[ubuntu] 12.10 or 13.04 (beta)?

$

I'm not exactly sure if this is even the right forum to ask this question, but here it goes.

I'm in a situation where one of my best friends gave me his laptop to fix. I suggested Ubuntu to him, and he was open to the idea, so I'm putting it on his laptop. However, the timing is a bit awkward; I'm putting Ubuntu on his laptop when the release of 13.04 is right around the corner. He's not exactly a computer-literate person like I am, so this is pretty new to him. I also hear that Ubuntu 13.04 is much more stable than even the final version of 12.10.

So the question is, should I still set the laptop up with 12.10, or would it be okay to put 13.04 on it?

I like the idea of 13.04, because it's more stable. But it's still a beta version as of now. Would the beta installation seamlessly become the final stable release over time, with the next batch of updates that it gets?

Or would I be playing it safer with 12.10?

Share your opinions. ^^ Thanks!

[ubuntu] Failure When Attempting to Dual-Boot with Windows 8

Ok, I tried installing Ubuntu 12.10 and when installing I went to click on Something Else to install to a pre-made partition but when I clicked on continue I realised I either missed (don't laugh) or the mouse didn't click properly but it went straight to formatting and trying to do a complete install. Luckily just as it started formatting there was an error and in my panic I didn't think to write it down. After exiting the installer I checked to see if my windows partition was still ok, thankfully it was and I could still see and access everything. I then re-started my laptop to try and boot back into windows 8.

No dice, I get the error Media Check [Fail] and I can now only boot up using Live Ubuntu, I tried installing Ubunutu on a seperate 8.5GB partition I had but no dice there either.

Tried using Boot-Repair and that failed as well but here is the Info Summary for it http://paste.ubuntu.com/5717818/
Is it possible to fix without using a Windows recovery disk? I just have to hunt around for one is all. Also it would be good to keep my files but it's not absolutely necessary.

EDIT: Is it worth giving the MBR recovery a go through Boot-Repair? It does say it could make things worse though...

Also here is the output of fdisk -l if it helps at all

[ubuntu] Brightness and startup setting problems

Hello,

I decided to migrate a few weeks ago and even though I have some stability issues, which is something I did't have before, I am glad I had done that step forward.
I will appreciate a lot your help if you give me a hand with this:

- First of all I have a dim problem and the brightness of my screen is always at its maximum no matter what I do. Here I copy some output that my terminal gives me:

username@computersname-MacBook:~$ ls /sys/class/backlight
apple_backlight
username@computersname-MacBook:~$ lsmod | grep video
uvcvideo 72249 0
videobuf2_core 32212 1 uvcvideo
videodev 100265 2 uvcvideo,videobuf2_core
videobuf2_vmalloc 12757 1 uvcvideo
videobuf2_memops 13213 1 videobuf2_vmalloc
username@computersname-MacBook:~$ cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.5.0-27-generic root=UUID=5f59014a-f5f9-4946-986d-652003df4751 ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7
username@computersname-MacBook:~$ sudo nano ect/default/grub
the file does not exist

- Second, When I startup my laptop either my bluetooth as my wireless are turned on automaticly. If I turn them off before I restart the computer they show on once restarted and I have no idea why.

Thank you for your help in advance.!!! I truly appreciate it.

[kubuntu] Linux-Installation on Samsung HE753LJ (HDD)

$

Dear Mates,

Untill Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.11 I was able to install the OS on my Samsung HE753LJ just simple without tricks.

Afterwars I have to uninstall the "dmraid" & "libdmraid" packages from USB-Stick in order to achieve the goal/let Ubuntu recognize the HDD.

But now with 13.04: if I uninstall the dmraid, the installation stuck by reading the HDD's (even by hours of waiting). if I dont uninstall the dmraid the instaaltion-routine go ahead but I cannot see the /dev/sde6.

I recognize that "gparted"-usb and other older Linux-Versions still recognize my HDD.

Do anyone know what/how can I do to change that?
What can I do that every Linux (new & old) reconize my drive?

Thanks in advance and best regards, Arny

[all variants] GBDK compiler installation?

Installing GBDK Compiler?

Hello, I have been trying to install the GBDK compiler that compiles C code for the original gameboy. How ever I have been having troubles trying to install the compiler itself. I have tried going uncompressing the file and going into it's directory and running the "make" and "make install" command as it instructs on their website. I'm not to familier with compilers that are you have to use with terminal commands. So I think that I'm either trying to install wrong I just don't know how to use it properly. If you know anything on this topic any help would be much appreciated.

(I am using linux mint, if any more information is needed I could post it)

[xubuntu] I can't get a recent version to install and boot twice.

