Change to please gnome-shell-extension-weather load with Focal & up

Sadly neither Debian nor Ubuntu archives have recent version; and that useful applet fails to load.

What to do for solving the issue ? :
- goto https://gitlab.com/jenslody/gnome-sh...c/extension.js
- and click on the "copy file content" icon (first one on the right side)

- open a terminal, and edit /usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/openweather-extension@jenslody.de/extension.js
- select and erase the code, then paste by right clicking, and save then exit gedit

That it, now do "Alt+F2+r" to reload gnome-shell: you might see the weather icon ontop bar

No Windows boot possible after setting up Ubuntu

Hey guys,
I'm a complete newbie to Ubuntu and installed it on a computer with already Win7 and Win10 on it for University purposes.
The computer has three hard drives and was set up like this:

-120GB mSATA SSD with Win7
------100MB System-reserved NTFS
------119.9GB NTFS
-500GB HDD NTFS
-223GB SATA SSD with Win10 NTFS

during the setup of Ubuntu 18.04 I resized the Win10 Partition to 195GB to make space for this third OS in three Partitions as recommended.
Now Ubuntu is running fine, but GRUB only shows the options for Ubuntu and Win10. If i choose Win10 i get a plain purple screen and can't go further, so effectively I don't have access to both Win OS. I think the mistake was to resize the Win10-partition with Ubuntu and not a Windows-Tool.
I already tried Boot-Repair as recommended here but it didn't bring me further.
Has someone any thoughts on how to proceed? This is the report from the boot-repair tool.

Thanks!

edit: As seen in the report, the HDD without an OS doesn't seem to be registered at all in BIOS, but I wouldn't know how or if this affects the initial problem.

[server] Netinstall - bad default tty (black screen after boot installed system)

Hi, I found a problem in the new ubuntu 20.04 LTS installer via netinstall.

When installing and selecting only the SSH server, the distribution installs correctly, but after booting from the disk the default terminal is tty7 (thus only the black screen is shown).
Switching the ALT + F1 terminal to tty1 solves the problem and shows a normal login prompt.

When installing from a normal ISO image I did not encounter this problem.

It is a bit disturbing because it is not known what happens during startup and whether the server turned on correctly.

The difference I found is in the setting
/etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT

netinstall has:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "splash quiet"

system with normal iso:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "maybe-ubiquity"

After changing and rebuilding the grub config next boot normally loads login prompts.

[ubuntu] PC boots straight into windows (dual install)

Hi all,

Firstly, thanks to anyone reading this. Here is my story: I've got a laptop that needed some love so I erased all drives and freshly installed both Win10 and Ubuntu 20.04. The laptop has 1 ssd drive and 1 hdd, so I've installed both operating systems on the ssd and all the file directories on the larger hdd, I did this by manually installing ubuntu and specifying the /home partition on the larger hdd. Both operating systems work correctly. My issue is that whenever I start the PC, I don't see grub and the PC launches Win10 automatically.

If I use my bios option to be able to select boot device, I can then select Ubuntu to load, it is then that I see grub menu with both the options for ubuntu and windows 10. Since I have installed Ubuntu manually it is likely that something isn't quite the way it should be.

Any help on the matter is greatly appreciated, I've ried boot-repair with no success.

Thanks,

Injen

Ubuntu 20.04 halts at Boot Splash Screen

$

I have exactly the same problem: used Ubuntu successfully for years, now a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 I get stuck on the splash screen if I ever log out.
However, I can't try the various solutions suggested because, as I said, I'm stuck on the splash screen (I'm posting this from another machine).
Do I really have to re-install (i've already done that twice) just so I can enter the commands to disable splash screen?
Like the OP, i'm using an elderly Lenovo Thinkpad, which ran Ubuntu 19.10 and all the earlier versions since 12.10 with no problem.

Add RAID driver during install problem

Hello guys!

Im installing Ubuntu Server 16.04 x64 on Huawei Server with Megaraid SAS Raid adapter.
Boot mode - UEFI.

First of all - created Raid 5 Virtual disc (3 SAS discs).

During install, Ubuntu dont see the raid disc(it has megaraid_sas driver but its outdated).
After visiting manifacturing site I found the needed driver and its supports Ubuntu 16.
And what a joke - they have a driver in .deb format:-(
According to they manual we have to install it with dpkg
Code:

#dpkg -i <DRIVER_PACKAGE>.deb
.
For sure it wont works before system not installed yet.

