Install packages from liveusb to installed disk

Hello, I installed lubuntu 17.04 with encrypted lvm and it seems to have a bug. lack of lvm2 package is causing me to be unable to boot after installation.

Is there a way to install the lvm2 package to my installed disk from the liveusb? The volume is encrypted so I'm not sure if I'd be able to mount the encrypted volume and chroot in? Sorry for my noobiness. Any help is appreciated. Would it be easier to try and install an older version of lubuntu with encrypted lvm and then upgrade?

Hi all, I have a HP slimline that I got from a friend and want to know which version of ubuntu would be best to run on it. I'd like to play some games (SWTOR/Paladins) and install Kodi. I have used ubuntu before but haven't in over a year. Any info would be appreciated.

apt-get broken: Bus error (core dumped)

apt-get has broken for me. I tried to re-install it from a .deb, without any luck. The text below is what I see when running `apt-get update`. Before trying to install from .deb I saw the 'Bus error' message when running as normal user and sudo, instead of different errors. I'm hoping I can fix this without having to re-install Kubuntu, because the setup afterwards would be my whole day, but that's my next step if no one here knows what to do.

Code:

prompt:~$ apt-get update
W: chmod 0700 of directory /var/lib/apt/lists/partial failed - SetupAPTPartialDirectory (1: Operation not permitted)
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock directory /var/lib/apt/lists/
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?
prompt:~$ sudo !!
sudo apt-get update
Bus error (core dumped)

Thanks in advance.

I am running into issues when I attempt to install ubuntu via live usb onto my Gigabyte P15FV5-NE1 laptop. It looks to be related to bluetooth but I am not knowledgeable enough to know where to go from there. I have attempted to install on multiple usb drives, using both rufus and etcher. This same issue comes up when I try installing lubuntu and elementary as well. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

[ubuntu] Ubuntu installation on Acer Swift 3

$

Hi there!
I am not new using Ubuntu but I am new working with laptops.

Recently, I've installed Ubuntu on my new Acer Swift 3, with the following conclusions and concerns:
  • Even I've read a lot of post that somehow the laptop is not compatible with Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS, so far so good. I only updated the BIOS to the latest version (1.05).
  • It came with Windows 10 and I made an installation without delete Win10, but two concern came up:
    1. Somehow the grub menu works fine with Ubuntu, but when I enter to Windows, it reboots the laptop and go directly to Windows, Is this something that can be fixed?
    2. Do you know if warranty is lost if I make a full installation of Ubuntu?

  • Following the point that in Internet, the laptop is being shown as non-compatible with Ubuntu. Does somebody know if there are still compatibility issues?

I would really appreciate your response, and sorry for my bad english!

Thanks,
Nicolás.

[lubuntu] Stuck in Grub rescue

I am quite a newbie to Linux. My laptop is Lenovo G560. Lubuntu was installed from live USB by choosing "Erase everything and install...".
A few days ago I used Boot Repair to fix some problems, but it hasn't finished: after the step of removing Grub files, I made my laptop hibernate and intended to continue later (I didn't know that would cause serious damage).

And now, after it woke up from hibernate, despite pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del many times, only Grub-rescue shows up, I cannot follow popular solutions from the Internet to locate Grub files because they are completely removed and not replaced. I also can't even enter BIOS settings and Boot options to boot from a Live USB (from my little knowledge,I think because of hibernating).

This is what I got:

Code:

error: file 'boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found.
Entering rescue mode...
grub rescue> ls (hd0,1)
(hd0,1): Filesystem is ext2.
grub rescue> setprefix=(hd0,1)/boot/grub
grub rescue> set root=(hd01,1)
grub rescue> insmod normal
error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found.

I tried to power off, unpluged power suppliers, then pressed and holded the power button, then turned it on again but no boot options at all, just the Lenovo splash screen as you can see in the photo.

I asked this on Askubuntu, but I didn't receive any reponse.

Please give me some advices, thank you all!

