[ubuntu] Synaptic will only open if I 'gksudo synaptic' from terminal

$

I recently got stuck in the lightdm login loop following an inplace update from 12.04 to 12.04.4.
I almost resolved that from a shell by:
Code:

sudo chown user:user .Xauthority
That got me logged in with an empty desktop.
Resolved that from a shell by:
Code:

sudo chown user:user .ICEauthority
So now my desktop looks good, but I cannot open Synaptic unless I:
Code:

gksudo synaptic
from a terminal window.
I also noticed if I open System Settings > User Accounts, I am unable to unlock my account or add another for testing.
I have spent hours researching this, but am truely stumped.
Thanks in advance for any help,
AC

[ubuntu] moving from one computer to another

Hp is giving me a new notebook computer to replace the lemon I now have. The old one has win 7 (64) and the new one will have win 8.1.1. This may have been addressed in this forum but I couldn't find it. Anyway, I want to move the Ubuntu 12.04 install to the win 8.1 new computer. What I thought I would do is using Acronis (which works with linux) make a backup of the 2 linux partitions (main and swap) and install them on the new computer. I suppose I may need to setup the partitions, with G-Parted, on the new computer before I do the transfer. After the transfer is complete I suppose I will have to run "Boot repair" to get the dual boot working. I'm a beginner with Linux, but learning fast, it has been a good stimulus for my elderly brain. Is my thinking correct for this project or am I all wet?

[ubuntu] Ubuntu 14.04... the daily build... Easy to upgrade to LTS?

Hi. I will be getting a new computer soon (sans an OS) and thought about loading the latest build of 14.04 on it to use as my sole OS. I understand it may be a bit unstable, and I think I can deal with that (as I doubt it'll be that bad), but wondered if I start with the daily build of 14.04 now, will upgrading to the LTS release in April be easier/cleaner than going from 13.10 to 14.04 LTS? Does this make sense? I've only ever had the LTS releases of Ubuntu, and would just like to start out with that, but can't wait until April for the final build. Thanks to all that read this.

Help repairing a RAID array

I had a drive go out on my RAID array when I restarted the computer after an update. It was working fine before the update, so I figured that maybe the update messed with something, odds are the drive itself didn't fail right at that time it was restarted. so I checked the array.
I ran:

I thought the drive itself should be ok and I decided to zero the superblock of the failed drive from the array and add it back to the array. As I was typing the command to do so, I checked the result of cat /proc/mdstat and thought that it was sda1 that had failed, so I typed:

sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sda1

sudo mdadm --add /dev/md0 /dev/sda1

I got the response:

mdadm: /dev/md0 has failed so using --add cannot work and might destroy
mdadm: data on /dev/sda1. You should stop the array and re-assemble it.

Looking closer, it looks like it was sdb1 that failed, not sda1, so it appears I have zeroed the wrong superblock. I then tried to assemble the array with:

sudo mdadm --assemble /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1

and got the response:

mdadm: no recogniseable superblock on /dev/sda1
mdadm: /dev/sda1 has no superblock - assembly aborted

Now I don't know what to try next, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

[other] Libreoffice - appearance of "Save" dialogue box

Hello,

I have just wiped and re-installed Libreoffice on my computer (Linux Mint 16). It woks fine, but the user interface now looks different. The icons on the toolbars are different, the menus appear simpler (more flat and grey) and the ‘Save’ and ‘Open’ dialog boxes are less easy on the eye. Here’s a screenshot:

I can’t explain how they are different because I can’t remember, in detail, how they looked before. However I remember the Dialog box (in the picture) had shortcuts on the left that were the same as those in Nautilus(/Caja) and it was a bit larger and easier to use with a pull-down list of file extensions at the bottom. The icons on the toolbar were colour and larger and I seem to remember the menus as having a bit more eye-candy.
I have had a long look through the options and can’t see what has changed.
I don’t think I am dreaming things. What am I doing wrong? How do I get the ‘prettier’ appearance back?
Thanks,
Oli.

Help with network config ubuntu 13.10

Good afternoon, this is my first post here so please bare with me. Please also note I am a dreaded 15 year Windows user who has just installed first Linux based system so if anything doesn't make sense I apologise.

So here goes. I have just installed Ubuntu server version 13.10. I do not currently have a GUI so everything is being done in command line. I do however want a gui - but will come to that later.

It would appear that I currently do not have any network access. (I have set this up using a virtual machine on VMWare). I am trying to use a static ip configuration.

Running route -n gives the following:

Kernel IP Routing table
destination gateway genmask
0.0.0.0 172.16.12.1 0.0.0.0
172.16.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.0.0

I cannot ping opendns servers.

I can run an ifconfig -a if it would help at all?

Can anyone help this lost newbie? The end result is I want to get out of command line and use a GUI.