What I did:
I installed DEB on virtual os and extracted megaraid_sas.ko needed driver file.
During Ubuntu install I switched terminal window (ALT+F2) and activated that module:
Code:

insmod megaraid_sas.ko
After that Ubuntu detected raid and successfully finished installation.
But, after reboot the system failed to start with the mdadm issues, partitons wasnt mounted and system dropped me into initramfs shell.

Im really tired with that ](*,)](*,)](*,)
Great thanks with any advices!

p.s. I tryed
Code:

update-initramfs -u
but it doesnt works during install.
p.p.s. I have some mind regards run commands via chroot into /target, but dont know exactly what to do yet.

This error has been reported here:

Bug report from Oldfred here:

My question is, from the bug report above, post #34 states using an older 2.04 grubx64.efi file.

The link he provided all fail. I found this link of the files, but don't know which deb to download and extract the grubx64.efi file:

Has anyone got the hack referred to by post#34 above to work?

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 18.04 Error reading The CPU Table when using apt or apt-get.

$

Hello everyone,

I am new to Ubuntu and I recently installed Ubuntu 18.04 on a Hostinger VPS account. I can't remember exactly what I was doing that caused this but I was able to use apt commands like(apt-get, sudo apt-get and apt) but now I cannot use them at all and there are 2 errors that they throw:

1)E: Error Reading the Cpu Table
2) -hash: apt-get: command not found

So the backstory is that last week I initially set up a VPS with Hostinger and I ran into the same issue. It stated throwing the same errors as I listed above when using the same commands after I had installed everything and was able to execute apt commands. Like I said up above, I can't remember what I was doing (I'm a server newb) but I was making some changes and then all of the sudden I could not use any apt commands to make installations. I was frustrated so I canceled the VPS server concluding that I was not fit to set up a server yet. After thinking about it I wanted another go and I thought starting fresh with a new IP and VPS that the apt commands would no longer be an issue but straight out of the box I tired to run apt update and apt-get update but it threw out the exact errors. I'm not sure why this would happen again?

Judging from other forum posts on here and sources on google I checked out, I think it may have to do with the file structure of the folders in my server or I need to reinstall some specific packages? I just don't know where to locate them in the server. All the solutions say that I need to use sudo apt-get update or apt get but those are not working since it's not letting me use those commands as a root user in my VPS ssh terminal. I definitely need help with this and I've tried for several days to find a solution and it's the 2nd VPS server in 2 weeks that I have tried to get to work. Can anyone offer me some solutions or suggestions? Here is some screen shots below of the errors thrown while trying to run apt commands.

Ubuntu won't load even after boot repair

$

Please help me resolve the bootloader issue that I have been having for the past few days. I am new to Ubuntu and have tried to install ubuntu on my laptop (specs below).

I am trying to dual boot both Windows 10 and Ubuntu with Windows 10 as my primary OS.

Laptop Specs: Dell Inspiron 15 Gaming Laptop
GPU: Nvidea 1050ti
CPT: i7-7Gen
Storage: 256 SSD + 1TB HDD
Ubuntu: 20.04 LTS

During my initial install, I had to use quick “quick splash acpi-off” as I was having install issues at the beginning. I used that and successfully installed ubuntu into my laptop.

However, at the end of the install I encountered the error message “grub-install /dev/sda failed” and used boot repair.

After boot repair(recommended mode and secure boot off), it showed that there was an error with the error links https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/X9V2Wt6t9X/

Currently, GRUB shows that there is Ubuntu but when I enter Ubuntu, it just freezes.

2 pictures below are the boot loader notification and my grub screen (with the live USB removed)

Ubuntu tells me to change my boot options to run Ubuntu as primary but I don't want that. I need my Windows to run as primary OS. Can I toggle secure boot back on after Ubuntu is installed?

Thanks to all who can help me

[xubuntu] Icon and theme set look weird(ish) in live session

Hi,
I am a Xubuntu user since version 14.04. Great distro, never gives me troubles. But now when trying to do a clean install for 20.04 I encountered a problem in the live session. The panel looks off (whitish instead of the usual darker tint of the Greybird theme) and the icons are also not the usual elementary set. I could also not correct this in the live session. The strange thing is: this only happens when booting of a live usb on my Lenovo Thinkpad L440. On my Thinkpad T430 everything is displayed as it should.

