Unable to boot after clean install of 18.04

Dear Ubuntu community, I've been struggling to get my laptop to boot into Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04 for several weeks now and any help would be much appreciated!

I have a simple laptop for traveling: an Acer R3-131T that shipped with Windows 10. I had been using Ubuntu 16.04 for several months when an odd problem popped up and I attempted to start fresh with a clean install of Ubuntu 18.04. After reinstalling I have been unable to get the computer to boot from it's internal drive- currently it shows the Acer logo and briefly flashes some terminal output before going black and attempting to boot again.

I have been able to boot using a USB drive with the Ubuntu Installer and also using a boot repair USB drive and I was also able to successfully restore and boot a backup of Windows 10 using Clonezilla. I was unable to boot my backup of Ubuntu 16.04 or boot after installing a fresh copy of 16.04.

For additional information - this machine uses UEFI, secure boot is turned off and my boot options menu currently shows only Linpus Lite. Here is the output from my boot repair attempt: http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/p/HWbn48Gf4t/

Many thanks!

Newly cloned ssd will not boot into Ubuntu 18.04 but it will boot into Windows 10.

Hi, I am new to the Linux world and have made a successful installation of Ubuntu 18.04 on a couple of laptops. I have been loving it so far, but I have recently ran into a problem. I decided to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 7537 hybrid drive to a new ssd from Crucial. In the process I used an Inatek usb caddy and Macrium Reflect cloning software. When it was completed Macrium shows the two drives one on top of the other so we can see that the new clone has identical info and all looked good. So, I installed the new ssd and it will boot into Windows 10 immediately and completely bypass the Grub menu (old drive went straight to Grub and gave me the option for which OS I want to boot from). Also, when I press f12 upon booting the boot menu will show Ubuntu, but when I click on it the system boots Windows instead. Furthermore, I decided to boot from the usb that I originally installed Ubuntu from (thinking of a fresh install) and I can get into the Grub menu. However, when I click on Ubuntu it will turn on the bootloader screen and instead of booting it will end with a black page that has some kind of failing text. I forget what the text says but I can come back and post it.

Update on black screen, 4 lines:
Couldn’t get size
Failed to set xfermode (err_mask=0x40)
Busybox v1.27.2
(Initramfs) unable to find a medium containing a live file system.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 18.04 HDMI not working

In the past this was the least of my worries, but here we are. I just moved from one LTS to another and made a sort of fresh install (only / partition).
Now I have this black screen with a blinking pointer whenever I plug in my HDMI cable.
I have revised previous posts and seems this problem is a year old, yet all the solutions out there doesn't seem to work.
I'll display all the basics you might ask, and help me find a solution.

[ubuntu] Fresh install boot problem

I previously dual-booted uibuntu with windows 10 on a 240gb SSD. I have a spare 120 ssd so removed ubuntu from the 240 and installed on the 120 but can't get ubuntu to boot. I get grub with instructions to tab for possible commands. I can still boot windows if I change in uefi but the ubuntu boot won't work. I had /, home and swap and it gave an error that I needed a uefi bios boot partition which I ignored. When it didn't boot I created said partition but still no boot. Any idaes?

Is there anyway to verify that apt-get is downloading from an official source? Some of my updates are downloading from a location that struck me as odd.

Ubuntu 16.04 starts in low graphics mode after kernel upgrade to 4.17.x

I have just upgraded my PC build to coffee lake with an i7 8700k. I installed Ubuntu 16.04 from my live pen drive that has been around for quite a while. The kernel version installed was 4.4.130. Everything was fully functional, except not having any sound.
I figured it would be some driver problem due to how old the kernel is, so I upgraded to 4.17.8. The upgrade gave some Intel graphic driver missing errors. I downloaded the required binaries from their site(all the missing bins were skylake, kabylake or broxton, nothing related to coffee lake)
Next I had to install libssl 1.1.0 which was not natively available for 16.04. After finally completing the installation of 4.17.8 I rebooted only to be greeted by a black screen with a message saying, system started in low graphics mode and that I would have to manually configure graphics drivers.
I still had my 4.4 kernel which boots just fine. I used it to remove 4.17.8 and installed 4.17.0 in hopes that it would be more stable and not as much bleeding edge as 4.17.8, but nothing changed.
Please guide me to correctly set up Intel UHD 630 graphics for kernel version 4.17.x

[ubuntu] Install (and upgrade) on new SSD

Hi

In the next few weeks I will be upgrading my 16.04 system to 18.04 and getting a new SSD drive to use for the root partition (home and data will remain on the drives where they are). Are there any special precautions I should be taking or things I could miss when doing this? The system is a general use / mythtv box.