[ubuntu] installed ubuntu 16.04.3, now can't boot ubuntu 17.04

Hi, I had a 17.04/windows 10 dual boot working nicely.
I removed the 17.04 / windows 10 drives, installed 16.04.3 on a third drive, all went fine - 16.04.3 installed ran etc. well.
I then reconnected the 17.04 and win 10 drives.
Now I can boot into 16.04 and windows 10 but not 17.04.
I can see the 17.04 drive in 16.04 and windows 10, so i don't think there's a flakey connection or any hardware related problem like that.
When I attempt to boot into 17.04 (selecting the boot record of that drive from the uefi), I boot into windows.
If I disconnect the 16.04 drive and attempt to boot into 17.04 I get stuck at a blank screen with a blinking cursor.
1. Any advice?
2. When I get a chance, I'll attempt to copy the files off the 17.04 drive from within 16.04. Rather than resuscitate 17.04, I would then like to install a new copy of 16.04 onto that drive, leaving the existing / new 16.04 in place. How do I do that?
I would really like all three systems (win 10 + 2* ubuntu 16.04), booting independently (each off it's own distinct drive).
Thanks for any help.

[ubuntu] Change boot partition size during install

$

Hi,

I need to install Ubuntu 16.04 on many computers and need to change the /boot partition size to be 4GBs (from the default 512MB) on all of them. The computers have to use EFI and LVM (for the /swap and / partitions).

Ubuntu installs and works fine with the defaults (but /boot is only 512MB!).

I am trying to use partman-auto/expert_recipe with the below string, but it does not work as I get an error at the end of the installation process saying:
the 'grub-efi-amd64-signed' package failed to install into /target/. Without the GRUB boot loader, the installed system will not boot.

This is the recipe I am using:

Code:

d-i partman-auto/expert_recipe string boot-root ::            \
      1 1 1 free                              \
        $bios_boot{ }                        \
        method{ biosgrub } .                \
      256 256 256 fat32                      \
        $primary{ } $lvmignore{ }            \
        method{ efi } format{ } .            \
      4096 4096 4096 ext3                    \
        $primary{ } $bootable{ }            \
        method{ format } format{ }          \
        use_filesystem{ } filesystem{ ext3 } \
        mountpoint{ /boot } .                \
      40000 430000 -1 ext4                    \
        $lvmok{ }                            \
        method{ format } format{ }          \
        use_filesystem{ } filesystem{ ext4 } \
        mountpoint{ / } .                    \
      16384 16384 16384 linux-swap            \
        $lvmok{ }                            \
        method{ swap } format{ } .

What can be causing this?

Or maybe there is an easier way to resize the /boot partition without a recipe?

Thanks!

"Best" partition scheme on 2 SSD and 1 HDD?

Hello,

i would like to install Ubuntu on 2 SSD an 1 HDD (128GB SSD, 1TB SSD, 1TB HDD) and I'm trying to figure out the "best" partitioning scheme for that.

Based on my knowledge I would put the big SSD on /, HDD on /home and small SSD swap.

Thanks for your advice.

[SOLVED] Autostart TeamViewer and reduce to tray icon with Kdocker

$

If you see this thread I created back in 2014, I solved the "TeamViewer autostart docked" problem using Kdocker. However, recently this stopped working as it should. TeamViewer would start but would stay onscreen instead of being docked. I can't say since when but every *ubuntu install I have done for a while, TeamViewer has continued to autostart but has NOT been docked like it was before, and some users find it disconcerting to have this app always show in the centre of their screen on startup. I finally found the solution which was, as often is the case, dead simple.

I'll recap from the beginning so new users won't have to switch between posts:

  1. Install TeamViewer (I have a deb file for TeamViewer8 on my USB key)
  2. In your file manager, go to /usr/share/applications and Rt-click > Copy on Teamviewer
  3. In your file manager, go to ~/.config/autostart (create the folder if it doesn't exist) and inside this, Rt-click > Paste, putting the TeamViewer icon in the autostart folder
  4. Now open:
(Xubuntu) Settings manager > System > Session & Startup > Application Autostart
(Lubuntu) Preferences > Default Apps > Autostart
and, if it isn't already, tick the TeamViewer entry
  5. Install Kdocker
    Code:

    sudo apt-get install kdocker
  6. Now open
(Xubuntu) Settings manager > System > Session & Startup > Application Autostart
(Lubuntu) Preferences > Default Apps > Autostart
  7. Add the following custom StartUp command:
    Code:

    kdocker -n TeamViewer -i /opt/teamviewer8/tv_bin/desktop/teamviewer.png -d 40 /usr/bin/teamviewer &
  8. Close and restart the PC to verify it's working:

That's all there is to it. The "error" was that in my previous installs I always had
Code:

kdocker -n Teamviewer -i /opt/teamview...
and not
Code:

kdocker -n TeamViewer -i /opt/teamview...
I spotted, using wmctrl -l, that the window is called TeamViewer and not Teamviewer as previously. Maybe it changed because of an updated TeamViewer install file I use (TeamViewer 8), who knows, but anyway, the V of TeamViewer changed to uppercase and whereas this is usually immaterial in Windows, in Linux case is king.

Kdocker key
-n = Name of window
(this was where I saw the error once I ran wmctrl)
-i = the icon file to use
-d = an nn second limit after which Kdocker will give up of it can't find a matching window

[ubuntu] Boot Device Not Found message while installing Ubuntu 16.04 via USB

I am a complete noob and have spent the last 6 hours searching a way to fix what I have done!

- I installed 16.04 using USB using this tutorial https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutoria...untu-desktop#5
- I did everything exactly how it explains it here; including step 6 "Allocate drive space", where I clicked on the "Erase disk and install Ubuntu".
- Everything seemed to install correctly until after I restarted the computer; step 12. I was never given a prompt to remove the USB so when it restarted the computer booted from the USB prompting me to try ubuntu, install, etc. So I restarted the computer again but this time removed the USB and now I'm getting a blue rectangular box that says:

Boot Device Not Found
Please install and operating system on your hard disk.
Hard Disk - (3FO)
F2 - System Diagnostics
For more information, please visit:

The computer a HP 19 if this helps at all. This is pushing my patience to the point of using this piece of junk computer for target practice and just go buy my mom a new one!

TIA for any help

Removing W8 and installing 16.04 Acer E1-522 easy.....SOLVED

$

I was asked to put Linux on a laptop so I looked at it and wondered how to go about this task...... Now I know that installing Ubuntu 16.04.1 64 bit installs on top of Windows 7 is straightforward. Just set the bios to boot from the DVD drive as first Boot choice, so I wondered how easy it would be.

The DVD drive would on open ... so I used a small paper clip to supply a thin bit of stiff wire to activate the DVD draw to opening mechanism ( a very small hole on the unseside curve of the DVD tray..then I put any old bootable disc in.. and powered it up.

This confused what passes for Bios to dispay itself, enough for me to be able to select the 'Boot' section and to change the first Boot option to be the DVD Drive. and to save that as a permanent option.. i replaced that with a installation DVD for Ubuntu 16.04.1 and rebboted the Laptop and Lo... to my mild surprise it had yielded without much of a fight ! I managed to install the OS across the entire Disc so Goodbye to W8 !!!

One tip is that part of the first stage is that it asks you to read some notes... I did not do that.... I think it would ask to Maintain Bios rather that the latest Eula? Master Boot Record wihich W10 likes so much). [Eula ? allows 3TG and above partitions so it does have advantages but Acer E1-522 owners may not have a pressing need for that... The Spec of tthis laptop is:-

Manufacture date was 2013 e.g 4 years old.

3.3GB Ram
Disk free space 488.5Gb
Orginal OS Windows 8.

Nicely built The user Manual goes to about 94 pages but doesn't seem to match up well with the Laptop. F2 was supposed to bring the Bios up but It didn't.... It has a Fn key but not sure how to use that.. it didn't do anything for me. )

My conclusion was that its a low cost way of getting a useable laptop for a modest price and ridding the planet of another Windows installation..

If you must have a Windows box W7 master discs cost £1.78 on Ebay in the form:- " Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit Re-Install Restore Repair Boot Disc Recovery DVD " A key is about the same.

If anyone has a problem with installing 16.04 on one of these laptops, please post herre and/or send me a message.

Ubuntu 16.04LTS cannot shutdown smoothly in a dual boot

Hi,

My new Dell XPS 8900 PC cannot install Ubuntu 16.04 at first for its video card issue. After using procedures below link, it is successfully installed along with Windows 10.

