Hello,

need some assistens installing Ubuntu Server.

Stating the USB driver with F7: UEFI: USB-Drive after that im getting:
error: file '/boot/' not found.
error: can't find command 'grub_platform'.

In GRUB Menu i choose install Ubuntu server, but it stuck on a massage: EFI stub: Loaded initrd from LINUX_EFI_INITRD_MEDIA_GUID device path
I see the USB-Drive blink 3 times and my System frezzes.

Tried with some Bootparameters: acpi=off, noapic, nolapic, pci=nomsi, i915.modeset=0
but all stuck at the same spot.

How to Debug the installation?

I can install Windows and boot it with no problems at all.

What should I do?

sudo cp /etc/ssl/certs/landscape_server.pem ~/server.pem

in ubuntu core

sudo landscape-client.config --account-name standalone --url https://ubuntu/message-system --ping-url http://ubuntu/ping --computer-title "node-0" --ssl-public-key ./server.pem

created usb installation media for Ubuntu 22.04 as described in https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/create-...ck-on-windows:
1. Rufus started "Run as Administrator"
2. Tried "Write in ISO image mode" and "Write in DD image mode"
3. 2 different usb drives used (16GB each)
4. Also used Etcher
5. ISO image verified using -
Code:

echo "45f873de9f8cb637345d6e66a583762730bbea30277ef7b32c9c3bd6700a32b2 *ubuntu-22.04.4-live-server-amd64.iso" | shasum -a 256 --check
But it shows some error with text "Grub" and something else for less then a second and menu is displayed. After I select "Try or install Ubuntu Server" black screen appears for some minutes and long list of errors is displayed, which ends with "Kernel panic - not syncing: No working init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

Restart loop after Ubuntu install on USB

My laptop has become unusable, please help.

I tried installing Ubuntu for the first time on a USB stick to run from any computer.

Here are the steps I took:

1. downloaded Ubuntu from web on Windows and transferred to USB1 using Rufus
2. boot into Ubuntu test from live USB1
3. checked that Windows EFI partition (separate SSD) was flagged as msftdata (the guide I followed stated it should be changed from EFI to mfstdata, but it was already this way)
4. ran install ubuntu to USB2 (clean drive, 332MB EFI partition and rest of 16GB Ext4, mount point ’/’
5. after successful install changed main OS EFI partition flag to EFI (I suspect this might be the issue, as it was msftdata when I started?)
6. restarted computer

This is the situation now:

- when USB2 with newly installed Ubuntu is inserted it boots(?) but gets stuck on the loading screen (Ubuntu logo), however I can enter Ubuntu recovery mode
- can’t access Ubuntu downloaded with Rufus on from USB1 (to that way see what might be wrong)
- cant boot into Windows 10 (OS on my SSD), removed the drive from the computer and all other issues persist. Does this mean my BIOS is damaged? Is there any way to fix that (laptop is Samsung NP530U3C)
- stuck in restart loop (can’t enter BIOS)

Done so far: unplugged the CMOS battery, but problems persists. Only way to exit restart loop seems to be using USB2. I tried replacing the esp&boot flags with msftdata with parted, but it was not possible (no idea why). When I run dmesg | grep ”EFI v” I get efi: EFI v2.3.1 by Phoenix Technologies Ltd., so I assume it boots in EFI/UEFI (atleast the Ubuntu).

Let me know if more information is needed. Unfortunately my knowledge is none when it comes to recovery.

Thank you for the help! Even if I can just get Windows back running I’m more than happy.

Previously, I installed version 22.04 successfully, but after learning about a new version, I uninstalled 22.04 and want to install 23.10. However, when I reached the 'try or install' stage, I ran into a screen glitch. Please help with a solution.

Can't install Ubuntu Desktop

Hi. At first sorry if this has been posted before but I couldn't find an answer on other posts.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS with dualboot with Windows 10, since I do want to start learning Linux, since I have zero background. I followed the tutorial on the web. However, multiple issues happened.

