[ubuntu] Boot stuck at loading initial ramdisk

[ubuntu] Filesystem messed up because of Apple's Mac OS X Disk Utility

I'm a happy Ubuntu user (Elementary OS 0.2 Luna).
I installed Luna on my Macbook 5,1 (late 2008). Everything works perfectly, even better than Mac OS X, but here is my problem:
- I used Utility Disk on the Mac partition, and it converted the Ubuntu's partition from ext4 to FAT32.
- The data are still there, but when I try to boot from Ubuntu it returns an 'unknown filesystem' error.
- I managed to boot from the grub rescue command line, and everything is working correctly.
- I booted from an USB stick
- How can I convert the filesystem back to EXT4 without losing data?
I can backup the whole thing and recreate the partition, but I'd prefer not to do it if possible.

Thank you!
Carlo

Here is my fdisk -l

[ubuntu] Filesystem with encryption, snapshots and caching on SSD

I'm about to install Ubuntu on a computer with one HDD and one SSD, and I would like to know if it's possible to achieve all three goals below simultaneously.

0. Encryption (should I use disk-level or filesystem-level?)
1. Snapshots (for making backup copies of with rdiff-backup; suggestions of better backup solutions are welcome)
2. Enjoy the speed of the SSD without manually choosing which files goes on which drive. I'm thinking of the following possibilities:
2.0 Store everything on the HDD and have the OS use the SSD as a cache. (Perhaps reading from and writing to both drives simultaneously for speed.)
2.1 Use both the HDD and the SSD as a single, big drive, and have the OS shuffle things around so that the most used stuff resides on the SSD. (Again, perhaps reading from and writing to both drives simultaneously for speed.)

What filesystem can do this for me?

[ubuntu] Booting problem after fresh installation - can't detect monitor resolution (I think)

My laptop is an Acer TravelMate 2312LM_L and I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

First of all, I tried installing 12.04 via the regular installation CD but whenever the CD loaded, the black screen with the stickman and the credit card(?...lol) at the bottom appeared, disappeared, and then the screen would flash various shades of black ad infinitum before I ever got to the installation menu.

The Alternate installation CD, however, worked perfectly. The installation menu appeared and I was able to install 12.04 without a hitch.

After successfully installing 12.04 I removed the Alternate installation disk, rebooted, and now the same problems have resurfaced, only this time, the screen goes black straight after the BIOS screen, stays black, and then starts flashing different shades of black ad infinitum again.

What should I try first to solve this problem? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to have a portable install of Ubuntu on a USB stick, where I can just plug the stick into any computer and reboot?

[SOLVED] Odd crash during install

I was installing Ubuntu on this system(http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/2QkYS), and it crashed after waking up the screen after being away from keyboard for a short ammount of time. I waited a while and it didn't fix itself.

The install is running Ubuntu 13.10 and crashed on the Ubuntu One login window and no extra error was given. I powered off the computer and when rebooted the computer showed the crashed window again. Boot doesn't load the bios and I've removed the installation media (USB drive) to try and fix the problem.

I've also tried unplugging the machine fully and leaving it but that made no difference.omputer and turned it on and the error was still there. What else can I try?

After a normal software update this morning my computer freezes after about 2 minutes of use. No pattern, any program I use either freezes or crashes. No major program updates or kernal updates, just minor programs. How can isolate which one is causing me problems and uninstall or reinstall previous?

yes, an odd one. I installed 13.4 (after running 12.4) and when prompted by Software Updater to update I said sure. After reboot I login fine but when I launch Terminal, FireFox, LibreOffice, Thunderbird - I cannot type - no delete key, no backspace no Return/Enter, nothing - except for one exception - the Password field on a brewer page works!

Also, the Keyboard Layout Chart works fine as does Xterm. After ctl-alt-F1 I can also type at the prompt just fine.

I don't see anything odd in Xorg.0.log or lighted.log. Any ideas? Thanks, -don

<add> One possible hint, I tried logging in as "Guest" and everything worked. I them moved my .gnome2* .bash* .compiz* fontconfig to a directory and logged out. When I logged in no difference... </add>

Trouble booting after new install

Hello,

New to Linux here,

I originally downloaded a copy of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and used the pendrive application to create a bootable USB.

Installed 12.04 without any trouble and when it asked to reboot the machine i pulled the USB drive and booted.

The system attempt to boot ubuntu but quickly flips back to a text UI repeating several lines about "First FIS Failed, gave up waiting for Root Device" it would wait for a few minutes then repeat the process.

I did a little reading and went into the bios and changed the device settings for the hard drives to ahci and this did not help either.

Downloaded the 13.10 and reinstalled to see if there was a difference if i had the ahci on before the install. When i got to the screen in the install UI with the map and the time zones, a window popped up asking me about GBT Table. There were 2 choices in this window, neither were clickable, the window was drag able so i moved it out of the way and carried on with the install. As i got to the next screen set of options the GBT Table warning was gone. Install finished and asked me to reboot. Same issue as first insall.

I grabbed a copy of fedora dropped it on usb drive installed and same issue there as well.

I have reinstalled windows on my machine but i would really like to know what im doing wrong or if i try again what information i need to better help resolve this.

