Unable to boot or format after swapping HDD

$

0
Device: Lenovo G580

I am new to ubuntu and installed Ubuntu on my daily drive laptop 2 months ago, since then I had lost access to BIOS settings, as soon as I turn it on it boots to ubuntu and pressing all recommended keys only take me to grub2

Now today I messed up it more. I had another laptop laying around which had low config but 1 TB HDD, I decided to swap my 500 Gb Lenovo HDD with 1 TB

I simply swapped the HDD and formatted both HDD thinking I will be able to boot with the Bootable pendrive.

But now my Lenovo does not boots only shows a blackscreen.

The other HP laptop is working fine so I formatted 500 GB HDD with Windows 10 and 1 tb with Ubuntu, but Lenovo laptop still doesn’t work even if I put the newly formatted 1 TB hdd while that boots correctly on the HP laptop.

What can I do to recover my Laptop to install any OS.

Hello,

I want to install ubuntu 18.04 with full disk encryption. But, I also want to do manual partitioning of the hard drive while installing with /boot/efi, /boot, / and /home on separate partitions with additional partitions for swap. Can someone please tell me how I can go about achieving both of these aims??

Hi

I am windows user for long time, now i have planned for Migration to Linux so i am planning to delete windows and install Linux but i have a concern
1. My Partitions(D,E,F etc) has large amount of Data , i don`t want to delete these partitions so is it possible to retain these and Install Linux without Dual boot Option.
2. As i am new to Linux, what all i need to keep in mind to work on Desktop Linux Versions.
3. Is Dual Boot Option good for me as i am planning to complete Migration.
please help me with Video links for proper understanding.
Hope for the Answers..

[ubuntu] my update to 18.04 has a problem.

after updating to 18.04 I get an error message: 'Error: BrokenCount >0'

I've run apt-get install -f and get:

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

and this is as far as I get.

When running updates I get: 'The Package system is broken.' and nothing further happens of course.

I am not a competent Ubuntu user and don't really unterstand much of what I'm doing in this field, and so would appreciate some help in a user friendly language please! :p
Thanks
Andrew

After checking the snap help, I tried "start" and "run" command without success. Does anybody use Node-Red on ubuntu Core (Raspberry Pi image) ?

I have tried upgrading from a live USB, but the upgrade option was not available.
As I am quite sure that the upgrade is available (I do get the notification), what could cause the system to become not upgradeable? Should I remove some of the PPAs or just do a clean install?

Help would be appreciated!

P.S. If it matters, I have a dual boot system with Windows on the other partition.

RPi GPIO Library on Ubuntu Snappy Core

Hello,

I started to play with ubuntu core to make a simple monitoring tools. To comply with my poor level and lack of time for developping it, I would like to run Node-Red on Ubuntu Core (that's working), the problem is I can't install the RPi GPIO library to access to them via Node-Red.
I installed the Classic Snap to run those commands :

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install python-pip python-dev
sudo pip install RPi.GPIO

Everything run smoothly except the last one. When I running it, I'm stuck with that :

Cannot boot to windows after installing Lubuntu

I have Windows 10 on my computer and I decided to try to dual boot it with Lubuntu.
I created a small partition, created a bootable usb drive, installed Lubuntu and now I can't get to Windows 10 anymore.

In the menu of which OS I want to load, Lubuntu works just fine every time. However, when I select windows, it just loops right back around to the Choose OS screen.

One person suggested I run 'sudo update-grub' and then restart my computer. That didn't work. What should I try next?

[ubuntu] 14.04.1 After booting DVD(ISO) chose Live from disc -usb Keyboard and usb mouse dead.

I downloaded an ISO and ran sha256Sum on the iso. Verified OK. Created Install DVD using K3B and 'verify after write' - OK. Boots OK to first screen where I can select to run live from Disc or Install or check disk for defects. The usb keyboard works at this point. I can scrollup and down and enter selects OK. The loading begins and the Keyboard goes dead. (It has lighted keys which go off). When it finally initializes the desktop and shows a display on both monitors (Dual monitor set up) at that time the mouse and keyboard are DEAD.

I set the BIOS to boot from the DVD. I have tried with legacy usb support turned on and also off - with no difference. I know the usb keyboard and mouse are working on this machine because they both work when I boot Fedora 28 from the internal hard drive (an SSD). No trouble what so ever there.
I am at a loss as what to try next.

Can we install ubuntu on an external disk and boot on it?

Hi guys, i've got a hp probook x360 11 g1 ee intel celeron and hd intel graphics with 4G of ram. This pc was known to block any attempt to boot on an external storage. Such as grub. You can find a report her at this link : https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/b.../msg00010.html

When i tried to boot it give me that Selecting this just causes the screen to go black with a blinking cursor and... that's the end."

But by chance, i booted with a ubuntu 18 iso key and i succeded to boot on grub bootloader (what a miracle) i though that freedom was acheived but no. At the ubuntu installation it stuck at "installing grub 2 package". Meh too bad (unless you have an idea) so my question is can i install ubuntu on a external drive and boot in as it was a usb key? (i think it's the only way for me to make ubuntu work) thanks in advance.

No "quiet splash" but still no boot messages

$

I have a multi boot/EFI system. I started with Windows 10, installed mint 18, later Ubuntu 18. So I had Windows 10, Mint 18 and Ubuntu 18 in that order using the last one as default system. I removed “quiet splash” from GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="" and could see the boot messages.

To test some options I next installed Ubuntu 16 over Mint 18. Ubuntu 16 installed a graphic grub with no boot messages. Without cheking I assumed that the “quiet splash” is default for any ubuntu system. I left that as it was because I only wanted to test some options. After the test I used grub-install from ubuntu 18 and deleted the partition with ubuntu 16.

