[SOLVED] Blocked by the current security policy

Hi,

After a regular update of my 18.04 installation on a Lenovo Yoga 720 I was suddenly greeted at boot with an error saying Ubuntu has been blocked by the current security policy. I've used ours to trouble shoot, including using boot-repair both in automatic and advanced mode with different settings, plus attempted to do it manually and attempted to install rEFInd without succcess. I desperately need help to restore my system and hope someone may be able to help based on the boot-repair output to pastebin:

Thanks,

Please help. I downloaded Saucy Salamander onto windows 7 with ease at an ubuntu website several years ago. The Ubuntu computer program did everything and asked me lots of questions along the way? Now nothing seems to work to download 18.04 onto windows 8.1 with a partition. torrents do not work. booting from a thumb drive does not work. Where is the idiot proof website? "ubuntu-18.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso" I downloaded that file onto a thumb drive as instructed and then restarted the computer. Nothing. I hit F12. Nothing. What do I do?

[SOLVED] upgrade to 18.04 stucked at "rebuilding /usr/share/applications/bamf-2.index..."

It turns out that this step just cost too much time to finish.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone!

I'm new to Ubuntu, today, I saw an upgrade notification and just clicked it.

But now the upgrading is stucked at "Rebuilding /usr/share/applications/bamf-2.index..." and the upgrade window ("Upgrading Ubuntu to version 18.04") turned gray and I haven't seen any close or exit button.

Can anyone help me with this problem please?

Thanks!

Hi All,

I've tried to upgrade my old 16.4 System to 18.4 using do-release-upgrade, which crashed after about 30 minutes (download finished) just after asking afew questions about the kerbus Server. Sorry I don't have the exact error message.

If I rerun do-release-upgrade I get the following error:-

Upgrade to 18.04 produces odd hybrid Beaver screen

Recently I got a message on my laptop inviting upgrade to 18.04. I did it, it worked smoothly, and I liked the Gnome screen. I decided to upgrade my desk machine (Intel NUC box running 16.04). However, when I restarted, I saw the Unity screen, with the outline of the Beaver on it! However under Settings it says I am running 18.04.1, Software Updater says my software is up-to-date. Also everything seems to be running as it should, though I'm not sure how to tell.

I would like to understand what happened. More important, I would like to get the Gnome desktop running on this machine. All advice would be welcome.

Upgrade 16.04 to 18.04 blinking cursor with Nvidia

Hi all:
I have had a problem during upgrade last day, the upgrade says succesfull but when reboot i find a problem, it runs well untill the proccess GDM, where it becomes blinking and ctrl+alt+f5 is freeze for about 2 minutes. triyin to solve this, i couldn´t login in tty anymore! :(
here is the proccess i have done succesfully, maybe would help someone:

Initialice grub, reboot and when the scrren logo is out, press Shift key (right)

Go to terminal, first:
Mount file system with:
$mount -o remount,rw /

Activate ethernet:
$ifconfig -a
$sudo ifconfig eth1 up
in my case etp0s15 was the name of ethernet adapter
$sudo dhclient eth1

Introduce DNS
$sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf
type the next line in the editor:
nameserver 8.8.8.8
ctrl+o save, ctrl+x exit
$sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

$ping www.google.com
ctrl+c for stop
if ping is ok now we can download the drivers in my case, i have Nvidia:
install these libraries with apt-get install:
libglvnd0, xserver-xorg-core, and libgl1-mesa-glx

My old driver 100% functional on 16.04 was v340, but it doesn`t work on 18.04, v390 is ok.
$purge nvidia
install with $apt-get install nvidia-390

Reboot.

Now tty is ok and desktop is there!
Yuju!
Loging in see a big resolution, 640x480 as well, and no options to change it.
Changin resolution of display is as easy as:
open tty:
$sudo nano /etc/default/grub

Uncomment this line and change the value you want to:
GRUB_GFXMODE="800x600"
and update grub:
$sudo update-grub

Reboot.
hope to be usefull
kind regards

However I ran ubuntu 18.04 and my sound works just fine.... so why would it work on ubuntu but not windows...