Im getting the impression its a setting on my motherboard or a hardware issue.

Thanks in advance,

Loren

Hi,

I can not install ubuntu on my notebook:

I made a pendrive usb installation media using the Universal USB Installer and ubuntu-10.13-desktop-amd64.iso apparently the usb is ok but ...

I'm trying to install ubuntu 13.10 on Samsung Ativ Book 6 NP670Z5EXD2BR notebook but he freezes and dont show debug data on ubuntu pendrive boot

I have similar problems with other distros like Kubuntu.

If i add nomodeset or xforcevga option on grub he aparently starts but stays with black screen

With the fedora 20 he starts but does not detect the video card.

Notebook specifications:

Intel® Core™ i7 3635QM (2.40 GHz up to 3.40 GHz, 6 MB L3 Cache)
Memory: 8GB
HD: 1 TB S-ATA II

Ubuntu 13.10 boots to a blank screen no controls

I recently updated to ubuntu 13.10 from 12.10 (second time I've ever updated) but when it was done and restarted, the computer boots, passes the buntu splash and goes into a black screen that has absolutely nothing, and no keyboard commands will work.

I have assumed it was fault of unity because my NVIDIA GeForce fx 5200 can't run Unity 3D which I discovered after updating from 12.04 to 12.10. At that time however I was still able to use the keyboard to log out and/or access terminal then change to gnome fallback. Using my assumption I tried to edit the GDE and LightDM to either stop the auto login process or use gnome fallback by default.

Alas, it didn't work and still boots to a black screen.

I've searched far and wide and see nothing that seems to be helpfull to my situation, not that I can easily interpret anyways ie. Step by step help. I don't even know which DM the system is trying to use.

My only available usage of the system is the group as it won't boot to recovery either.

Anyone who can walk me though personally I'd gladly appreciate it.

[ubuntu] Live USB won't boot in UEFI unless "only-ubiquity". Once installed, still won't boot.

In UEFI mode, booting from a live USB memory and choosing "Try Ubuntu without installing" leads to a halt with a black screen (with and without "nomodeset").

Choosing instead "Install Ubuntu" (i.e., the "only-ubiquity" option) and "nomodeset", the installer launches and seems to work fine. However, booting into the installed version leads to a black screen again.

I have tried "Intel(R) Rapid Start Technology" enabled as well as disabled.

So, How do I boot Ubuntu in UEFI mode?

I had a brain fart while installing Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS (64 bit) and typed the wrong name for the initial user during install. How do I change it without re-installing? I managed to set up dual boot Win 8.1 and Ubuntu and don't want to try the OEM install again.

I have read about dpkg-reconfigure but I am unfamiliar with the syntax.

Trouble installing Ubuntu alongside Windows 8

Hello,
I have trouble installing Ubuntu 12.04 LTS ony my laptop ( Asus k55vm - http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrab...specifications ). I already have windows 8 and i want to install Ubuntu alongside it.(hopefully without deleting any files).I've read a lot of topics on the subject, but couldn't make it work.
Things i've tried:
- I turned off the Fast Startup on windows;
- I have 3 disks, so i shrink (E: and now i have 97,66GB Unallocated - thats the place i made for linux.(disk manager screen: http://i.imgur.com/nJXx8UR.jpg )
- Checked the Secure Boot(http://i.imgur.com/skulZg4.jpg);
- When i try to install Ubuntu, it doesn't recognize that i have an operation system(http://i.imgur.com/323QVPf.jpg) (i found a lot of topics about that, so i guess it is normal not to detect windows 8), so i continue clicking "Something Else", but then it doesn't recognize the disks as they are in windows, it simply show me one partition(http://i.imgur.com/qcDNyT9.jpg).( i was hoping to show me the unallocated space, so i could install it there)
btw i noticed a little error shows just for a second right before it loads the ubuntu cd.(http://i.imgur.com/MCTzJwh.jpg) (not sure if it is important)
Additional information:
Gparted
sudo parted -l(i wasnt sure yes/no)
sudo fdisk -l

If there is any information you need, just say it.
Thank you.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 13.10 freezes after large (>1 gb) file transfers to usb stick

$

Hello everybody,
i know this problem has been discussed already, but i couldn't find any satisfactory solution for my situation.
As the title says my Saucy regularly freezes AFTER having copied large files to (any) usb stick. The operation completes succesfully, no corrupted files, but the system stucks and i have to choke it (Dell inspiron 5521, Ubuntu 13.10).
/var/log/syslog gives no useful info.

If i do it via nautilus it just freezes at the end of the process, so i tried to cp and rsync the file via terminal (ctrl-alt-f1),
and what i noticed is:
-after the copy the terminal is fully operative in both cases, but when i switch back to graphic interface with ctrl-alt-f7 it stucks there -> choke.
-rsync log file seems corrupted (a bunch of \00s in the middle of the file)
-after 50% the transfer speed drops from ~50MB/s to ~5MB/s, this is not my primary issue but could be related (?).

I tried adding "pci=acpi" to my grub boot options like http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1867460 suggested, but no difference

what could i do to find the source of the problem, and maybe solve it?
Sorry for my english, thanks in advance for your help, i usually manage to solve my linux issues reading older threads, but this time...
