How reinstall Ubuntu 18.04 on single boot system and keep personal data

$

Hey there,

after messing around with the user permissions in /var/ and /etc/ and other undocumented things it happened to me that my computer does not boot into GUI. Several error messages and only be able to access via shell. I decided to create an Ubuntu USB stick and reinstall Ubuntu 18.04. Seems easier than debugging. Took me already 3 hours.

Unfortunately, I do not get the Reinstall Ubuntu option (described here). So now I have 4 options but I really want to keep my personal data I had before in the home directory (/dev/sda) and another hard drive I add as partition (/dev/sdb)

1. Erase Ubuntu 18.04.04 LTS and reinstall

2. Install Ubuntu 18.04.04 LTS alongside
18.04.04 LTS
3. Erase disk and install Ubuntu
4. Something else

You can create or resize partitions yourself, or choose multiple partitions for Ubuntu.

I think I could go for 2. and then manually copy the files from the home directory to the new home directory? Or for 4. and keep my partitions. I am not sure how to do that.

Before the options I get the following

The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions:
/dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc
Do you want the installer to try to unmount the partitions on these disks before continuing? If you leave them mounted, you will not be able to create, delete, or resize partitions on these disks, but you may be able to install to existing partitions there.

Maybe someone could help me or point me to a tutorial. Thank you!

[ubuntu] Migrate 19.10 non-encrypted LVM installation to new disk

I have a Ubuntu 19.10 installation that was upgraded from 19.04, which was installed to a PCI 3.0 NVMe SSD. The system was recently upgraded to a PCI 4.0 motherboard, so I would like to also upgrade to a PCI 4.0 NVMe SSD as well. I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to do this that wouldn't involve doing a complete re-install.

This SettingUpLVM-WithoutACleanInstall wiki page refers to Ubuntu 7.04, 8.04 (my first Ubuntu experience!!!), and 9.04. I can't tell if it's been updated in the past decade. I highly doubt it's still the same process today, but I suppose what I'm trying to do could be adapted to the "A new blank hard drive you've added to your system" use-case/requirement. It's just that I'm actually already on LVM, but the new drive doesn't care about that (does it?).

Here's my lvdisplay and pvdisplay output:

Code:

Upgrading Motherboard and CPU, anything to watch for?

My son and I are upgrading the motherboard and CPU, from an Intel Core 2 Quad to an i5-3570. The motherboard is going from a Dell lga 775 socket to a Dell lga 1155 socket in an own dell case.
we are changing nothing else. We are running with a GT730 gpu that has been in there since I put it together.
Any advice for us before we start seeing error messages?
thanks everyone!

Full System Encryption + non-bootable NVMe drive + bootable USB drive

Hi Everyone,

I have system that is unable to boot from NVMe drive and am trying to install 18.04 on the NVMe drive with full disk encryption using a USB drive to boot from following the Manual Full System Encryption guide at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ma...stemEncryption.

I created GPT partition tables on both drives, an EFI partition on the USB drive and a system partition on the NVMe drive and installed Ubuntu on this setup following the guide.

When the system boots the USB drive shows up as a UEFI boot source in the boot menu, grub loads then I get the following error message:

error: no such cryptodisk found
error: no such device: SOMEUID
error: no server is specified
error: you need to load the kernel first.

The grub ubuntu boot script consists of the following:

setparams: 'Ubuntu'

recordfail
load_video
gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode
insmod gzio
if [ x$grub_platform = xxen ]; then insmod xzio; insmod lzopio; fi
insmod part_gpt
insmod cryptodisk
insmod luks
insmod gcry_rijndael
insmod gcry_rijndael
insmod gcry_sha512
insmod lvm
insmod ext2
cryptomount -u SOMEUID
set root='lvmid/SOMEUIDPATH/SOMEOTHERUID'
if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint='lvmid/SOMEUIDPATH/SOMEOTHERUID'
else
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root SOMEUID

How can I diagnose this issue?

