[ubuntu] 22.04 to 24.04 upgrade completed with errors. Unusable state warning.

I kicked off my do-release-upgrade over ssh this morning and things are looking grim. It was working ok at first except during the upgrade it kept printing

Code:

X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.
which sometimes forced useful information off the screen. Hopefully that's unrelated.

When the upgrade wrapped I saw this, before it got pushed off the screen by those X11 errors:

Code:

Upgrade complete

The upgrade has completed but there were errors during the upgrade
process.

I'm hoping there's a way to pull this out of the fire, ideally remotely, but I'm not sure where to start. I can still ssh to the system but I don't dare to reboot until I have a better idea what's going on. I'm happy to get rid of hdf5 and mpi but even if those are the cause of the issue, which isn't clear to me, I'm not sure how to restart the upgrade and turn this into a clean 24.04 install.

My /var/log/dist-upgrade/screenlog.0 is too big to upload, but here are the probably relevant excerpts, starting with the first obvious error.

[ubuntu] Impossible upgrade 23.04 -> 23.10 -> 24.04

I have a laptop with Ubuntu 23.04 that I haven't used for a while. Now I would like to upgrade it to 24.04. When reading the forum, I understand that in order to upgrade to 24.04 I first have to upgrade to 23.10. However:
1) I cannot get update-manager to show 23.10 as an alternative (has it already expired in September 2024?)
2) update-manager incorrectly shows 24.04 as an option for upgrade, but when I agree to perform the upgrade I get an error message:
------
Can not upgrade

An upgrade from 'lunar' to 'noble' is not supported with this tool.
------

I tried:
0) upgrading all packages to the latest available for 23.04
1) changing the "Notify me of a new Ubuntu version" to any of the alternative options,
2) downloading the Mantic (23.10) files manually (following an old forum post)
to no avail.

Am I stuck with 23.04? Any chances of being able to eventually upgrade to 24.04?
When checking for duplicate posts, please check the date, because most of forum posts on the topic are from a time when 23.10 was not officially released yet, but now we are in September 2024.

Thank you!

[ubuntu] help with nonbooting drive

have a single 160gb ssd in my system. unfortunately for me, that drive is no longer booting. on attempted normal boot the pc simply says no bootable devices found. but, if i run from the live CD(usb stick), i can see the ssd drive is there and all the data appears to be on it; again, just can't boot from it any longer.

installed the boot repair app and sent to pastebin; which bring me to all of you via this post! can anyone please review and let me know what commands need run to repair the drive so that it boots again? thank you!!!!

below is my capture from: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/vzcvtNGvz9/

Have an issue upgrading my Ubuntu 23.04 to 24.04.1. From what I'm seeing, Ubuntu Pro is a requirement for upgrading to 24.04.1 but I haven't seen that called out anywhere.

Is it required or am I missing something?

see output below

Thanks

P.S. Tried Software Updater and it exits with no message.

[ubuntu_budgie] [HELP] Ubuntu Budgie Disk Setup No Options

$

I'm attempting to install Ubuntu Budgie from the live usb iso but every single time I do the Disk Setup page shows no options for "How do you want to install Ubuntu Budgie?" as shown here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1_Dz...ew?usp=sharing.
The weirdest thing is that I've loaded the exact iso into a virtual machine and the option appeared with no problem.

So far I've tried:

  • Putting noacpi in the grub boot loader options
  • Changing USBS
  • Using rufus to format it in both MBR and GPT
  • Using Balena Etcher
  • Running CHKDSK on all drives to fix any issues there
  • Updating the BIOS
  • Disabling Compatibility Mode, Secure Boot, and setting SATA to ACPI in BIOS
  • Disabling Fastboot in Windows

My System is:

  • 500gb Crucial SATA SSD
  • 500gb Crucial M.2 NVME SSD
  • 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD
  • Ryzen 5 4500
  • Asus Prime B450M-A II
  • GeForce RTX 3060
  • 16GB T-Force RAM

There seems to be a ton of crash logs as well so I'll attach those as well to see if they'll be any help. Thank you very much if you can help I'm kind of losing my mind over this.

[ubuntu] Not able to login to Sony Vaio SVE141 after fresh install on SSD

$

Hi

I had an old Sony Vaio SVE141 E series laptop with Windows 7. It was able to upgrade it to windows 10 which mean that the motherboard supports Win10.

I couldn't find anything related to UEFI in its BIOS so I assume it is a classic MBR BIOS. I changed the harddisk to a brand new Crucial BX500 SSD. I dont prefer to tinker with the old harddisk.

