Upgrade to 18.04, problems with nvidia, blender

Hi,
After upgrading from version 17.something to 18.04, I had the following issues.

I could not log in to X11 as gdm kept crashing. I have an ASUS N53SV laptop, with dual nvidia/intel optimus graphics. I tried installing lightdm, but that refused to authenticate.
Finally I removed bumblebee and all nvidia packages, and it allows login. I am unsure what causes the conflict. I am not planning to use the nvidia graphics for a while, so I am moving on. But I thought I would report the problem.

The other problem I am having is a concern, as I wish to use blender. (I can always compile it from source though, but something I would rather avoid) The binary has two failed library dependencies:
Code:

$ ldd /usr/bin/blender | grep found
    libvpx.so.3 => not found
    libva-drm.so.1 => not found

The file libvpx.so.5 is installed, but not version 3. I have not looked at the libva-drm.so.1 issue.

Some details about my system may be relevant. It is a 64 bit system.
Code:

$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=18.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=bionic
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS"
$ uname -a
Linux Jupiter 4.15.0-33-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Wed Aug 15 16:00:05 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Although the install certainly did not run smoothly, eventually I got it to a state where apt/dpkg thinks all is ok.

[ubuntu] snap, SSL interception, 18.04 upgrade failure

I thought I'd try the upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 today. Unfortunately I didn't get very far. I'm getting the following warning/error:

Your system does not have a connection to the Snap Store...
Do you still want to continue with the upgrade?

Continue [yN]

After some Google searching I've come to suspect that this has to do with the fact that my workstation sits behind our corporate firewall which includes SSL interception. I did a "snap install hello-world" and received

error: cannot install "hello-world": Post https://api.snapcraft.io/v2/snaps/refresh: x509:
certificate signed by unknown authority

This would seem to validate my suspicion. Is there any way to get around this issue?

TIA

ManualFullSystemEncryption Questions

I used this guide, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ma...stemEncryption, to install/encrypt my system. What is the purpose of a separate data partition password, that does not have to be used on an everyday basis? Is this password known by the system (or able to be decrypted), and used behind the scenes to decrypt the data every day?Since the page is a Wiki, and the install file is linked from a dropbox account, why couldn't anyone change the link to malicious code? Would it just be noticed too quickly?

Hardware not working during ubuntu 18.04 install

Hello everybody,
I'm trying to install ubuntu 18.04 on a new hp pavilion. I've downloaded the right iso, used rufus to create a usb bootable stick with the right partition type (IGP) and disabled secure boot. Whenever i try to run ubuntu or to install ubuntu, i get the language screen but i can't click with my mouse. I can only move the cursos, and the keyboard is not working, everything remains stuck there. I also tried with an usb keyboard and a usb mouse, nothing changes. What type of error it might be? I also tried with legacy mode, with secure boot enabled/disabled but nothing works. It is an ubuntu problem or is my laptop? Because i could try with a different distribution, like arch o similar, but i prefer to remain with ubuntu.
Thank you for the help

[lubuntu] Upgrade issue (Or just incompetence)

HI there - i have just managed to get Lubuntu installed on an iMac G5 - epic adventure!!!

I am running version 16 point something. When i start up it tells me i can upgrade to the new version and the process starts both then gives me this error (see below in quotes) that I don’t understand. Can anyone tell me what i need to do and if indeed it is possible to upgrade the G5?

Thanks - and sorry if it is a stupid question... i have tried to find out myself i promise....

"After updating your package information, the essential package 'ubuntu-minimal' could not be located. This may be because you have no official mirrors listed in your software sources, or because of excessive load on the mirror you are using. See /etc/apt/sources.list for the current list of configured software sources.
In the case of an overloaded mirror, you may want to try the upgrade again later."

Hello,

I have installed lubuntu latest version and the language selected for the Desktop is EN_GB. However, the Digital Clock panel item is in the wrong language. How I can report this bug to the lubuntu team?. Is there a workaround to change the language of the Digital Clock panel item?

Thanks,

[ubuntu] No normal boot after upgrading from 16.04 to 18.04

I have a Dell Dimension 1100 (32b) that had 16.04 running perfectly. Given that I also have other 32b machines that I was able to successfully do the same upgrade I decided to do the same on this one. However after the process was completed with the success message I cannot boot it normally, after a fairly long time I catch a message line that the volume sda is clean and it would go on recovery mode and within that I cannot execute any of the options listed in that menu such as Network, FailsafeX, etc. So these are the steps that I did:

  1. With a Boot Repair CD I re-installed grub just in case,
  2. With a live CD I mounted /dev, /proc, /sys and /run to did a chroot and:

a. dpkg --configure -a (it returned immediately without any action shown)
b. apt update && apt upgrade (it installed some updates, apparently successfully)

I'm attaching some log files of the last boot attempt, I retrieved these with the live CD.
Many thanks in advance.

Trouble Installting Ubuntu 18.04 on Mac OSx 10.13

I have a 2018 Macbook Pro and I am trying to dual boot Ubuntu. I have been following this guide: https://www.maketecheasier.com/insta...ot-ubuntu-mac/. I am using reFIND as my boot manager, and have partitioned my disk with a 200 GB MS-DOS FAT partition using disk utility. When I load Ubuntu via the USB and try to install Ubuntu, it cannot see the partition I have created and says there is not enough space to install Ubuntu (only sees the 4gb on my USB). How do I proceed? I've tried Ubuntu versions 16.04 and the latest 18.04 as well. Any help would be much appreciated :)

If I upgrade to 18.04 from a USB will I get the option to keep 16.04.Got a feeling that that was one of the options when trying to install 18.04.Something like it appears you have 16.04 would you like to keep it.