At first I couldn't even try Ubuntu, since a black screen with letters would appear.

Then I tried to procceed directly to Install in Safe Mode. However, when I reached the screen of Updates it got stuck there forever.

Therefore I did proceed without connecting to Internet and without checking any of the boxes and installing the minimum necessary. It seems to work (I had no issue with the disk partition part) but in the end gets stuck in "Almost finished copying files".

I've also tried flashing my USB (of 64GB) more than once with Balena Etcher and Rufus, none of them seem to work. I have also tried other distribution with similar issues.

I've been searching old posts to see if it happened before. The ones that I've seen neither understood what a solution could be or did not work for me.

I have a laptop ASUS with a i7-7700HQ and a Nvidia 950m.

Is there anything else I could do? Also the installation is stuck at "Almost finished copying files", can I abort it safely?

[server] Autoinstall cloud-init wount run Late-comandows

Using Ubuntu Server 22.04, I am attempting to create an auto-installation setup for a physical client. I want to enable root login and execute late commands. Additionally, I want the hostname to be set as "new-client-macadress" without colons. Despite trying various syntaxes, the commands do not seem to take effect. I have experimented with different configurations, but none have yielded the desired results.

Here is my cloud-init conf

#cloud-config
autoinstall:
version: 1
user-data:
hostname: new-client
timezone: Europe/Stockholm
chpasswd:
expire: false
list:
- root:$6$exDY1mhS4KUYCE/2$zmn9ToZwTKLhCw.b4/b.ZRTIZM30JZ4QrOQ2aOXJ8yk96xpcCof0kxKwuX1kqLG/ygbJ1f8wxED22bTL4F46P0
keyboard:
layout: se
toggle: null
variant: ''

late-commands:
- sed -i "s?new-client?new-client-$(cat /target/sys/class/net/enp*/address | sed 's/\://g')?g" /target/etc/hostname /etc/hosts"
- echo "PermitRootLogin yes" | tee -a /target/etc/ssh/sshd_config"
- systemctl restart ssh

Very grateful for any feedback

[kubuntu] Missing libgnutls30 when updating noble and crash

I tried to update my 24.04 kubuntu and crashed. I can reach a login screen but kubuntu-desktop is gone. My target is to recover the kubuntu-desktop and try to avoid complete reinstall of kubuntu. On recovery mode I tried to recover the desktop by 'apt update' and 'apt --fix-broken install' but there is an error message about missing libgnutls30. That missing package make http and other internet access fails. I try to download libgnutls30 at noble repos but none of them is available:

https://packages.ubuntu.com/noble/am...tls30/download

Please verify whether the missing package is normal or not.

Update: I realize some source is good for unload, for example from fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu. But I believe I did tried the france archive before I write this thread.

[ubuntu] Need help navigating UEFI setup for dual-boot install

Hi there everyone,

I haven't installed linux dual boot since UEFI was introduced but need to now and I'm having a problem figuring out what to do here.

The PC: Dell XPS 8930
Drives: Windows on NVME, Linux will go on newly installed SSD . I'd like to have the PC choose the SSD first by default unless chosen otherwise to boot into Windows.

Could someone tell me what I need to change here to get the boot scenario I'd like?

Here's the menu I'm presented with.

Ubuntu 22.04 booting too slow (27.88 seconds)

$

Hallo everyone,

My Ubuntu 22.04 is booting very slow, it takes around 28 seconds in total. It shouldn't be any hardware problem, because I consider my PC to be powerful. :-) Meaning, i5 12400 CPU, RX 6600XT GPU and 16 GB RAM.
Any chance to get it to start within seconds?
By the way, I started counting only from the GRUB menu. After Ubuntu being chosen, I started the the timer. If anybody wants, I could record it with my phone.