I was able to boot from a USB drive burned with Rufus (in MBR mode) containing Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and install the OS. The process seems to have run successfully.

On attempting boot from the harddisk the system refused with "No OS Found". I am not sure what went wrong. I am adding some command ops in the hope that it helps

While attempting to debug from the live USB install. These are the outputs

fdisk. Note that sda is the SSD. USB shows up as ssdb
Code:

fdisk -l
Device      Start      End  Sectors      Size Type
/dev/sda1    2048      4095      2048    1M BIOS boot
/dev/sda2    4096  1054719  1050624  513M EFI System
/dev/sda3  1054720 468860927 467806208 223.1G Linux filesystem

efibootmgr
Code:

$ sudo efibootmgr -v
EFI variables are not supported on this system.

Install grub succeeds. I am unable to update grub. Somehow grub seem to be not available in the required path.
Code:

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo update-grub
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: failed to get canonical path of `/cow'.

Will be thankful for any help.

A possibility which I was doubting was that the laptop has a buggy bootloader which starts only with windows however my USB booted without any issues so that is unlikely unless the machine allows booting from external devices from any OS but only Windows when it comes to internal harddisk. Is that something seen with VAIO. I understand then reFIND could help but I wanted some expert inputs before putting in more time. Possibly my issue is something more local.

Thanks
PK

[ubuntu] Unstable wifi after Upgrade to 24.04.1

Greetings Ubuntufolas,

Just upgraded to 24.04.1 from the previous release and now my wifi connection keeps cutting out. Everything else seems great.

I've tried this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1524...525026#1525026

And this: https://gist.github.com/UbuntuEvange...24e592eb925b68

There has been some improvement but no fix. The wifi disconnects by the hour now rather than the minute.

I'm on a Dell Precision 7510 with a maxed out RAM of 32GB, and my wifi speed is blazing fast. I should not be having this problem, but there it is.

All suggestions will be welcome, but please don't tell me to "try" a clean install.

[ubuntu] Cannot boot into Linux after creating dual boot

I created a dual boot from Ubuntu following this guideline: https://itsfoss.com/install-windows-...ntu-dual-boot/
Everything worked well but I cannot boot into Ubuntu anymore. It doesnt show in the BIOS. I know the Ubuntu partition still exists with all the booting files. I went into live Ubuntu and tried boot repair. These are my pastebins from before and after the recommended repair:

https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/mvmP4XBy92/
https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/p6BXNTvCSp/

After running the recommend repair, the feedback screen said: Locked NVram detected

I'm using a Lenovo ThinkPad. Please if necessary tell me what information you need to get help.

installing 24.04 with usb stick - problem...........

I have now installed 24.04, with usb stick, two times and finishing up with the 3rd time. My problem seems to be pretty simple. I install, mess around a bit, etc. (I never seem to get the thing that tells me to restart which is, I think, my problem.) I will pay particular attention once its done installing the system.

I am starting with this because somebody might know what I am doing wrong...........

[ubuntu] Frozen during upgrade via GUI; will not boot

$

I will preface this saying I'm not new to Ubuntu (using since '15 on the same HP laptop), but I am also not fluent with Ubuntu. I use it as an alternative to the expense of Windows. I'm also not even 50% sure of what version I was currently using when attempting to upgrade (pastebin shows 22.04), and I can only assume that upgrade was to 24.04....I was prompted ~ 09/10/24 to update. I know that's extremely vague, but I'm hoping that along with the pastebin that will provide enough information for suggestion from more experienced users.

Approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of the way through the upgrade, the installation froze. I was unable to launch any applications, however the GUI was still "functional". I waited 24 hours, but the installation remained at the same point. This is where I should've sought advice, but I forced a shutdown/reboot via power button. CL showed multiple daemon service failures for Power Profiles and Thermal. The last messages were:
[FAILED] Failed to start Power Profiles daemon
[ OK ] Stopped Thermal Daemon Service
[FAILED] Failed to start Thermal Daemon Service
[ OK ] Finished GRUB failed boot detection
[ OK ] Finished resolvconf-pull-resolved.service
[ OK ] Finished Secure Boot updates for DB and DBX

After some research here, I acquired another laptop to create a Boot-Repair-Disk and here I am. The suggestion on the documentation was to share the pastebin with the boot issue description for advice here before proceeding with "Recommended Repair". I yield to the community for suggestions. I would obviously like to repair and retain the data on my HD, either completing this installation or reverting to the old version. Thank you.

?24.04 slower than 22.04

Thinkpad 430s is my preferred hardware, runs Lubuntu 22.04 well.