I have not been able to get the boot messages back. There is some kind of gray/brown color when I boot, in the same color as the graphics boot screen I got from ubuntu 16. There is no “quiet splash” in /etc/default/grub, nor can I see one when I edit the commandline during boot. There are a lot of suggestions on the web, but none worked. The current /etc/default/grub is listed below. It appears as if there is some persistent left-over from ubuntu 16. Could the be? If so, how can I test that?

Anybody any idea about what is wrong with my grub setup?

GRUB issues in dual boot LUKS Encrypted Ubuntu + VeraCrypt Encrypted Windows 10

I just tried out the newly posted manual full disk encryption instructions here today and I have to say they work very well . The only difference in my case was that I had to leave the installer "hanging" (running) after the second post-install error message:
popped up because the "close" button wouldn't actually close the message and the installer. I just told the script to conitnue running, which it successfully did and completed. In my case in particular I had some problems with Qt5 packages after installation in programs like keepassx (which I resolved by reinstalling all the relevant packages using synaptic).

Both ubuntu and windows systems work. I can get to the drive decryption password screen for ubuntu through GRUB but now the GRUB entry for Windows 10 does not work anymore. I have edited the grub.cfg entry for the Windows entry through the grub-customizer tool (in ubuntu if it isn't already obvious) to point at the EFI file for the veracrypt bootloader. I confirmed that the veracrypt EFI file exists.

However when I select the windows entry in grub I get to a blue Windows "Recovery" screen.

I can still boot into veracrypt through selecting the vera crypt entry in the BIOS menu so I'm pretty sure this is a GRUB problem.

How should I fix this?

Stuck at Ubuntu 18.04 loading screen

Hi guys, i have a problem on my other pc, a dell optiplex 755 intel core 2 duo with integrated graphic card and 2G.

I tried to install ubuntu 16.04 (32-bit) and it worked without any problem. Now i tried to move on ubuntu 18.04 (64bit) by doing a clean flash (iso key booter, erase disk, install ubuntu). The installation is succesful and when i boot i have grub bootloader (with the choice to move on ubuntu or windows 7 (64bit, it work well too)) But when i chose to boot on ubuntu, it stuck at the loading screen after 3 min and the mouse is stuck too. I don't know why but ubuntu 16.04 (64 bit) do the same thing. Do you have any idea? Is 64bit linux impossible for me? although windows 7 64bit work?

[ubuntu] r-base-dev and sundials/cmake installation conflict - Please Help!!

Hi all,

I just upgraded to U18.04, less out of choice, more because my previous OS (16.04) had an identity crisis and the fix suggested was to reinstall Ubuntu. And perhaps unsurprisingly I'm having some teething issues.

I use the library sundials and and IDE which relies on cmake in numerical models written in C++ so these packages are essential! But I also study the output of my simulations using R, so also essential!

Unfortunately when I try to install r-base-dev or r-base-core I get a warning regarding unmet dependencies that apparently can only be resolved by removing packages that are essential to my work!

The following is the prompt/output in a linux shell. Note I use a partitioned Mac so don't be fooled by the username, this is Ubuntu 18.04

Code:

jack@jack-MacBookPro:~$ sudo aptitude install r-base-dev
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  cdbs{a} dh-translations{a} intltool{a} jq{a} libcurl3{ab} libjq1{a} liblzma-dev{a} libonig4{a} libreadline-dev{a} r-base-core{a} r-base-dev r-cran-boot{ab} r-cran-class{a}
  r-cran-cluster{a} r-cran-codetools{ab} r-cran-foreign{a} r-cran-kernsmooth{a} r-cran-lattice{a} r-cran-mass{a} r-cran-matrix{a} r-cran-mgcv{a} r-cran-nlme{a} r-cran-nnet{a}
  r-cran-rpart{a} r-cran-spatial{ab} r-cran-survival{a} r-doc-html{a} r-recommended{a}
0 packages upgraded, 28 newly installed, 0 to remove and 10 not upgraded.
Need to get 15.9 MB/40.6 MB of archives. After unpacking 64.9 MB will be used.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libcurl3 : Conflicts: libcurl4 but 7.58.0-2ubuntu3.2 is installed
libcurl4 : Conflicts: libcurl3 but 7.58.0-2ubuntu2 is to be installed
r-cran-boot : Depends: r-api-3.4 which is a virtual package, provided by:
                        - r-base-core (3.4.4-1ubuntu1), but 3.4.4-1xenial0 is to be installed

r-cran-spatial : Depends: r-api-3.4 which is a virtual package, provided by:
                          - r-base-core (3.4.4-1ubuntu1), but 3.4.4-1xenial0 is to be installed

r-cran-codetools : Depends: r-api-3.4 which is a virtual package, provided by:
                            - r-base-core (3.4.4-1ubuntu1), but 3.4.4-1xenial0 is to be installed

The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

    Remove the following packages:
1)    cmake [3.10.2-1ubuntu2 (bionic, now)]
2)    libcurl4 [7.58.0-2ubuntu3.2 (bionic-security, bionic-updates, now)]
3)    libsundials-dev [2.7.0+dfsg-2build1 (bionic, now)]

Keep the following packages at their current version:
4)    r-cran-boot [Not Installed]
5)    r-cran-codetools [Not Installed]
6)    r-cran-spatial [Not Installed]
7)    r-recommended [Not Installed]

    Leave the following dependencies unresolved:
8)    r-base-core recommends r-recommended

Accept this solution? [Y/n/q/?] Y

Does anyone with a better understanding of the inner workings of the Linux OS than me have any advice as to how to resolve this conflict???

Thankyou!

Jack