After the update on 22.04.4 there were delays. Most noticeable in the terminal. If you switch to wayland, there are no delays. But then the games don't work ;(
On 22.04.3 everything worked.

Ubuntu 22.04 install on Dell R710 with RAID-10

I'm experimenting with an extra Dell R710 that we have and I want to install Ubuntu with a RAID 10 config (PERC H700).

The RAID-10 is configured: 6 physical drives at 4 TB each.
Span 0 (Drive 0 and 1)
Span 1 (Drive 2 and 3)
Span 2 (Drive 4 and 5)

When I attempt to install Ubuntu from the USB drive, it just spins and spins on the Ubuntu logo screen. Is there a step that I missed, or will it take a while to come up with the setup options because of the number of drives?

I'm trying to unstall Edubuntu 23.10 for my kid on grandma's old computer. It has a Pentium dual core processor.
I'm able to run the install (overwrite harddrive with default partitions), but the BIOS is unable to boot.

Can anyone help me? Is it because this is not a 32bit os?

[kubuntu] Ubuntu and Kubuntu together, or just wipe clean and install Kubuntu?

$

I saw there is a System76 forum, but this area seems more appropriate.

I just purchased a new System76 Laptop (16" Pangolin) with 32GB Ram and 2TB SSD. I have a lot of data and eventually intend to add a 4TB SSD.

Their OS of choice is Pop_OS, a derivative of Ubuntu, but they will install Ubuntu on request, which I did. My intention is to add Kubuntu on top of the Ubuntu (22.04 LTS for now), as I had done with my desktop years ago (using Ubuntu server). I use KDE desktop but on occasion some Gnome apps.

So I thought that's what I was doing-adding Kubuntu to the existing Ubuntu from the USB flash drive. But it required me to choose: either install Kubuntu as the only OS, or share the Kubuntu with the Ubuntu installation, and it divvied up the SSD into two partitions, each about 1TB. I'm not happy with that - I'd rather have it all on one partition.

What I have on my desktop is the Kubuntu install on a 256GB 2.5" SSD (sda) and all data on a separate WD Black SATA drive (sdc). That seems to work well.

My plans also include setting up a VM for a Windows install for some Win programs I still need. I was never happy with WINE, so I went the VM route. But if I use one partition for the Kubuntu/Ubuntu OS, then I'll want a much larger (or expandable) VM configuration. When I set it up years ago, I set aside 4GB RAM and 40GB disk space, not really acceptable as I discovered.

So my question is, should I try to keep the two partitions on the OS drive (and why?), or if it might be better to just wipe the Ubuntu off and do a clean install of Kubuntu. If I really wanted Ubuntu, I could add it in the VM.

Also, if I choose to wipe the drive, how would I go about doing it (It's been only been one week, so there's really nothing on the box yet).

Thank you for any thoughts on all this.

Update 14.04 LTS (is it possible)

Hi,

I'm returning to Ubuntu after a long absence and trying to install on a 2002 white MacBook. The latest CD I can boot from is the 14.04 server CD. When I try to update or install using apt-get it can't find any of the repositories. Is this because they have now been taken off line, and is there a way round it?

Many Thanks for any advice,

Aggie

[kubuntu] stuck at grub. cant repair boot

Hello,
this is my first time installing a linux system. I wanted to use Kubuntu and also use LUKS Encryption.

I used this guide to install KUbuntu including LUKS Encryption:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Fu...ion_Howto_2019

It seemed like everything worked fine, but after the whole installation and rebooting the PC I get stuck at the grub screen.

I cant boot, because I cant initialize the kernel. I checked out many posts, which basically told me to do as this post
https://askubuntu.com/questions/8839...b-command-line

I tried the boot-repair using the live session on my usb stick, but all I got is this information: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/6J3YKDTdpN/

I tried to boot into all other boot options on my pc but it didnt work out, always the same results => GRUB

Can somebody help me out with this?

Thank you in forward!