I know the first thing to do is to make sure I have a full backup before starting.

Thank you

David

Migrating Mail Server VM, Requesting Help on Postfix and Dovecot Files to Move/Update

$

Hi, I have a mail server running on a VirtualBox 5.2 VM. Built a a couple years ago using Perfect Server instructions, Ubuntu 16.04 Server, Apache, MySql, PHP7, Postfix, Dovecot (pop only, not imap), roundcube, ispconfig.

It's been 100% rock solid, but when I first installed Virtualbox, I didn't realize installing my mail server on a dynamic disk would cause it to explode over time to 300GB due to dozens of snapshots taken and deleted when I was setting it up. It's only using about 10GB of of actual data so backing it up has been a painfully slow.

I want to migrate it to a new 30GB fixed size disk to make it easier to do backups. I started by rebuilding the same base server by installing the same versions of all the packages on my current VM.

I've moved dumps of my roundcube, ispconfig, phpmyadmin, and mysql databases to the new machine. I've also rsync'ed my entire vmail folder and dovecot folder, and postfix main.cf and master.cf files. I believe overwriting the main.cf and master.cf files is all I need to do for postfix. But for dovecot, are there other files I need to be looking at besides just dovecot.conf? I simply don't remember if I had to modify other dovecot files when I set this up previously.

Any suggestions on important things to consider as I proceed?

Thanks as always

[ubuntu] Probability of Success for this Desktop - Linux Only Install

$

Recently one of my friends at our local PC club requested that I install Ubuntu on her HP desktop. It's not use able now because for the second time in a year she has some nasty malware - and she is tired of dealing with that and other complexities of Windows 10. So she wants to nuke Windows entirely and run only Linux.

So, can I get some input as to the odds of a successful install on an HP desktop with these specs:

HP Envy750-177c
> Intel I7 6700 cpu
> Intel Integrated 530 Graphics
> 16 GiB DDR3L Ram
> Realtek Network chipset (ethernet)
> Odense Motherboard H110

I "think" the machine should be very Ubuntu friendly, but I've never installed to an HP UEFI machine. If I change the UEFI/BIOS to "Legacy" mode and let the installer overwrite the whole disk, will I still need any of the UEFI elements on the HDD (like and EFI partition and modifying the HP Windows version of the bootloader)??? Will the Grub bootloader install as in the pre-UEFI days and just load Ubuntu?

Any feedback is appreciated.

New Install- Disk Partition and Failed GRUB Install

This seems simple but I haven't done an install this way before. I originally did a fresh Ubuntu install over a windows install (single boot Ubuntu 18.04) and walked though the installer. After booted up I wanted to create a snapshot so of my root directory so I could make some changes and rollback if needed. I found the installer used 100% of my /root and I had no space left for snapshots. Instead of trying to shrink the file system and then the LV I'm attempting to boot to the installer liveUSB and from there create the partition setup and the LVM, then do the install so I have a LV on the same VG for snapshots of my /root. Please see below for my partition setup. For some reason the GRUB boot loader doesn't like this and I'm not sure why. The first partition is boot then the second is swap, then my FS is on the LV. I keep getting the below error about GRUB. If this looks ok maybe i did something wrong and need to double check myself. Any suggestions? Thanks.

[ubuntu] Unable to get fresh Ubuntu 18.04 install to boot

$

Hi there,

I'm having a major headache trying to get Ubuntu installed. I'm trying to install to a blank, freshly formatted 120Gb SSD (sda) with a second 3TB HDD for /tmp, /home and swap (sdb).

Both disks are using a GPT partition table but the BIOS is set to Legacy, not EFI.

At first I went through the normal steps for a fresh install - used the 'Install' option from a Live CD and opted for manual partitioning. I set everything up as described above (with the entire SSD given over to /, 8Gb for /tmp on the HDD, 8Gb for swap and the rest all /home). Installation was a breeze but when I came to reboot I was met with a black screen saying:
Code:

error: attempt to read or write outside of disk hd0.
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue> _

I did a bit of googling and found this. I tried the accepted solution but to no avail. I just got exactly the same error message again.