Hi,

This bug is already reported and resolved too in other versions of Ubuntu, but I am facing this issue in release 1:3.2.8-11ubuntu6.3 !

The procps service fails to start whenever I try to install or upgrade.

The command I am using is: sudo apt-get upgrade
Which results in tonnes of errors snippet is as follows:
Code:

Hi,

I am trying to install lubuntu in a ten year amilo laptop using ubuntu minimal iso from a cd. The only possibility is to install Precise Pangolin (12.04) 32 bit non PAE, as the computer doesn't support PAE. (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lu...MinimalInstall)

Everything goes ok until I have to choose the archive mirror for downloading the base system from. I select my own country, Spain, and doesn't download anything at all, the computer freezes... Same with other servers.

Any idea of how can i fix this issue?

Thanks,

jorge

Installation of Ubuntu 13.10 on Samsung NP535U - Win 8.1 not detected

$

Hello everyone,
I have tried installing Ubuntu 13.10 on my new laptop Samsung NP535U at 64bit with AMD processor and Windows 8.1 as OS.
Since there is no CD/DVD reader, I tried the installation via USB.

In the BIOS boot settings, I see the following options:
- UEFI: General USB Flash Disk 1.0 (which I set as first)
- Windows Boot Manager (which I set as second)
- UEFI: ST500LT012-9WS142 (it appears twice, I disabled both)

Here is the screenshot I did with my phone: http://share.pho.to/4nQOw

Then I click on "Install Ubuntu", but the next page appearing says "The computer currently has no detected operating systems."
This is of course wrong, as I have WIN 8.1.. But it seems Ubuntu does not see it...

here the other screenshot: http://share.pho.to/4nQNE

I really do not understand why WIN is not detected..Could some of you help me solve this problem ?

Gnome fallback Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

After a serious mishap I needed to reinstall the O/S on a new Hard Drive, so I took the opportunity of downloading the latest offering and installed that. I am an old luddite and much prefer the old Gnome and so I also down loaded gnome-session-fallback, as I did a couple of years ago when 12.04 first emerged.
My problem is that I can not get the old classic look back. The usual familiar log in "cluster" half way up the left side of the screen does not appear, and the wretched machine seems hell bent on keeping me on what we luddites see as the garish mess that is now the new Ubuntu.
Any advice would be more that welcome.

I am not sure how to fix this.
Can I just remove the packages mentioned above? Ubuntu-desktop!
I don't know what state my machine is in, I am sort of scared about rebooting.
What happens when your upgrade fails midway? Can i start again??

[lubuntu] Mount issue after rebuilding system

My BlacX external storage disk (BigMeow) is no longer accessible after I rebuilt the system.(Ubuntu 13.10). I get permission errors.

The internal disk is working just fine.

/dev/sdb1 on /media/meow/BigMeow type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,default_permissions,b lksize=4096)

/dev/sdb1 on /media/meow/BigMeow type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,default_permissions,b lksize=4096)

Nautilus crashes (a lot) and I have moved to PCmanFM as my file manger. My attempts to reinstall Nautilus have not stopped Nautilus from crashing.

How can I mount the external drive?
Any thoughts on how to get Nautilus working again?

Chers,

MW

[xubuntu] Upgrade: No net, no keyboard, no mouse. Broken kernel?

Hi,

I have an xubuntu 13.10 system. I did sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade awhile back, and now the system is broken. I'm just now getting to it to fix it.

For one thing, since I dist-upgraded from 13.04 the useless but prettified boot screen is there, so I can't see boot failures. It just goes to the ubuntu splash screen with a bunch of dots on the screen, and then goes to a login screen as though nothing were wrong.

I can boot from a CD and everything works fine, I have network and keyboard and mouse. It's not broken hardware, although a raid array isn't coming up. I think the CD I'm booting from doesn't have raid drivers. I'm booting from a system rescue cd from probably more than a year back. I choose 'boot existing linux' and it boots to my xubuntu, but with a different kernel I think. I'm getting slow network access, but it's at least network access. I can't use X but I can get to a terminal.

This reminds me of a broken kernel, but I don't recall a kernel coming in. I also don't see much grief about it on the forum, so I guess I'm at a bit of a loss.

This is a virtual machine host, so I don't want to just wipe it.

Since I have it up, I'm trying to update it again in hopes that fixes it. If not I think I'll try to uninstall the kernel and install it again.

Does anyone have input as to the best approach?

Thanks.

Hey all, I'm have recently installed elementaryOS (based on Ubuntu 12.04) however matter what I try I always end up with the same empty grub prompt at boot regardless of which OS I choose to boot into with my BIOS. (My other OS is windows 8)

ive tried boot-repair countless times but never seem to make any progress. I'll provide the link it gave me for my latest attempt:

any help at all would be very much appreciated!