I did not proceed with the install. Should I be worried? Maybe everything will be normal again after installation or might there be a problem here? I included screenshots below.

managing partitions to put 20.04 on Intel Compute Stick?

$

I am trying to put Lubuntu 20.04 on an Intel Compute Stick STCK1A8LFC (1.33 GHz Atom Z3735F, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage), and I have 3 questions as described below...

I think this installation should work because Lubuntu 19.04 was successfully installed on the same device, as described here:
https://forums.intel.com/s/question/...language=en_US
Following that plan, I have attached a powered USB hub to the Compute Stick and attached my keyboard/mouse, USB with 20.04 iso image, and USB with 20GB free storage space.

I have already booted from the USB and am running Lubuntu 20.04 on the Compute Stick now. I started the 20.04 installer, but only made it to the section about partitions. The 20.04 installer is not giving me the option to erase the entire disk, only the manual partition option. As shown below (see photo), the Compute Stick has 4 partitions: FAT16 space, FAT32 space, Ubuntu 14.04 OS, and swap space. I stopped at the next step, asking me if I want to create a new partition table (see photo) because I don't know what will happen if I click OK.

My three questions:

(1) If I click OK at the stage shown in the image above, will it create a new partition table and erase the disk immediately, or will I still have the option to cancel installation without having erased the disk?

(2) Is it okay to erase and/or size-reduce the FAT16, FAT32, and swap partitions so there is (hopefully) enough space to install the Lubuntu 20.04 OS? (I kind of understand what FAT16&32 are, but I don't know if it is important for these partitions to be on the Compute Stick for it to work properly... if I reduce them to negligible size, can I just a USB or SD for storage in the future?)

(3) If I am going to go ahead and click OK at the stage above, which kind of partition table should I create (see photo)?

Thank you very much.

Machine: DELL XPS 13 9300 UEFI powered

I have followed the instructions in Ubuntu Discourse to change to AHCI controller faithfully, checking every step before action. However, windows fails to boot.

I have followed the recovery instructions to the point where I need to find the partition containing the files needed to start (boot) windows.

Diskpart shows the following partitions:

0 C OS NTFS 190GB
1 D Unused NTFS 137GB
2 E WINRETOOLS NTFS 990MB
3 Image NTFS 14GB
4 DELLSUPPORT NTFS 1563MB
5 ESP FAT32 180MB

The instructions tell me to switch to the partition conataining the needed files by selecting the partition letter. It is suggested the partition will be formatted as FAT32.

The partition ESP is formatted FAT32 (ESP) but how do I switch there as it does not have a letter?

[mythbuntu] Mythbuntu 18.04.4 to Xubuntu 20.04LTS possible without fresh install?

$

Hi,

I've been running a mythbuntu machine for the best part of 10 years now. I don't use the MythTV stuff any more but it runs a bit of a quasi home server. Over the years I've set up and configured a LOT of stuff, a lot of it I probably don't even remember. I'd like to keep this machine reasonably up to date but really don't want to do a fresh install and reconfigure everything. Is there a way to migrate the system to something light like say xubuntu and upgrade it to 20.04 without a new install?

Thanks for your help.

[ubuntu] ZFS first install, stuck on boot

Hello,

I am not new on Linux, but a total newbie concerning ZFS.

I tried to install Ubuntu 20.04 on an entire drive with NFS, but even if the installation seems to proceed without any problem, at the first boot, I am stuck at the Ubuntu logo spinning.

When looking at the process, the only failure is:
Code:

[FAILED] Failed to start Load AppArmor profiles.
See 'systemctl status apparmor.service' for details.

I followed the default installation, only choosing another language (French), and for the keyboard (French/French).
I tried the first time with normal installation and updates checked. Second time minimal installation and updates unchecked. Same problem.
I tried in ext4, same options, no problem.

It is on a 128 GB SSD in a PC connected via SATA. On a not modern computer with no exotic hardware.

Here are the partitions:
Code:

Is there some prerequisites?

Thanks for your help.
