How do I fix this issue?

How does ubuntu know I have existing operating systems if it can't see my drive

Hello!

I am attempting to install ubuntu onto a USB drive completely separate from my main hard drive, I don't want to boot up my computer normally and see a grub prompt if my USB is not plugged in.

I just got the classic "Force UEFI Installation?" popup:
Code:

This machine's firmware has started the installer in UEFI mode but it looks like there may be existing operating systems already installed using "BIOS compatibility mode". If you continue to install Debian in UEFI mode, it might be difficult to reboot the machine into any BIOS-mode operating systems later.
How does ubuntu know this? It can't even see my hard drive because it is RAID storage. I don't want to force an installation if there is any chance that it will install GRUB to my main drive

i have an acer e5-575, which was previously running ubuntu 16.04. automatic upgrade wasn't working so i installed 18.04 through USB. booting from the USB works fine, and the installation doesn't seem to show any errors, but boot keeps showing "default boot device missing or boot failed".

Hi,

Such a shame, will trying installing 18.04 for the first time this morning and just realize Ubuntu did not offer french as supported language on installation.

I was using Ubuntu server since 10.04, but I want it in french, Do I have to move on Debian or Centos as they are still installable in french.

Trying to fill an issue on Launchpad trhow me an error and talking with Canonical support, he told me "French is still free", but it is not available

Fix-it or please WRITE IN BOLD "NE FRENCH SUPPORT"

Thank you

Adding Ubuntu 18.04 to my dual boot Win10/Utuntu18.04 no space too etc.

I must keep Win10 working. I am currently using Win10 and grub as my boot loader. I have a working Ubuntu 18.04 system with very limited space. I want to put Ubuntu on my 1.5TB drive and keep Win10 booting OK. I don't know where Grub is or where I should tell the Installer grub is. How can I find out? Win10 is on another drive, size 500GB letter "C:".
I am a very experienced microcomputer programmer, around 47 years of computer experience. But very little Unix/Linux knowledge. I am also looking for a Ubuntu friend. Thank you all for any help. On a quad core AMD 65 bit.
Sincerely,
Chris Walters
PS I don't even know how to edit grub.

unable to install mysql 5.7 on ubuntu 18.04

i am using the digital ocean instructions to install mysql https://www.digitalocean.com/communi...n-ubuntu-18-04

after i type sudo apt install mysql-server
iget the error msg
unable to start mysql server
mysqld: can't read dir of '/etc/mysql/conf.d/'

i used chmod 777 to change permissions on that directory then i ran
sudi apt-get --fix-broken install

only to get the exact same error.

I have seen several threads with a similar issue but none of them ended in a resolution.

is it even possible to install mysql 5.7 on ubuntu 18.04. If so how? where else can turn to for help on this issue?

Kubuntu and Samsung Chromebook 3

Hey All
So I thought I'd have a go at installing Kubuntu on my Samsung Chromebook 3
Give it a 10GB partition and just mess around.

Do you reckon that the hardware that I have in the Chromebook will be usable?
the output of xinput -list

Is this hardware supported? is there a place to check?
Would I be better off booting into 16.04LTS instead of 18.04?

[ubuntu] GRUB Installation Failed

I previously downloaded Ubuntu 18.04 LTS .ISO file(s) to an USB flash drive. I clicked on the 2nd line that stated about installing, instead of the first line that says try it without installing. How it figured out that I have two SSDs, the one with Windows 10 and the other with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, I don't know, but it said that 18.04 LTS was already loaded. It gave me a choice of doing a 2nd load, with the two installations being sided by side, or delete what was there and do a fresh install. I chose delete and install. It got about half way done with the install and I got "Grub installation failed". "The 'grub-efi-amd64-signed' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot". "Installer crashed".

It asked if I wanted to do a bug report. I answered yes and it came up with information and I filled out my info. It accepted the bug report but I don't know where it went or where to go to look at it. Everything looked as it came from this Ubuntu forum as it asked for my e-mail and password and had my user name. There is no "bug report" tab here on the forum. Where did it go and how do I get to it to check status?

If I am running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS from my USB flash drive how do I get to the SSD with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on it so I can issue the command at the terminal to wipe the SSD, that is set all the cells to zero. And then I would have the USB flash drive do an install. But how do I make sure the install goes to the SSD that is now blank?

[ubuntu] Freezes when loading, after upgrade from Ubuntu 17 to 18

Hello,

I am a new Ubuntu user. Version 17 was my first install.:) When I upgraded to version 18, the computer now locks up when loading.
The computer is a Dell Optiplex 755, with Intel Core 2 Duo. Let me know if you'd like any other specs from the machine.
I do have a new SSHD in the machine (it replaced the old hard drive, so there is only the one hard drive in it)

So far, I have tried re-installing Ubuntu from a USB boot stick. (several flavors, and also version 17)
each time, the computer freezes once I select either the "preview" option, or the install option.

Thank you for taking a look!

18.04 mini.iso software choices

$

Hi - I just updated my mini.iso USB and did an install of Lubuntu Minimal. I noticed that for Lubuntu minimal, there were two additional choices that included GTK and QT in the title. Does anyone know how those installs look and act differently than the Lubuntu Minimal install? Do the 2 choices have different software? Or is it appearance, or something else?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read and respond.

[ubuntu] a list of alternate repositories

does anyone know of a list of alternate repositories that offer alternate packages or package versions for older Ubuntu (still in support), such as 16.04 LTS, that the official repositories do not have? for example i was looking for one that had a more recent version of Python (such as 3.7.0).

Scripts to partially automate Ubuntu 18.04 on ZFS installation

$

Have some fairly rudimentary scripts I threw together while installing Ubuntu 18.04 on ZFS using a live ISO flash drive.