So, going back to the drawing board I found another possible solution which was to create a 1Gb /boot partition at the start of the disk. I re-installed and this time created the suggested 1Gb /boot partition on the SSD, then the rest of that drive to / with /tmp, /home etc on the HDD. I rebooted after installation and this time just got a black screen with a blinking cursor (that wouldn't respond to keyboard input) and nothing else. No error message. Same thing happened after a few restarts and a cold boot.

I re-read the article (I'm sorry I can't find it again to link to it now) and noticed that I'd missed one important step of the suggested solution - pointing the boot manager installation to sda1 (the /boot partition) instead of the root of the sda drive. So, I did it all over again making that one change but again it didn't work. However this time something new happened on reboot - I was met with a purple screen with the following error message:
Code:

error: failure reading sector 0x9f600 from 'hd0'.
press any key to continue..._

But no matter what keys I pressed it failed to respond... except once - just once - when I left it sitting at that screen for a good 5 minutes or so whilst I was doing some research from my laptop it all of a sudden decided it was going to boot! I was able to log in and mess around with no obvious problems. Just a nice fresh Ubuntu install seemingly working perfectly. Feeling brave I rebooted to see what would happen... and got the same purple screen with the same error message again. Except now it won't even boot after leaving it sitting at that screen for over 20 minutes! It just booted that once and never since.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on or how I can get this installed?

If it matters the SATA controller is set to AHCI in the BIOS and, as mentioned earlier, the BIOS is in Legacy mode, not EFI. The SSD is relatively new and was taken out of my Windows 10 rig after a recent upgrade. It was working perfectly fine in that rig and I had a look at the SMART data just before I removed it and it was reported as being in excellent health, so I doubt it's a problem with the drive.

Oh, almost forgot! I also read about creating a Legacy BIOS Boot (or words to that effect) partition on the drive so I tried that but I didn't get the option to create on of those on the SSD, only on the HDD. I decided there was nothing to lose by giving it a go so I created it on the HDD, pointed the boot loader installation to that drive and tried again (but still with / on the SSD and the rest of the HDD partitioned as before, except for the new addition) but again no joy, not unexpectedly. I can't remember if I got any specific error messages or not that time though, sorry.

Anyways, sorry for the lengthy post. Wanted to give as much info as I could. Let me know if you need any more details.

Thanks in advance!

[ubuntu] Offline Release Upgrade

Hi all.
So this is a slightly curly left field issue.

I have a number of virtual appliance type deployments, at sites with flakey at best internet connections. Even when it works, its so filtered that its almost non existent. I need to do a release update to update some application level issues (the reason isnt what is important here)

do-release-upgrade fails because connectivity isnt good enough. I dont have the disk space nor the on the ground assistance to create a local ubuntu mirror and force the upgrade to use that, or any physical access to any of the devices.
We do have an SSH tunnel for support and maintenance, and unless theres a better suggestion, tunneling all internet traffic via the SSH tunnel is currently at the top of the list, however this still isnt great from a speed or bandwidth point of view.
What other options are there ? Is there an apt-offline type tool which can handle release upgrades ?

Ive been searching and searching, to no avail at this point. Has anyone got any left field ideas ?

We have a different deployment type, running BSD, which is fully offline and this works great (its fairly manual, and basically does the equivalent of a delete /boot and /kernel, and extract new ones), but i cant find any sort of equivalent.

Thanks,
Dan.

This is a new Ubuntu 18.04 gnome desktop and its ISO was recently download on Ubuntu website. It was installed on a new 2TB SSD from an USB stick.

Is there any way to fix this problem. OR I have to reinstall Ubuntu 18.04?

In the later case do I need to re-download its ISO on Ubuntu website?

Please advise. Thanks

2) After Installation of Bionic Beaver it will not allow one to restore Backups from 14.04.
3) If your try installing Systemback it informs that it is not supported on 18.04
4) If you try installing Aptik the same happens once it gets to the thread on Systemback Error 404 occurs.

I urge the Ubuntu community to try a find a way around the same as this is a nightmare. We rely on Ubuntu for Data Integrity!!:(
