[ubuntu] Upgrade hangs during search for obsolete software

$

My computer asked me if I wanted to upgrade to 16.04, and I clicked yes.
The upgrade stalled in the "Cleaning up" step.
It says "Searching for obsolete software" and the terminal text displays this:

...
173 new root certificates were added to your trust store.
Import process completed.
Done
done.

The window greys out for a few seconds, then becomes active again for a few seconds, over and over again.

Need Help Recovering from Crash during Updgrade (14.04 --> 15.10)

I recently decided to upgrade my system after not doing so for some time. I had been running Ubuntu 14.04 and attempted to upgrade to Ubuntu 15.10. I left my computer running the upgrade during the day and it appears to have powered off at some point during the upgrade. The system is now unable to properly boot. I tried the "Attempt to repair your current installation" option from this thread (http://askubuntu.com/questions/24913...-during-update) but the command dpkg-reconfigure -a but it appears "-a" isn't an option and a series of other commands was offered. The computer only runs Ubuntu and doesn't have any separate partitions.

I'm usually good about backing up my files but I've unfortunately uploaded a lot of photos recently without doing so. Any support to find a solution where I save the files that are on the computer would be greatly appreciated!

I've been using Ubuntu for some time but my knowledge level is pretty low, so the more detail and specific commands to enter into GRUB or terminal you can provide, the better.

[ubuntu] Grub Error post install of Ubuntu 16.04

Hello,

I recently decided to install Ubuntu, after playing around with Knoppix. At first I simply wanted to use a Linux distro on a bootable usb, though that changed after I downloaded the Ubuntu iso.

So, right now, I'm stuck on Ubuntu Live from the usb where I downloaded the ISO. Upon starting my PC, I have to hit F12 in order to bring up the boot screen. Selecting the usual hard drive partition which has Windows 7 installed, no longer works. I'm prompted with a Grub Rescue terminal. The only way I can successful boot my PC, is by running Ubuntu off of my usb.

Initially, after selecting to install Ubuntu, I decided to click the option "Install alongside Windows 7" in the installer menu. Things seemed to have been installed fine and, I didn't have any issues. Until I tried to reboot my PC. Following the advice of several Google results, I used Boot-Info to generate this report.

In the report, a few things will be evident, I have two usb drives plugged in. One with the Ubuntu 16.04 ISO on it (Which I'm currently booted into), and another with Knoppix. The internal hard drive, labelled sda1(?) is my Windows 7 installation.

Ideally, I'd like things to be resolved so that I can dual boot, and eventually eliminate my Windows 7 installation once I'm more comfortable with Ubuntu. At this point it should be evident that I'm not an experienced Linux user. Though, I do own a ageing Mac book, so I am familiar with terminal some what. This whole not being able to boot my PC without having this USB drive plugged in is rather an inconvenience, lol. So if you can help, I'd be very appreciative.

-- Additional Comment --
Upon reviewing several Google results, I found a user that mentioned something about Grub dumping files onto the USB device rather than into the appropriate boot folder on the new Ubuntu installation. After reviewing the USB drive and, Windows 7 installation. It appears to me that maybe this is what has happened in my situation. As under the Windows 7 installation, I have a folders at the following path: Windows/Boot/; such as DVD, EFI, Fonts and, PCAT. Which doesn't seem typical, though I've never been into the path on Windows 7 to notice anything different. On the Ubuntu installation, I only have the following files in this path: /boot/grub; gfxblacklist.txt, grubenv, unicode.pf2. I tried copying the files previously mentioned into the latter path, but ran into some permissions issues so I couldn't test it on my own. These files may also be in the Windows 7 path due to Boot-Info repair tool, as I think I did select to add Grub to that partition :/

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 16.04 won't shut off USB when shut down

$

I just installed Ubuntu 16.01.1 on a Asus Z170A MB system.

The USB card reader doesn't shut off when the system shuts down. The USB floppy continually seeks when the system is on, but does shut off when the system shuts down.

These all work fine on Windows 10 on the same machine (started from a separate, hard switched, hard drive).

The Asus MB has a strange BIOS, not sure if it's UEFI, BIOS, or hybrid. The instructions from Ubuntu when loading were unclear. I selected to enable third party drivers.

How can I fix this?

Thanks!

Installation of Kernel 4.5 or 4.6 with automatic upgrades

$

Since upgrading to 16.04, I have had a lot of issues with my system hanging when putting it to sleep. I've been doing some research on this, and the most common and relevant root cause of this that I have found is that kernel 4.4 has some known issues with power management and upgrading to 4.5 or 4.6 fixes this. I'd like to install a stable version of one of these kernels on my system to see if it will work for me.

The issue that I'm hitting is I'd like to be able to add an apt repository to my system which contains one of these kernels so that if any new security updates come out for them, I don't have to manually track that and upgrade them. However, I've had no luck finding a ppa for this, which seems odd to me since I can find a ppa for most any package I can think of that I want the latest version of and the Kernel should be the most prolific package out there. In my research, everyone seems to suggest downloading the .deb packages from kernel.ubuntu.com and installing them, which I'd like to avoid for reasons stated earlier. I did find the canotical-kernel-team ppa, but that doesn't seem to be recommended for stable builds and appears to be updated on a more regular basis than what I'd prefer. Any other suggestions I can try?

[SOLVED] upgrade 14.04 to 16.04, X won't start (not a graphics issue?)

Hello everybody,
I installed xubuntu 14.04 on a friend's laptop a year back.
a couple of weeks ago, she agreed to upgrade to 16.04, and after that all she got was a black screen when booting.

i have the machine here now.
the system is upgraded, it is 16.04.1 LTS now, but the graphical session won't start.