Basically, due to various installer issues, I've been stuck on Karmic since it's release. I've never gotten a clean install of anything newer to function correctly, so I was too afraid to update my working, but really showing it's age, Karmic install. I have a dual boot with Precise, but after the first reboot, I was unable to use the login manager. I can log into a shell, but attempts to invoke graphics from it fail. Last night, I tried to do an install of Quantal over it, but it was a miserable failure. With all the other post-Karmic versions, I at least made it to the interactive part of the installer. This one displayed an error message warning of a GPU lockup, then alternated between errors about being unable to idle threads (it may have been cores, etc; I can check for sure when I get home) 2 and 3. Every few cycles of this, a garbled screen would display for about 5 seconds. Based on the blue, black, and white displayed, I can tell it was meant to be the first interactive page of the installer. It was the exact same each time it appeared. Each time one of the errors displayed, a number at the beggining of the line would increment up. I decided to just let it run and see what happens, and after at least an hour or two, it finally stopped it's seizure and only displayed the same garbled screen. Any help in getting Quantal installed, or Precise to behave long enough to try and update would be much appreciated. When I get home in about 4 hours, I can provide exact text of error messages, or more information if needed. The machine in question is the one in my signiture.

Hi,

I got a grub problem while installing ubuntu 12.04.

At first, win xp ran on my pc and it has drivers of C/D/E. Then I free driver C and install ubuntu 12.04 on it by setting up swap area and root /. The installation goes well until almost the last step which prompts error "executing update-grub failed". After restarting the system, it goes to the black screen with:

Error: ELF header smaller than expected
grub rescue>

I followed this instruction https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

After clicking the "Recommended repair" button, I got the message "Please close all your package managers (Software Center, Update Manager, Synaptic, ...). Then try again. But I'm not running any package managers!

Here is the Boot Reapir link:

[ubuntu] Issue compiling custom kernel

Hello,

I recently screwed up my FreeBSD server by deleting the /etc/defaults/ directory and now I am trying to recompile my Ubuntu kernel (on my laptop) with UFS write support so that I can retransfer the /etc/defaults/ directory files back onto my FreeBSD box via a USB flash drive. To recompile my kernel with this support turned on I've been following http://ghantoos.org/2009/04/04/mount...e-under-linux/ but have run into an issue.

After I tell it to compile with make-kpkg it rolls along for a while until it hits the following error -
Quote:

make[3]: *** No rule to make target `firmware/bnx2x/bnx2x-e1-7.8.2.0.fw', needed by `__fw_modbuild'. Stop.
I found one thread documenting this issue at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2115317&page=2 but since I didn't pull the source from git, I can't simply do the git update that they suggest.

Definitely would appreciate anyone who could point me in the right direction on this as right now my home file/media server is completely out of commission.

Thanks in advance!

Processor: Intel (R) Atom (TM) CPU z2760 @ 1.8GHz
Total Memory: 2GB
Bios Version: F.07
Bios Vendor: Insyde

I am trying to install any Distro of linux that will work. I would like to get linux on in order to get full use of the hardware. Win8 has a tendency to slow down a lot after a few hours of use sue to not closing programs but instead moving them to the background.

I have tried installing Ubuntu 12 and Fedora18 both of which claim EFI support. out of the two Ubunut was hte only one to even get close with showing a dual boot screen. however when i select Ubuntu to try and finish the installation (using a efi boot image from USB) it reverts to the windows boot manager and fails to load.
if i try to boot directly from the usb or cd neither are recognized in the advanced boot options.
I was only able to get the Ubuntu dual boot to show by installing the Help me boot option from the usb prior to rebooting.

I have been tryng everything i can think of over the last 3 days and am at a brick wall here.

Secure boot has been disabled and enabled on multiple attempts with no change.

I suppose my questions is this, has anyone been able to get a Distro to work on this model of laptop/tablet hybrid? if so how, any ideas on how to get this to work would be greatly appreciated.

if you need anything from me just ask. I will be on here for a while.

[ubuntu] Failed Boot - (amd-microcode - sudo apt-get update fail) - Extremely Baffled

$

I am completely stumped.

I attempt to boot into Ubuntu 12.10, I type my code to unlock the disk, and then Ubuntu fails to load. It is just stuck on the Ubuntu Logo.
I did CTRL + Alt + F1 and I saw that it had failed to load amd-ucode/microcode_amd.bin.

I have the following AMD hardware:
AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor ADX640WFGMBOX

HIS H677FN1GD Radeon HD 6770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity

So I googled around and found several "solutions" to this issue. However, the most reoccurring solution was to go into recovery and then root and type:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install amd64-microcode

But when I type in apt-get update I get this and several others:

W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/di...ty/Release.gpg Could not resolve 'security.ubuntu.com'

I googled this too but failed to find a solution.