Hi,
I used etcher to flash a version of Ubuntu 16.04 on my Micro SD card, but when I put it in my RaspberryPI and connect the HDMI cable to my Television I got "Not supported"

in the config file I tried this:
enable_uart=1
kernel=uboot.bin
device_tree_address=0x02008000
dtparam=i2c_arm=on
dtparam=spi=on
hdmi_safe=1

Than I have something like a color-picker on my screen, but nothing more.. What am I doing wrong?

[ubuntu] Cannot run USB installer for Ubuntu 18.04 on HP Elitebook 1050 G1

$

Hello everyone

I can't get the Ubuntu 18.04 installer (AMD 64 desktop image) to run on my new HP Elitebook 1050 G1. I want to set up a dual boot (Windows 10 / Ubuntu).

I presume it's something to do with the BIOS / UEFI settings for secure boot, which are mentioned in so many other threads.

The initial problem was that I couldn't even boot from the USB stick so I changed the following 2 BIOS / UEFI settings:

1) Advanced -> Boot Options -> Fast Boot: OFF (was ON by default)
Advanced_Boot_Options.jpg

2) Advanced → Secure Boot Configuration → Configure Legacy Support and Secure Boot: Legacy Support Disable and Secure Boot Disable (was "Legacy Support Disable and Secure Boot Enable" by default):
Secure_Boot_Configuration.jpg

Now it starts booting from the USB installer but then just stops with a blinking cursor at the bottom of the screen:
Ubuntu_live_installation_fail.jpg

I haven't changed BIOS Sure Start yet because I don't know what to do, but it might be a possibility:
BIOS_Sure_Start.jpg

Any ideas how I can get this installation running? Thanks!

Boot delayed on Ubuntu 18

Dear Sirs:

I tell you my problem, I hope you can help me:

I recently upgraded to ubuntu 18.04.1 and the startup is very slow.

I have a ssd disk and with ubuntu 16 I started very fast.

I have made the following checks:

- I have looked in / etc / fstab and there is no badly configured partition.

- dmesg -l err: does not throw any error

- systemd-analyze blame:

1.823s NetworkManager-wait-online.service

The process that takes more time is this, does not slow down the system.

systemd-analyze:

Startup finished in 19,827s (kernel) + 6,274s (userspace) = 26.101s

I have made the startup information visible and the problem does not seem to be that the start is late, the problem is that it takes time to start loading the kernel.

The screen stays black for a few seconds (more than 10 seconds) and then the system load begins.

The same problem occurs with kernels 4.15.0-29 and 4.15.0-33.

Any ideas?

Ubuntu 18.04 Install freezes

Hello,
I have been having trouble installing Ubuntu on my recent custom built PC. I begin the install and it goes through
as normal but once it gets to the Ubuntu loading splash screen it stops. Although the orbs continue to flash it doesn't
load. Trust me I have left it on overnight. Here are my system specs:
CPU: Ryzen 3 2200g with Raedon Vega 11 Graphics, 3.50ghz
RAM: 8gb DDR4
GPU: Nvidia GEFORCE GTX 1050 w/ 2gb vram
MOTHERBOARD: ASUS Prime B35M-A

I have already tried nomodeset and acpi=off and gotten the same results. Any Ideas?
Thanks?

[ubuntu] Clean upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 on Beelink AP34

$

I have a Beelink AP34 fanless PC currently running a dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04LTS. I used it to experiment with some docker applications and when I tried to upgrade one of those it forced me to purge docker entirely. This done it rebooted properly and I reinstalled the docker + postreSQL and mayan-EDMS from scratch. Though the installation went fine, it does not run and I suspect that is because there are bits and pieces of docker everywhere.

I believe that the best way forward would be to do a clean installation but this is a huge challenge as installing it in the first place requires jumping through all kinds of hoops like described in https://gist.github.com/pjobson/e0b0...1a2f33503c27c7 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwDE_eFchhY .

I wonder if, assuming that I can get it to boot from the standard USB stick, I could just install it over the existing 16.04 and allow it to update grub as it goes forward. It already has a ubuntu entry in the boot menu that seems to be persistent.