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread....=Dell+XPS+8900

At the last step of Ubuntu installation, it asks for restart. When I enter it, it has an error, saying something: ACPI Error: [\_SB_.PCIO.XHC_.RHUB.HS11] Namespace lookup failure.
AE_NOT_FOUND (20160930/dswload-210)

http://tinypic.com/r/28unx4g/9
......

I force it shutdown by press the PC power button. When restart PC, if I select Ubuntu at GRUB, it can load, and shutdown normally. The problem is if I select Windows 10, it thinks the hard drive has some problems to check it. After it repairs the supposed problems on System Partition, Ubuntu cannot shutdown normally. It continuously prints some printk message saying pcieport ...

http://tinypic.com/r/xfawyr/9

That is, Windows 10's voluntarily reparation changes something on the system partition.

Could you help me on correct the problem?

Thanks,

Ubuntu 16.04 Server - preseed - Partitioning: Use entire disk

Hello everyone.

I am trying to create a semi-unattended Ubuntu 16.04 Server installation. It all works well up to the point of partitioning.
My goal for partitioning is:

  • Skip the menu where user selects Guided (with all the different types) and Manual. Instead, I would like to always have 'Guided - use entire disk'
  • Show the user all disks, so he can choose which one to use
  • Automatically create all the partitions on that disk, with a help of a recipe available in the preseed

Currently, I have the following inside my preseed file, with regards to partitioning:

Code:

# In addition, you'll need to specify the method to use.
# The presently available methods are:
# - regular: use the usual partition types for your architecture
# - lvm:    use LVM to partition the disk
# - crypto:  use LVM within an encrypted partition
d-i partman-auto/method string regular

d-i partman-auto/init_automatically_partition select Guided - use entire disk

# If one of the disks that are going to be automatically partitioned
# contains an old LVM configuration, the user will normally receive a
# warning. This can be preseeded away...
d-i partman-lvm/device_remove_lvm boolean true
# The same applies to pre-existing software RAID array:
d-i partman-md/device_remove_md boolean true
# And the same goes for the confirmation to write the lvm partitions.
d-i partman-lvm/confirm boolean true

# You can choose one of the three predefined partitioning recipes:
# - atomic: all files in one partition
# - home:  separate /home partition
# - multi:  separate /home, /usr, /var, and /tmp partitions
d-i partman-auto/choose_recipe select atomic

d-i partman-auto/expert_recipe string            \
        1 1 1 free                                \
            $bios_boot{ }                        \

d-i partman/confirm_nooverwrite boolean true
#d-i partman-md/confirm_nooverwrite boolean false
#d-i partman-lvm/confirm_nooverwrite boolean false

However, with this configuration, I am not given the choice which disk to use (I guess the first disk is always used). Also, only the FREE space of the disk is used, not the entire disk.

Does anyone have a clue what I am doing wrong? Thanks a lot in advance.

Cheers,
Konstantin

[lubuntu] new install freezes when rebooting after first update

$

I am trying to resurrect a Dell mini-1012 net book (useless running windows).
I have loaded Lubuntu 17.04 & the live CD worked flawlessly except for the lack of WIFI drivers. & so did the installed version. All went well until I decided to check for updates. There was a huge backlog of updates > 50 MB. which I installed. Only to find that the computer would not boot after that. It was hanging as soon as it tried to load Lubunu.
A new core core version came with the update so I tried booting with the old core version... & it still hung. Next I reinstalled lubuntu 17.04 & only loaded the security updates & a few others that looked necessary. Once more the updates killed the machine.
Investigating further I found it was throwing up three error messages about the lack of firmware for the Wireless adapter but figured that should not have caused the hang. Next step was to try and boot with "nomodeset" in grub. Now able to see the startup splash I found the hang took place immediately after the message "Listening on Load/Save RF Kill Switch Status /dev/rfkill/watch. Starting Load/Save RFKill Switch Status". I then disabled WiFi & Bluetooth in the Bios. The boot process now went 3 lines further & ended with "Created slice system-systemd\x2 backlight slice Starting Load/Save Backlight..es of leds:dell::kbd_backlight..." at this stage I decided to drop back to the 16.04.2 LTS version as a safer option.
It was the wrong move as nothing changed .... Live DVD excellent Freshly installed version also Excellent. after updating black screen of death same place same errors. #-o

I've given it my best shot.. has any one any ideas please?
Lubuntu runs like a charm unupdated & I would like to keep it, and while there are other light distros out there The family is used to LDXE from the fleet of raspberry pi's around the house so lubuntu is a very good fit.

