-x 121 root root 12288 Sep 20 23:07 ..

Do you have any hints what I can do to debug this crash and finally find a solution?

Thanks,

[ubuntu] ubuntu boot-repair-disk fails

I was installing LinuxMint (Xfce22) but the installation failed with a message about GRUB failing to install. I now only have the basic Grub> prompt.

I have down loaded the ubuntu boot-repair-disk and have pointed the BIOS to that USB - however that also fails right at the beginning with message about serious failures 'shim SBAT violation' - security policy violation (or words to that effect - it flashes up rather briefly).

There is nothing on the laptop disc that matters - I want to simply start again. Can someone help me get past the first hurdle please?

upbooting to ubuntu 24.04.9 problem

I have noticed that there is, often, a problem with the mouse freezing. I have also noticed that, every morning, I get an update. This morning I got and installed a new one and, now, on that machine, the mouse is no longer freezing. There used to be solutions to this on the net but they are all old and do not seem to cover a freezing mouse when upgrading.

I have one more machine i am going to have to upgrade. I think, however, that I will wait a couple more months give my problems so far.

Just thought I would mention this one.........

I'm a Mac person who has never owned a PC, but I'm familiar with unix-like systems as a developer. I have built a PC because I want to use NVIDIA cards.

My new system will only boot Ubuntu if I do a long-press reset and then select the Ubuntu installation via Boot Override in BIOS.

The system does not have any other OS installed, I do not have a copy of windows.

Here's the Boot Repair output: https://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/VRg5Zm5dsy/

I appreciate any tips to get this system booting.

Repositories not listing Bacula for download.

There is an issue that is confusing to me. On my Linux mint it lists all that are version 13.0.4-1 build 3. This is a good thing. On a different Linux mint it only lists bacula-doc 9.6.7.1. And to add to my confusion,my Ubuntu 22.04.5 has the same issue as the one Linix Mint.because it only lists the bacula.doc. It sounds like a repository issue to me but after 12 straight hours of searching, testing, looking for related issues on the internet, I have found nothing of help. I could most likely build a bacula setup. I really would rather not because I have read how complicated the build is for bacula. If anyone has any clear thoughts on 1) What is actually happening 2) Why it is happening 3) What I can do to correct it. I would be in debt to the one who can answer those questions.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 24.04 Upgrade Issue - Cannot upgrade system with unmerged /usr

I'm trying to upgrade to 24.04 from 22.04 but get the error of - Cannot upgrade system with unmerged /usr

I've installed usrmerge via the terminal
Code:

~$ sudo apt-get install usrmerge
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
usrmerge is already the newest version (25ubuntu2).
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 5 not upgraded.

I am not prompted at any point to continue or anything. I've tried to re-run usrmerge via terminal
Code:

~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure usrmerge
This produces no output at all.

I don't know that it matters but I have a duel boot system (Windows and Ubuntu) but that has never prevented an upgrade in the past.

I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. I've been on Linux for many years but I'm still somewhat of a noob so any assistance is greatly appreciated.

[ubuntu] Errors during upgrade from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS to 24.04.1 LTS

I got an error concerning Thunderbird update. Later there was a message that the upgrade was stopped and finally a message that the upgrade was finished completely but that there have been errors. I try to add the printscreens of the messages, but I am not sure that it works - so I add the messages here, too (sorry, but they are in German):
Message 1:

Message 3:
Systemaktualisierung wurde abgeschlossen
Die Systemaktualisierung wurde vollständig abgeschlossen, jedoch traten während der Systemaktualisierung Fehler auf.

What I did afterwards:
I rebooted the system. Afterwards I used the following commands:
sudo apt-get check => it found thunderbird-locale-de

sudo apt --fix-broken install

sudo apt autoremove => to delete the packages not longer needed

It seemes that the thunderbird (snap) installation went OK - even if Thunderbird after boot today wanted me to configure a first email account, starting again Thunderbird everything seems to be OK.

Then:

sudo apt autoremove => there was a warning:

Warning: The unit file, source configuration file or drop-ins of systemd-binfmt.
service changed on disk. Run 'systemctl daemon-reload' to reload units.

so I did:
systemctl daemon-reload

During the actions some folder are not deleted because they haven't been empty - I have to have a special look...:

dpkg: Warnung: Altes Verzeichnis »/etc/thunderbird« kann nicht gelöscht werden:
Das Verzeichnis ist nicht leer

Big question: Is there something left to do to finish the upgrade?

[ubuntu] Upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04.1 interrupted before it ends

Hello,
My sister in law laptop had a power failure before the end of the upgrade.
Upon restart, the laptop advertise itself in Noble.
But :
1) there is still a Thunderbird deb binary in /usr/bin/thunderbird (and this is what is set to run when you select the Thunderbird icon, with data in .thunderbird and there is a Thunderbird snap installed....
2) apt autoremove found a huge amount of packets to remove.
I bet there are other problems but I did not find them yet.
What would be the best course of action to complete the release upgrade ?
All help will be appreciated !
Thank you for your answers.

I have Plex media server running on an hp laptop running Ubuntu server. Today I logged in using putty and discovered there was a version upgrade.

The command which I do not recall had do-something-something. Long story short is that I had to leave and when I returned the putty session had terminated and I could not reconnect.

On the laptop itself I had a white screen indicating that something went wrong (white screen of death?) and the machine will not boot.