I've now upgraded 3-4 of them with Lubuntu 24.04, and they all have the same problem, which is that they run slower, and at higher temps, than 22.04, and also needs frequent rebooting. This persists with 24.04.1.

I see that this is well reported with servers using 24.04 vs 22.04, but have not seen laptop issues mentioned.

Not a big problem, 22.04 is LTS, good til 2027, but I wonder if eventually I'll have to find a new my beloved T430s's behind: they're tanks, and I've found the newer hardware not nearly as reliable.

Anyone else noticing this, and any ideas?

[ubuntu] Upgrade issues

I clicked on the dialogue to upgrade software and it successfully did this. It then asked me to restart Ubuntu, which I did. However I now have the contents/folders of my Home folder displayed on my desktop. I don't want this. How do I get rid of it? Has anyone else had this problem?

What version of Ubuntu is possible on Dell XPS-13 9360?

I've just been to the Canonical site listing the Dell machines that Ubuntu supports. The Dell XPS-13's listed skip from the 9340 to the 9360. Does this mean I won't be able to run Ubuntu on it?

This is a machine I bought a few years ago and that has been running ("running"; it's a very rickety install that won't update) Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. It's a broken install, and I'm desperate to get off it and onto a more current version that supports, e.g., current websites &c.

What are my options? What is the most recent version of Ubuntu (if any) that will run on my XPS-13? Do I need to replace my hardware?

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 24.10 beta won't install on Virtualbox 7.1

Ubuntu 24.04
Virtualbox 7.1

The Ubuntu 24.10 beta won't install on a Virtualbox 7.1 VM. The installer just freezes. It'll freeze at different points if I deselect the full installation, or if I deselect the addition of various media/wifi optional installs.

It freezes during the "copying files" portion, but I don't see the VB status icons indicate that any VM disk activity is occurring.

Has anybody gotten the beta to work in a VM?

Lenovo OEM install vs regular Ubuntu install

Hello,

My Lenovo ThinkPad T16 Gen 3 came preinstalled with Ubuntu using an OEM image. This is based on the 6.5.0-1023-oem kernel that was used for certification. See https://ubuntu.com/certified/202405-34011.

At what point is it safe to just use the regular Ubuntu install (.iso) for 22.04 LTS? I see 22.04.5 was just released. Does that have all of the changes that were in the OEM version? (hardware support patches, etc.)

My understanding is the regular install is supposed to detect any hardware that was certified and choose the appropriate kernel. Is there a way for me to check, before committing to the installation, whether this detection occured?

Is there also a way to check whether these changes have been merged through release notes, commit logs, etc? I wouldn't know where to look or exactly what strings to search for.

[ubuntu] Update Question

Hello, New Here but not to Ubuntu :)
It seems that 22.04 is plagued with upgrade issues if you happen to have an nvidia gpu...

I just got an OEM system that came with Ubuntu 22.04 (HP Z2 Mini G9 with RTXA2000) off the box works beautifully to an extend lol, there seem to be a bit of lag on the GUI that is a bit annoying so naturally I proceed to do the updates...When the system reboots my nvidia rendering crashes and the system defaults to using llvmpipe.
It seems that this is an occurrence under 22.04?
Is there a fix. I see people posting to use noveou only?

The system came preinstalled with:
bookworm/sid
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 535.154.05 Thu Dec 28 15:37:48 UTC 2023
GCC version: gcc version 12.3.0 (Ubuntu 12.3.0-1ubuntu1~22.04)

I am running:

Operating System: Ubuntu 22.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.7
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.92.0
Qt Version: 5.15.3
Kernel Version: 6.5.0-1013-oem (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11
Processors: 32 × 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i9-13900K
Memory: 62.5 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA RTX A2000 12GB/PCIe/SSE2

Yes I installed KDE :P

[kubuntu] Upgrade question re:partitions

I'm currently running Kubuntu 22.04. I keep my /home directory on a separate partition. I normally do a fresh installation when a new LTS comes out. This time, however, I've decided to try the upgrade path, instead. Can I assume that the upgrade process won't alter my partition structure? I'm assuming it won't but I thought I'd ask the question just to be safe. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Dual boot lost after 24.04 upgrade

Acer laptop dual booted with Win 10 and (default) Ubuntu 22.04.
I ran the 24.04 upgrade (via Synaptic package manager) and it ran perfectly.
During the process it detected the Win 10 installation.
When I restarted the machine, boot up went straight into Ubuntu 24.04 - no Windows choice.
Anyone know how I can fix this without a whole lot of re-installation ?
Many thanks.