[all variants] app-mirror for segregated network

Hi everyone. I am working through a tough one that I need some help with. I have correctly set up all my ubuntu related repos to mirror to my local, internet connected system. I rsync the mirror repos to a second, USB drive and 'sneakernet' that second drive to a repo server on a segregated, no internet, internal network. These ubuntu repos work fine. I've added the repo for webmin. This works fine too. It has a key that is downloaded and then added to each server to allow the webmin repo to be trusted. Ok, all is good to this point.

I've added the stable cinnamon repo to the internet connected server and I am mirroring the content. Problem is that this uses:

Code:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:embrosyn/cinnamon
This imports the key to the server while connected to the internet. I'm not real familiar with the 'apt' system, so how do I get this new, mirrored repo accepted by the internal servers? Copying the /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/* does not work. I have a few different repos I'd like to add for our internal network.

Thanks

[ubuntu] bios settings to install ubuntu

$

hello,
I am asking this question here because i am hoping to find someone who has had a similar problem, or who knows how to solve it, because it may also be an ubuntu issue.

I use ubuntu since 8 years already so I am not new anymore, but computer's bios change strangely, and get difficult and insane I think. i recently buyed a new computer to replace my old one, ant it's an Asus N552VW. It came with windows 10 in it, but i make no use of it, and wanted to install ubuntu. at the first try it freezed out constantly as i tried to start ubuntu from usb stick to install it. I then found out that the bios settings must be modified, because of UEFI stuff ecc. my bios settings are posted in the pictures, that show all 5 the bios's settings:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1sO...ffqqlJakQ34o0A

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1cO...9LQrjw9WT00qPA

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1G3...tH6-qd9gg3FB8g

https://drive.google.com/open?id=13O...ATT0JSs0PMLuTQ

https://drive.google.com/open?id=180...fFIPR9bAAPOb1g

with these settings, that should be correct as i have read on many other pages, i should be able to start ubuntu and install it. but this doesnt happen, or, better, it does not happen the most of the times. 3 times it worked and I managed to install ubuntu, removing windows, and the rest of the times the computer got stucked on a screen like this one:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ue...vpL5YJ2IZX08-w

no matter how much time i left it there, it would not move. this happened both with ubuntu and ubuntu mate, and this is the problem i get told to happen when the bios settings are wrong, but i have changed them! anyway, 4 times, just 4 times out of at least 50 tries i have maked, ubuntu started and I installed it. 1 time i managed to install ubuntu mate 17.04 . it worked for one boot time, during which i installed some applications and (i think, I am not sure) i installed updates. then, trying to reboot, after i inserted my password, it would freeze. I tried again, and installed ubuntu 17.04. this time i am sure, I installed applications and updates, and then after reboot it freezes as ubuntu mate 17.04 after i insert my password. ubuntu 17.04 also had the problem, that when i clicked "turn off", it freezed without turning off, so i had to force it with the power botton. last time i installed ubuntu 16.04, and this OS does not even start. i see grub, select ubuntu, and then i get an error message as it is starting, telling:
" /dev/sda1 has unsupported feature(s): metadata_csum
e2fsck: get a newer version of e2fsck
fsck exited with satus code 8
[ 9.502245] tpm_crb MSFT0101:00: can't request regionn for resource [mem 0xfed40080-0xfwd40fff]"

the result of all this is that i can't use my new computer, not still. I am trying to start it from usb stick in order to install again ubuntu 17.04, but it is not starting. i've also just seen a post telling that ubuntu freezes after installing updates and rebooting: this should mean that there is an issue with ubuntu itself, but after it is installed. if anyone knows what to do to get my computer working, i'd like it very much, thanks