Is there a way I could recover?
Thanks

This was a headless server upgrading from 22.04 to 24.04 and everything worked fine until the reboot. It never came back so I reattached the head and saw it's not booting. I see a brief menu but I don't know if it's grub or bios before it goes black and restarts into bios. Its gigabyte UEFI dual bios and everything looks fine there. Ubuntu is still the first boot option.

I found a similar post about this but I could not follow it because he also had a wifi stick he was talking about and I am not command line savy. I bought this laptop yesterday and installed Ubuntu Mate. I can't get the wifi to work. I think the controller is WIFI6E 802.11ax. I'm considering trying to see if I can put Windows back on it and returning it. Any help is appreciated.

Cannot upgrade system with unmerged /usr

Hello,

I have a MSI Z790 motherboard and a TX401 network card. Under windows no issue. Underl inux no NIC and wifi is 20MB.

I've found out that new versions could fix that so I wanted to go from 22.04.5 LTS to a newer version through the do release upgrade.

but:
Code:

Cannot upgrade system with unmerged /usr

Please install the usrmerge package to fix this, and then try the
upgrade again.

and when reinstalling usermerge:
Code:

Preparing to unpack .../usrmerge_25ubuntu2_all.deb ...
Unpacking usrmerge (25ubuntu2) over (25ubuntu2) ...
Setting up usrmerge (25ubuntu2) ...
Smartmatch is experimental at /usr/lib/usrmerge/convert-usrmerge line 172.

FATAL ERROR:
Both /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libselinux.so.1 and /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libselinux.so.1 exist.

You can try correcting the errors reported and running again
/usr/lib/usrmerge/convert-usrmerge until it will complete without errors.
Do not install or update other Debian packages until the program
has been run successfully.

/usr/lib/ is a symlink to /lib/

Spent the whole day trying to assess how ot do that, but I found no way on forums so far, and I am stuck with poor connectivity... help !

Grub problem following upgrade from 22.04 to 24.04 on a very old laptop

Hello all
I've an old laptop (Intel Core2 with 4Gib memory, BIOS only, Sata disc but IDE CDROM Writer... ).
Before upgrading, I had the grub menu displayed on the screen (and I can't remember if I needed something special for this).
After upgrading (which did not finish properly because Thunderbird had an installation problem) the grub menu is not displayed anymore but I can select the default entry by pressing "enter" on the blanl screen.
I wonder what I should do to get my grub menu back ?
All help would be appreciated.
Have a nice and bright day !

[ubuntu] Mangled dual boot after re-installing Ubuntu

$
0
0
I decided to perform a fresh install of Ubuntu to upgrade from an older version. I had Ubuntu and Windows 11 working perfectly (note: I originally installed Windows 10 and upgraded to 11) prior to this exercise

I took a photo of the output of df -h and re-installed ubuntu in advanced mode keeping the filesystem partitions the same, however when I rebooted I no longer saw the Windows option in Grub. One thing I noticed and perhaps this caused the error was that Ubuntu detected /dev/nvme1n1p2 as /boot/efi/ during install but I changed this to /dev/nvme0n1p1 to match the prior output from df.

I since ran boot-repair from a live Ubuntu the output of which is below. However this has not solved my issue and I still no-longer see Windows as an option.

Code:

boot-repair-4ppa2081                                              [20240929_1949]

Hi everyone,
I recently installed Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on my laptop, which previously had no operating system. The installation process went smoothly, but when I try to boot up after installation, I’m met with a blank white screen. I decide to do a fresh ubuntu install, but i get the same blank white screen. Anyone have faced this issue before and any ideas on how to fix this?

[lubuntu] upgrade to 24.04.01 lts from 22 stuck at black screen login

sorry i am not going to be good at describing whats happening but here goes. i did google a lot but due to disability i can read on forever to find solutions. scanning pages confirmed none of them matched anyway. my desktop computer is stuck at 'xxxxxxx-system-product-name login:'
when i shutdown via the power button it shows the purple screen with ubuntu 24.04.01.
i tried booting using ctrl-alt-f1 then f2 then on and on to f8 but nothing happened. i am unsure of the timing. should i have my fingers on those keys prior to pressing power button? then from there i was unsure but nothing happening so no good. i have seen i should log into grub but been years since i have done that and when i google that info it doesnt match this version of ubuntu and makes no difference or the info is incomplete. especially since due to disability i am still probably a beginner. bear with me as i have to keep pulling out a laptop in a small space and dont often have the energy to proceed for a couple of days

[ubuntu] version parameter isn't provided during update

dear all,

I have a preinstalled package of our software on Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS.
The installed version is a 8.0.0-1440, when I try to install a new version 8.0.0-1489 with the following command "sudo apt install mypackage_8.0.0-1489-amd64.deb"
the preinst script is launch, 2 parameters are correctly provided:
$1 -> upgrade
$2 -> 8.0.0-1440

but when the postinst script is executed, only
$1 -> configure

si provided and I don't have $2 parameter where I expected to get the new version for example 8.0.0-1489

anybody know why the version is not correctly provided ? (same thing with sudo apt upgrade)

And if I use " dpkg-deb -I mypackage_8.0.0-1489-amd64.deb" the version is correctly set to 8.0.0-1489

Does anybody have an idea of the problem why the version isn't provided in the postinst script plz ?

bellow the screen

Thank a lot
Adrien