[ubuntu] Can someone verify my plan to install Ubuntu for a dual boot?

I just installed Win10 in my 1Tb HD.
I also have a 125Gb SSD drive, that has (or used to have) Win10. Not presently in the computer.
I was thinking of replacing the HD with the SSD, then boot off of an Ubuntu Life USB drive.
With Gparted format the SSD drive. Then install Ubuntu there.
Then bring back the HD drive and have both in the computer.
When starting, should I expect Grub recognizing both. Or should some extra work be needed, maybe with the help of Boot Repair Disk?

Or should I scratch the whole plan above and go with somebody else's suggestions?

Thanks guys!

[ubuntu] tool to look for file collisions in advance

there is a package i want to install but i have reason to believe there will be file collisions. i want to backup any such files into a tarball first. but i don't know what files to backup. i do want the install to override any such file collisions and i don't know if it will do that or not. if not, then clearly i will need to remove them in advance. all of this is to fix my backup system and i have no access to the backups, yet, to compare anything. a way to get the list of files for a package not yet installed would be a good start. a command like "apt list-files <package-name>" for packages not installed would have been useful.

Install Ubuntu Desktop on the Intel® NUC

Hello everyone. I have an Intel NUC7i7DNKE on which I have installed standard Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Desktop and it works well, except sensor support which only finds one working temperature sensor.

I have now found out that there exists a special "certified" image for the NUC: https://www.ubuntu.com/download/iot/intel-nuc-desktop
I have a few questions regarding this image for you experts out there: :D
- who has certified it? (Intel? , Ubuntu? ...)
- what are the differences between stock 16.04 and this NUC certified image?
- could I expect to get better sensor support using the certified image?

[ubuntu] Login Loop 16.04LTS to 18.04LTS

I am stuck in a login loop on upgrading from 16.04LTS to 18.04LTS.
It only happens for my user (two other users on same system can login OK; I am typing this from my son's login).
I can switch to tty and login just fine.
Booting from live DVD 18.04 works OK, so probably not hardware problem. (I have not separate graphics card.)
I have tried removing and recreating .Xauthority and .ICEauthority, although I'm not sure I did this right.
I also tried switching from gdm to lightdm and back with no success.
Help appreciated. I can post output or log files if necessary - please advise which one(s) as not too familiar with the different types.

[ubuntu] Trouble With Apt After Upgrade From 16.04 to 18.04

$

I ran an upgrade last night to go from 16.04LTS to 18.04LTS. This morning, the system told me that the upgrade failed due to an error and that it would run recovery. Well, it didn't run anything, so rebooted. When I did, the system is upgraded to 18.04 (as per lsb_release) but I had/have trouble with installing packages. Everything else seems to work, though.

First, it was telling me that I had broken packages (ubuntu-desktop). Well, I'm running the MATE desktop environment, so I did the suggested [sudo apt --fix-broken install] as well as an [autoremove] and [autoclean] which removed the ubuntu-desktop package along with some other files. I no longer show any broken packages BUT.... if I try to install any package from within the Synaptic Package Manager, that program becomes a broken package and I cannot go any further. If I run this install from the command line, this is what I get:

Code:

derek@derek-home:~$ sudo apt-get install vlc
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libgtk3-nocsd.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.

I ran a [purge] on vlc and then tried to reinstall it and I get the same error.

If I try to install tellico, I get this error:

Both of these were installed before the upgrade. Another question I have is... why does a dist-upgrade remove packages (like tellico) and can you not tell it to leave them alone!?

If I try to do an [upgrade] now, it tells me that there are packages held back:

Code:

derek@derek-home:~$ sudo apt-get upgrade
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libgtk3-nocsd.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.

  libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18 libsuil-0-0 libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37 pulseview
  sigrok
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 9 not upgraded.

If I try to do a [dist-upgrade] now, it tries to remove the mate-desktop environment! This is what I am talking about....

Code:

derek@derek-home:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
ERROR: ld.so: object 'libgtk3-nocsd.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.

newly installed 18.04.1 on new laptop has no wifi and crashes on opening settings

I got a new laptop (this one). I've made fresh new live-USB and installed Ubuntu.
Wifi was not available during this install.

Most of the time the system freezes when I login, I can move the mouse but it does not do anything.

Only way to get into the system is via recovery.

And still no Wifi. Pluging in a cable works.
But when I open system settings the windows doesn't show up and the system freezes.

Where do I start looking?

The laptop is a pretty new model, are there drivers incomplete?

I also installed updates with the cable plugged-in, no difference.

[ubuntu] find when a package was originally installed

the file /var/log/dpkg.log shows very recent package update dates. but it only goes back so far. my guess is that apt* commands are keeping it under some maximum size. all the information in that file on my laptop is from this month, the earliest being 2018-08-06 18:44:59. there are a bunch of history files in /var/log/apt but they only go back about one year (2017-08) but i need to go back to about 2016-06.

is there a way to find when a package was originally installed?

i do not need this for packages included in the original system install (i did an install of this 16.04 LTS system fresh. all partitions of this 1TB disk were wiped to binary zero before starting the install which then had to format everything. so nothing remained from the previous 14.04 LTS system. i plan to the same for my next major upgrade which will probably be 20.04 LTS a couple months after it is out (June/July tends to be a convenient time and it will have had a couple months of shaking out bugs). yes, i am skipping 18.04.

I am trying to install ubuntu in a dual boot and I'm running into a problem. It says that 8.6gb is required for installation and only 8gb is available. I created a live usb using rufus, departitioned 200gb on my ssd drive and left it unallocated. I turned of secure boot settings in the bios. I then used the shutdown command in the console to fully shut down windows. Then I select to run from the usb in the boot menu. It still does not recognize the space I left for it. Does anyone have any input on this?