Am I going about this wrong?
Can someone walk me through this? I am pretty confused.

[ubuntu] Cannot install virtualbox 4.2.12 after removing 4.1.12

First I would like to thank any/all for their input on this. I have been at this for hours!

I have Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 and was trying to upgrade virtualbox 4.1.12 to 4.2.12 package: ("virtualbox-4.2_4.2.12-84980~Ubuntu~precise_amd64.deb") I removed 4.1.12 with Ubuntu software center. Then tried to install 4.2.12. got "Error: Conflicts with the installed package 'virtualbox-guest-additions-iso'" then tried removing with synaptic. got two more packages removed. Tried installing again. Same error. Searched from root filesystem for anything including "*virtual*". Found 7 more items. tracked the down and "rm"d them all. search now returns nothing including "*virtual*". Retry installation of 4.2.12 with software center and gdebi. Both return with "Error: Conflicts with the installed package 'virtualbox-guest-additions-iso'" I have sought out every piece of 4.1.12 that I can find and wiped it out.

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I am a beginner so please explain in plain english. I am trying to install ubuntu 12.10 from a bootable usb. I already have windows 7 installed on my hard drive. The partitioning is as the pic above. When i click install it gives the following error :

The partition /dev/sda5 assigned to / starts at an offset of 2048 bytes from the minimum alignment for this disk, which may lead to very poor performance.

i have read over the forums about this error but i dont understand what they are trying to say. One of them said to try the following command : sudo fdisk -lu

the result are as follows :

Hello ,

I installed Ubuntu 13.04 using 'Universal Usb Installer' on my windows8 laptop in C:/ drive. Every time I restart my computer, and even when I try to boot from BIOs, it just takes me to my Ubuntu login. I have assigned the Cd drive as primary boot device, and it still wont boot, even when I manually try to boot from CD, it just takes me to the Ubuntu login.
And it showed 'Missing Operating System' after i clicked on something in Gparted Partition Editor by mistake.
I tried to repair using windows8 disk but it didnt load . I installed both windows and ubuntu in same drive and it is not accessible now . when i click on the drive it shows ;

[ubuntu] error: unknown command 'drivemap'. error: invalid EFI file path

Hi all!

My girlfriend purchased an Asus UX31a Zenbook with Windows 7 preinstalled. I talked her into trying Ubuntu 12.04 but now I cannot boot from the recovery partition anymore (Windows 7 recovery). Whenever I try to start from the Windows partition I get the following error "error: unknown command 'drivemap'. error: invalid EFI file path". I tried several solutions suggested on the Web but nothing worked (including trying to repair grub).

My only goal is to boot from the recovery partition to have Windows 7 installed again (I don't intend to use Ubuntu and Windows 7). Has anybody an idea how to do that? I can mount the recovery partition, if this is of any help? Can I just copy the entire recovery partition on an external harddrive and then boot from it?

Thank you for your help!

[ubuntu] Gigabyte motherboard & Ubuntu 12.04.2 32/64 bit

$

I've done this post as a result of reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI. Just a note on my experiences with a Gigabyte motherboard (GA-H61M-S2PC 2.0 with 8GB memory) and installing Ubuntu 12.04.2. The UEFI BIOS does not appear to have parameters for Quickboot/FastBoot or Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) or Secure Boot. Do these parameters have other aliases?

I intended to only have Ubuntu on the PC's hard disk. What are the advantages of UEFI when that is the case?

I installed 12.04.2 64 bit from a USB stick created by Startup Disk Creator. But it did not pick up (lsusb did not show it) my Logitech Webcam properly for use in Skype, set up Virtual Magnifying Glass properly, and Wine has to have a 32 bit prefix setup with /etc/environment modified appropriately.

So I tried to install 12.0.4.2 32 bit from a USB stick (created by using Startup Disk Creator). However, BIOS would not let me as it said that it does not have a bootloader: interestingly the BIOS shows that it is a UEFI device. This seems to contradict the article http://web.dodds.net/~vorlon/wiki/blog/SecureBoot_in_Ubuntu_12.10/ which states "And as part of our committment to enabling new hardware on the current LTS release, we will be backporting this work for inclusion in 12.04.2." (though does that mean that it will be done sometime after the release of 12.04.2 in February 2013?). I was able to install 12.04.2 32 bit from a DVD, presumably because the BIOS did not show it as UEFI. [ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo "EFI boot on HDD" || echo "Legacy boot on HDD" (from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI) shows that the HDD is Legacy boot.