Kris

20.04: Why no option to create a non-encrypted physical volume during installation?

Hey,

I am new to Ubuntu after using SuSE/OpenSuSE for 20+ years and am kicking the tires in a VM to see if I want to make the switch.

Not sure what I am missing here, but why is there no option to create a non-encrypted physical volume during installation? How would I do that?

Thanks

[ubuntu] [solved] Cannot install Ubuntu 19.10 to HP Spectre x360 (2020)

Hello,

Today i bought a spectre x360 (2020 Edition) from HP. I Tried to install ubuntu.
The Livesystem worked after adding nvme_load=YES to the kernel.
I am also able to install it from the livesystem, However after it finished i tried to reboot my Laptop and... in the EFI Partition there is no ubuntu efi file.

The Strange thing is that if i boot from livesystem again, ubuntu can indeed see the files.
i solved this problem by copying that efi files from the livesystem to a usb stick, bootet up Windows and copied the File from the usb stick to the EFI Drives there.

Okay. First thing resolved. But there is another Problem: my Livesystem says that Partition 5 on the NVMe Drive ist ext4 (with the ubuntu installation).
However the grub bootloader in the EFI Partition cannot see that ext4 System and Windows says that the Space on the Disk is Empty and not used.

How can that be?

Some Specs about the Laptop:
HP Spectre x360 (2020 Edition) 13-aw0020ng
with Intel Optane 32GB
Disabled Secure Boot in UEFI-Bios

Many thanks for all replies in advance

No Device Destinations for Ubuntu 19.10 Install

Hi,

I am trying to install Ubuntu 19.10 on an HP Pavillion running Windows 10. I have created a 64 GB partition to house the installation. I used Rufus to create a bootable USB containing Ubuntu 19.1 and am able to boot the Ubuntu Installer. However, when it comes time to actually install Ubuntu, no locations are available on my PC and the installation freeze when I try to add a partition. I am connected to Wi-fi.

Here is the resulting screen with the download option I selected in case that is relevant:

Installing Lubuntu-18.04.4 on a troublesome old PC

PREAMBLE

The CloudReady web site records the fact that the
HP Compaq dc5800 pc with BIOS version 01.53 or
lower will not boot any OS running Linux kernels based
on v4.14 (or newer). To overcome this problem, the
BIOS should be updated to version 01.60.

(The software for checking BIOS details, dmidecode,
is pre-installed on Lubuntu-18.04.4)

The HP Customer Support centre no longer has
software upgrades for the dc5800)
************************************************** ********************
I was, until today, totally ignorant of all the above information:
I simply couldn't understand why my dc5800 would not boot
any linux with kernel newer than 4.13 (kernel panic every time)
while my dc5700, an even older, smaller machine, has had no
such problem. In my ignorance, I came up with the following
approach:

i) install Lubuntu-18.04,4 on my dc5700
ii) from https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.13.16,
download the 3 components making up the kernel 4.13.16 used
in Artful Aardvark 17.10 and Ubuntu 18.04 beta:
-linux-headers-4.13.16-041316*all.deb
-linux-headers-4.13.16-041316-generic*i386.deb
-linux-image-4.13.16-041316-generic*i386.deb

(in accessing this site, my Firefox browser required 2 steps:
-go to https://kernel.ubuntu.com; once there, append to the
address line ~kernel-ppa and hit enter, then follow the path
to reach the packages).
iii) install the 3 components with gdebi in the above order;
reboot and select the 4.13.16 kernel
iv) run sudo dpkg --remove the 8 packages listed below:
linux-headers-5.3.0-28
linux-headers-5.3.0-28-generic
linux-headers-generic-hwe-18.04
linux-generic-hwe-18.04
linux-modules-5.3.0-28-generic
linux-modules-extras-5.3.0-28-generic
linux-image-5.3.0-28-generic
linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04
v) reboot into the only kernel remaining, 4.13.16
vi) install additional software to individual requirements
vii) install and run systemback to produce a remastered .iso
which did install successfully on the dc5800 and runs well.
************************************************** ************************
This process might be useful if other recalcitrant old PC's are encountered.