Is there anyone who has some previous experience with this ?

Thank you in advance

Martin

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 18.04 install fail (likely due to ACPI) -> install 17.10 and upgrade to 18.04?

$

Hello everyone

With a new HP Elitebook 1050 G1 on which I want to dual-boot Ubuntu alongside Windows 10, I have trouble with the 18.04 installer, likely due to ACPI issues - see thread Cannot run USB installer for Ubuntu 18.04 on HP Elitebook 1050 G1.

Is it wise to attempt a workaround by installing 17.10 (which apparently works) and then upgrade to 18.04? Or would the upgrade to 18.04 likely run into the same ACPI issues?

Thanks!

This is a very low end laptop with a AMD A6 processor.

I've seen reports of other users installing Ubuntu on this machine but for me it doesn't work.
Even running a live image from a USB drive fails.

A few minutes after boot up the machine always hard locks up and the only recovery is to power off.
I have no idea how to even debug this.

Other Linux distributions work fine. I've tested Fedora and Manjaro, both install and work perfectly.

[ubuntu] Can't upgrade from 16.10, laptop won't shut down, CAPS lock blinking, not booting

$

Hey guys,

My laptop (HP ProBook 4540S, originally with SUSE 11) is driving me nuts. I installed Ubuntu a few years ago and always got the updates. Since 16.10 I can't upgrade anymore and it shows an error "not all updates can be installed". But even a partial upgrade won't work.

Plus, when I shut down the laptop turns itself off after shutting down and after a few seconds turns itself on again. I can only click the power button to turn it off at that moment to keep it turned off.

Sometimes, when I start the laptop, it just doesn't start properly: the CAPS lock key blinks and the ventilation is going like crazy. Then I can't use the power button but I have to remove the battery to turn it off.

Does anyone know what to do? I'm guessing this is a bigger issue and I would love to bring my device somewhere to have it checked. Is there something like that in the area of Zurich, Switzerland?

Cheers and I highly appreciate all feedback!

Simon
Ah, and another thing: at one point my laptop inverted the scrolling direction of my mouse pad. Can I revert that?

Hello,
So, I have no experience in Linux, and this is a first-time computer build for me, using the main board and chip in the title and an SSD hard drive that is also new. I was going to run Ubuntu (its free, and I'm kind of curious about it). I made a bootable USB using a mac (formatted USB to FAT, using Etch to create the USB, image is ubuntu-18.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso . When I power on, I can get to the BIOS, but when I boot from the USB I get the following screens and errors (sorry for rotation on first). Any idea what's happening here and how to fix it?

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 16.04 and I'm experiencing difficulties.

I have multiple SSD's and I have Windows 10 installed on one. I would like to install Ubuntuon another SSD. I have created a bootable USB-stick using Ubuntu installation ISO. When I start the computer and enter UEFI BIOS, the usb-stick is seen there but when I try to BOOT it, the screen simply flashes and returns to UEFI settings screen. I'm pretty sure I've installed Windows in UEFI mode and I tried disable quick boot. I have not tried to disable secure boot, as it seems a bit more complicated matter. What could be wrong?

Windows 10, Ubuntu, CPU and everything else are 64-bit.

win10 (gpt partition table ) ubuntu 16.04 install partitions

good day
i'm getting ready to duel boot win10 with um 16.04 on an hp 15 p390nr
i have ran try ubuntu and it runs good .

i have never worked with gpt partition table before.
see attachment :
i have some questions about partitioning and gpt partition table
i'm planning on shrinking sda3 with win10, creating an unused space
then
i would like to back up the gpt partition table with the live session and save it maybe zip it.
so in the future i can restore the original gpt partition table, if i find i have to reinstall win10.

in the unused space i need two partitions, one for ubuntu and a 16gb linus-swap.

old school with an mbr you could create an extended partition and install partitions with in that,
how can i create two more partitions with my unused space i created ?

would it be better to create those partitions with win 10 ?

and use gparted to format them ?