This definitely makes things easier for me and MUCH faster than going step-by-step. But make sure you understand what each command does and verify that it's what you want if you're going to try it.

I recommend you ONLY use it on a system with just ONE DRIVE you're going to dedicate to Ubuntu unless you really know what you're doing - and even then, you'll have to modify it quite a bit.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Adapted from this how-to:
https://github.com/zfsonlinux/zfs/wi...04-Root-on-ZFS

If you want more granular detail or a LUKS installation, or a BIOS installation rather than EFI, you can check there and do it step by step.

Or you can just install it without encryption using EFI by copying my scripts here and running them.

Sound good? OK! Let's get started -

Download live ISO for desktop here:
https://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

Note: Will not work with 'live server' ISO.

Instructions:

Boot ISO -

select try ubuntu

select live user

commands - run:

ctrl-alt-t [to open terminal]

Code:

passwd [enter passwd for ubuntu user]
sudo su root
apt install -y openssh-server
ip addr

From another computer, log into the system running the live ISO:

Code:

ssh ubuntu@[ip addr]
sudo su root

Copy this script and run from ssh terminal --- there's a few things you'll likely have to change in the script:

1) paste it into nano and use ctrl-\ to find-and-replace your boot drive assignment after identifying it with lsblk.
2) change /etc/netplan/controllername.yaml to reflect your device name desired network settings

Code:

#!/bin/bash
# init
function pause(){
  read -p "$*"
}

# ...
# call it
pause 'NOTE: Will pause occasionally to verify stuff. If you're awake, press [Enter] key to continue or CTRL-C to abort and re-tool the rest of the script'
# ...
add-apt-repository universe
apt update
apt install -y openssh-server zfs-initramfs gdisk debootstrap

5.3 Optional (but highly recommended): Make debugging GRUB easier:

nano /etc/default/grub

#Comment out: GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
#Remove quiet and splash from: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT
#Uncomment: GRUB_TERMINAL=console
#Save and quit.

#Update the boot configuration and install grub:

Code:

update-grub
#Take your first snapshot:

Code:

zfs snapshot rpool/ROOT/ubuntu@install
#Verify that the ZFS module is installed:

Code:

ls /boot/grub/*/zfs.mod
#should return: /boot/grub/x86_64-efi/zfs.mod

Note: You do NOT want to reboot before that last command gives you the correct result. If it doesn't, you're likely going to reboot to brick. If there's a problem, be sure to go back over the code and try and find anything that went wrong and do it again, or just run the whole thing over again (will likely have to reboot and clear drive again if you're all the way in chroot).

---- still need to do the below steps before you can cleanly reboot ----

#Exit chroot and umount zfs stuff, export rpool

Code:

exit
mount | grep -v zfs | tac | awk '/\/mnt/ {print $3}' | xargs -i{} umount -lf {}
zpool export -f rpool

reboot

Enjoy your ZFS-on-root Ubuntu 18.04!

[SOLVED] Unity3D shortcut missing

I went and installed Unity3D from the standard installation procedure on their Linux page:
https://forum.unity.com/threads/unit....350256/page-2

It installed completely fine and ran, but once I closed it, I could never see it again, there are no shortcuts anywhere to call it. How can I find Unity again and maybe even place it on my dock so I can launch it again.

I have installed my firs 18.04 server and am working to get it configured.

During boot I get 2 sucessive message with delays. Neither prevent the system booting but both indicate somethig is not quite right

I get a message something like
Code:

md1 has detected a capacity change from 0 to ...
followed by a delay

then a message
Code:

Warning cannot contact lvmetd not contacted falling back
followed by another delay.

I suspect that the init images are not exactly correct and the problem wil be resolved at the nex kerenl update. I'm not too concerned sine it does boot correctly., but I was wondering if there is something else I can to address these and speed up booting.

[xubuntu] How to change color palette on agnosterzak in Xubuntu

Hello,

I recently downloaded oh-my-zsh on my linux shell and then downloaded the theme called AgnosterZak. Everything went fine, but the colors that came with the installations look ugly. I was wondering how to change these, since I could not find any file or even a setting on the .zshrc file. Can someone tell me how to change the color palette on the theme AgnosterZak?

Thanks,

[ubuntu] Can't boot after installing Ubuntu 18.04 LTS

$

I recently decided to replace Windows 10 on my laptop (ASUS VivoBook E403SA-US21) with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. This isn't my first time installing Ubuntu, so I thought it'd be a piece of cake.
I downloaded the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS amd64 image and created a bootable USB drive using Rufus and GPT partition scheme (UEFI, non-CSM). I disabled Fast Startup in Windows, as well as disabling Fast Boot and Secure Boot in the BIOS. However, when I tried to install, I got the following errors:

usb 2-1: device not accepting address 2, error -62
usb 2-1: device not accepting address 3, error -62
usb 2-1: device not accepting address 4, error -71
usb 2-1: device not accepting address 5, error -71

(initramfs) Unable to find a medium containing a live file system

I am unsure as to why this is happening. Considering that both Windows and the USB drive are using GPT, there is no obvious reason the drive shouldn't be working. I have tried multiple times to get the USB to work, but to no avail.

I am getting frustrated as I need this machine for work and was hoping it would be a quick install. Any help would be very much appreciated.

UPDATE: Tried switching to a USB 2.0 port, and got endless "device descriptor read/64, error -71" errors followed by "unable to enumerate USB device"

[lubuntu] Generic Icons in Lubuntu Minimal install from mini.iso

I just installed Lubuntu Minimal 18.04 from mini.iso. Most of the icons in the taskbars of the desktop and applications are a generic sheet of paper. Does anyone know how to change this without going and changing each individual icon? Is it because of the type of install? Is there a package I need that will do this?

Thanks!