Or, to be more precise, it looks like it starts ok, but stays completely black.

Can't use Updater due to automatic kernel upgrade

Hello!

I've got Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop ed. w/ kernel ver. 3.16 About a month ago I allowed the system to upgrade the kernel to ver. 4.xx, but after that I couldn't boot my system, so I re-installed everything from Clonezilla image and now I have again 3.16 It's all nice, but everyday I see this annoying upgrade proposal and what's even worse is that I think that I can't install any Ubuntu updates, since I get this kernel upgrade box and when I close it, then there's no update at all. You can take a look at those two print screens I've added.

UPDATE:
I downloaded and installed Synaptic, so I can manually update installed packages.

Help me get Ubuntu working

Hey, Thanks for reading this post. Basically, I've got a Windows 10 OS as my primary OS, but I'm trying to learn about programming/ coding and everyone has recommended I use Ubuntu to get good with Linux. My problem is that I can't seem to get Ubuntu to run at all. I've partitioned my Hard Drive with more than enough space for another OS, I've downloaded Ubuntu 16.04 onto a DVD, I've changed my System Settings to boot from the disk, and I have tried to run Ubuntu without installing as well as tried to just install it. Every time it'll whir for a bit, make a bit of progress, and then the progress dots stop filling up. I get no sort of error report, and I've had the system run diagnostics on itself and it says it's fully functional, so there's no way the files are corrupted or anything like that. Can anyone help?
I forgot my system Specs!
Processor: Intel(r) Core (TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @2.60 GHz
RAM: 16 GB

Hope this helps!

GUDEV missing during install of ModemManager

$

I am running Ubuntu 16.04.1 64bit LTS. I'd like to use my mobile phone to connect to the internet so I am trying to install ModemManager-1.6.2

If I run ---
./configure --prefix=/usr
--sysconfdir=/etc
--localstatedir=/var
--enable-more-warnings=no
--with-suspend-resume=system
--disable-static && make

then I receive this error message ----
checking for GUDEV... no
configure: error: Package requirements (gudev-1.0 >= 147) were not met:

No package 'gudev-1.0' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables GUDEV_CFLAGS
and GUDEV_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.

I cannot find any way to install gudev-1.0. I don't know what it is. I don't know what these other 2 suggestions mean or how to execute them.

1) Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix.

2) Alternatively, you may set the environment variables GUDEV_CFLAGS and GUDEV_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.

Any help with how to rectify this error regarding missing GUDEV would be
greatly appreciated.

I've tried boot-repair and everything.

Sorry guys, total Linux newbie

Virtual Machine Upgrade of 14.04 to 16.04 fails

I have multiple 14.04 VM's that I have been running since 14.04 came out they are all up to date to 14.04.5 but I would like to upgrade them to 16.04.1. I have tried several times and with 2 different VM hosts with no luck. It always gets stuck at asking permission to restart services without asking. It overlays a root@server# and does not continue the upgrade. after performing a reboot I get a long list of broken packages and the OS after that point is completely worthless. Luckily I keep backups of all my VHD's so it is an easy restore but I really don't want to rebuild all of my VM's from scratch so I can be on 16.04. I have tried running them in both VMWare workstation 12 pro and Virtualbox.

Unfortunately the way things are going I may have to rebuild everything anyway because I am trying to switch over to ESXi and it does not like VMWare Workstation pro at all. No compatibility between its own products? What is going on VMWare? Since when did you become Microsoft?

At any rate, any insight would be appreciated.

Remove Hackintosh partitions using Kubuntu 16.04 USB?

Hello everyone! I need some help here. (This may be in the wrong place, but if it is, please, mods, move it.)

I have a Hackintosh laptop (Lenovo Z50-70), and I want to remove all the HFS+ partitions on the hard drive to install Kubuntu.

I'm not sure how I should. GParted shows all my partitions (including HFS+) and allows me to remove them, but I'm not sure if it is safe to.

[SOLVED] 15.10 - Software Updater says up to date, but my software is old

Hello all, here are my basics:
$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 15.10
Release: 15.10
Codename: wily

I start Software Updater and it says "The software on this computer is up to date" and I'm reminded that 16.04 is available.
However I haven't been prompted for an update in weeks, my Flash player is out of date, I have a feeling updates are out there and my system isn't getting them.

My download server group was custom but I changed that to 'Server from United States', rechecked for updates but there are none. My Software and Updates configuration look reasonable but I'm happy to post those if it helps.
Also have plenty of free disk space.
Tried an apt update and apt-list upgradable, I there's a few updates about Nautilus but I'd expect far more updates.

Thanks for reading and for any help with this.

Hello!

I use Ubuntu 14.04.1 Desktop and in PhpMy Admin I see this:

Database client version: libmysql - 5.5.50

But when I do this in the terminal:

mysql -V

I get ver. 5.5.52

Also in Synaptic Package Manager, when I go to "Databases", I see both mysql server and mysqlclient are 5.5.52
And in "Libraries" I see libmysqlclient18 also 5.5.52

Ubuntu 16.04, Dell Inspiron 5000, AMD e Intel GPU

hello,

this is my first interaction in the forum, so I apologize for any misunderstanding.

I have a problem since the release of Ubuntu 04.16 to use the GPU dedicated mue laptop.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5000 with a GPU integrated Intel and other dedicated AMD. I'm already aware that you can not use the proprietary drivers from AMD, and it would take using the opensource driver. None of this is a problem.

I just can not check my AMD card, much less have an idea of how would the Intel GPU switching to AMD and also its opposite.

I wonder if the community could help me ill with content that could be used for someone who is learning Linux Ubuntu.