Ubuntu 18.04 Invalid signature / Need to load the kernel first

I have an older ASUS machine that I installed Ubuntu onto, originally I installed Ubuntu 14.04 (was just the flashed USB that I happened to have), but went through all of the update process to upgrade to 16.04, then to 18.04. I feel like I did all of the upgrades via the Software Manager, but it's been a few months since I did and can't completely remember.
After that I did things like:

Quote:

sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean

When I restarted the computer I got a Kernel Boot Error

Quote:

error: /boot/vmlinuz-5.3.0-7629-generic has invalid signature
error: you need to load the kernel first
I’ve been doing some reading and think that disabling secure boot may fix this, but would appreciate any other insights / ideas.
Thank you in advance

[ubuntu] Cannot access windows even after using boot repair

$

Hello,
I used boot repair's 'Recommended Repair' within ubuntu to fix the grub and boot issue of Windows 10 OS on an Alienware 15 R2 (uses UEFI and GPT), which fixed only the grub.
Pastebin link generated by boot repair:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/McxnKhGHzJ/
Drives in the PC:
1) SSD (~240GB) >> Contains Windows and C: drive.
2) HDD (1TB) >> Contains 500GB D: drive for Windows files and the rest is divided into:
a) ~230GB for Ubuntu
b) ~230GB for my files etc.
c) 16GB swap space
d) 256MB EFI system partition

Post Ubuntu installation, the grub menu was not to be found and Ubuntu loaded directly on startup.
On restarting, I entered Windows via the boot menu (F12 key), which worked normally.
I came across this link to enable the grub menu.
I executed the following command (in the cmd as an admin):
Code:

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi
I observed that Ubuntu loaded directly on startup, despite the above step.
This time around Windows couldn't be accessed via the Boot menu (grub didn't work either) and gave this error:
Code:

The selected boot device failed. Press any key to restart.

I tried updating grub from within Ubuntu, changing UEFI to Legacy in system setup & disabling Secure Boot to no avail.
I used boot repair and the grub menu can be seen now, although whenever I click on any Windows option in the grub I either get this error:
IMG_20200405_223235.jpg
OR
I see the Windows Recovery Options as follows (which do not help that much):
windows10recoveryoptions.jpg
windows10recoveryadvoptions.jpg

I have also executed the following commands using the cmd (in advanced recovery options):
Code:

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi
bcdedit /deletevalue {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi

The first command returns success, but doesn't help gain access to Windows. The second command returns not found.
The grub menu is accessible after using boot repair (Windows entries don't work):

My HDD partitions (sudo fdisk -l):

Therefore, I would like to kindly request for urgent help regarding this matter as my work files are still in Windows.

[lubuntu] Window controls/adjustments gone after upgrading from Lubuntu 18.04 to 19.10

I just upgraded my system from Lubuntu 18.04 to 19.10 using apt dist-upgrade from the command line. I can boot up and almost everything works just like before (display, audio, input devices, wired and wireless network), EXCEPT that all of my windows are missing their close/resize buttons, and there is no window chrome to select in order to move or resize the windows.

I have noticed that if I switch to a Plasma desktop from the LightDM login screen, I do get all of these controls, but of course it's a completely different desktop environment. The default Lubuntu environment is the one with issues.

Any ideas what could be causing this?

Making bootable system partition image?

Hi guys,

Can any of you tell me how I can make an image of an entire Ubuntu Mate 18.04.4 system partition, so it can be restored to a freshly formatted partition (or disk) that I can then boot from?

I used to be able to do this with Drive Image, which booted from a DOS disk—but it doesn't support SATA drives, which I'm using now.

This being Linux, I figured there'd be all kinds of non-proprietary ways to do this, but I haven't found any yet. Thanks for your help!
