Cannot boot back into Windows 10

I installed Ubuntu over Windows 10 on a Dell XPS 13 laptop. Ubuntu works fine but lost the ability to boot back into Windows. I ran Ubuntu boot repair and it could still not boot into Windows. The boot repair generated a text report:

http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/Fr872MwYbz/

If anyone can interpret that for me I would be most grateful.

Ubuntu on GIGABYTE tablet

Hello all and thanks to the site creators.
My 1st post so, I’m from the US working in Abu Dhabi UAE on Military simulators that have anywhere from 50 to 80 servers, projectors and simulated Military equipment with windows XP and 7 I’m mostly dealing with hardware issues.
I’m a 1 year Ubuntu convert for my personal use and love it. I’ve loaded Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS on several old laptops with no issues and it increased the performance of the laptops, and Ubuntu MATE on 2 Pi4s also no problems but recently I tried loading Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS on an old GIGABYTE S1080 tablet with a Celeron N2087 1.58GHz 4gb ram and 64gb HD and it’s really slow so slow I put windows 10P back on.

Any advice on what might be the problem or should I take the path of least resistance and keep W10 on the tablets?
I thought my Ubuntu ISO might be corrupt so downloaded a fresh copy but no luck.
It's really really slow.

Corrected for version 18.04.4 LTS on the tablet

[SOLVED] ubiquity install wizard crashes; cannot install ubuntu-MATE 18.04.4

I've tried several times now to install Ubuntu-MATE version 1804.4 from a live USB.

Every time I hit "install," nothing happens. A circle spins for a few seconds, then stops.

I get an error message saying that ubiquity has crashed.

In the terminal I checked for ubiquity using:

Code:

dpkg -l ubuiquity
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ubiquity

and saw that the live USB already has the latest version of ubuquity, which is 18.04.14.14.

I have a System76 Wild Dog, 64-bit desktop workstation, 4-core Q9650 3GHz, 8 GB ram. It has a BIOS, not UEFI.

Graphics: PNY Nvidia GeForce GTS 450, driver v. 367.44.
OSs: Ubuntu-MATE 16.04 & 14.04. Drives: 2 960-GB Sandisk SSDs.

I want to install Ubuntu-MATE 18.04.4 onto one of the SSDs (A standalone 960-GB SSD in an enclosure, that I later want to move into the Desktop box and boot directly from.)

Here is some of the lengthy error message report:

ExecutablePath:
/usr/lib/ubiquity/bin/ubiquity

Package:
ubiquity 18.04.14.14

ProblemType:
Crash

Title:
ubiquity crashed with PermissionError in___init___(): [Errno 13]
Permission denied '/cdrom/.disk/info'

How can I get a functioning ubiquity in the live USB and get the install wizard to open so I can complete the installation?

Hi,
I'm using my 8 years old PC with windows XP and a recertified hard disk.
Now it happened that windows didn't start and I had to reinstall it. But I had first to delete some files with CRC errors. It looks it worked but to be safe I bought a new hard drive.

Now my problem: with my old hard drive I could start Ubuntu and saw the desktop but couldn't install it. I think it was trapped in a loop.

With my new drive only Ubuntu crashes my system and I never saw the desktop. A older version makes that worse.

If you are interested I could activate XP with my old drive but not with my new drive. Microsoft told me "no support"

Hi!

I'm trying Ubuntu 19.10 Live on my Dell Inspirion 5570. I am unable to connect to 5G WiFi network. However, with 2G everything is fine.
I have included journalctl output when trying to connect to 5G WiFi network. Can anyone suggest what to look for? Driver?

Thanks in advance!

Lubuntu 18.04 LTS dual boot/partition with Windows 7

My desktop is a 2009 HP business desktop 64 bit, which came with Windows 7 . I currently have Ubuntu 16.04 LTS installed in a partition. I want to remove it and install Lubuntu 18.04 LTS in a partition. 16.04 was installed after removal of 14.04 LTS, but I can't remember the procedure. I found the following documentation, which doesn't address removal of existing partitions before creating a new partition.

https://docs.lubuntu.net/lubuntu_installation

My initial solution tor removal of existing partitions was to use Windows and simply delete them, but 1) I can't tell which partition is Windows, and I don't want to delete it, and 2)it occurred to me that simple deletion might wreak havoc with my machine. Question 1: is the documentation above authoritative/factual? Question 2: what is the correct way to remove the Ubuntu partition(s), and leave Windows 7 intact before creating a partition and installing Lubuntu?

NVIDIA driver issue ... still unresolved

Hello,

In order to be able to work on TensorFlow (further TF) with GPU support, we should install the NVIDIA drivers.
In addition to the NVIDIA drivers, the operation of TF also requires the installation of CUDA and cuDNN.
For the correct functioning of all these tools it is necessary to pay attention to versions of each tool.
For example, according to this link, the latest version of TF (v. 2.1.0) works well with version 10.1 of CUDA:
https://www.tensorflow.org/install/source#gpu
On the other hand, according to another link, version 10.1 of CUDA requires version 418 of NVIDIA drivers:
https://docs.nvidia.com/deeplearning...dware-versions
So if I want to use the latest version of TF, I need to install these versions of the tools:
TF - 2.1.0
CUDA - 10.1
NVIDIA drivers - 418
Installing NVIDIA drivers should be the first step in the installation sequence for all of these tools.
And precisely, on this first step (i.e. installation of NVIDIA drivers) it gets stuck.
When I point to version 418 in "Additional Drivers", nothing happens. Then when I run nvidia-smi, it says that it is not possible to communicate with NVIDIA drivers:
Code:

pavel@ALABAMA:~$ nvidia-smi
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.

Also the "Settings/About" window says that I still have Intel UHD Graphics:

However when I point to the 440 version in "Additional Drivers", something runs for a few seconds. Then when I run nvidia-smi, output is different:
Code:

pavel@ALABAMA:~$ nvidia-smi
No devices were found

So, here my questions:
  1. why I can't install version 418 of NVIDIA drivers ... at least the same way as I did it for 440
  2. why despite installation of version 440, nvidia-smi says that No devices were found.

Thank you in advance ?
Pavel.

[ubuntu] No boot after SELinux install

Hello,
I have Ubuntu 18.04 running on an ASUS VivoBook with a NVIDIA GeForce MX150 video card.

I wanted to install SELinux and was told that for that I first had to uninstall apparmor which I did without problems. Then when I installed SELinux and rebooted, the system hung up (no boot after 15 minutes, just the little moving dots).

I could reboot in recovery mode and all worked fine except that I only have 800x600 pixels with no choice for screen resolution.

I tried all of the recovery options (reinitiating grub, fix broken packages, file system check, etc.) but no change, not able to boot normally.

I uninstalled SELinux without problems then ran apt-get autoremove, apt-get dist-upgrade, apt-get upgrade and apt-get update, and reinstalled libgl1-mesa-dri (which seems to have something to do with screen rendering) but still the same problem (system runs in recover mode with reduced screen resolution but won't boot normally).

The last lines of my "sudo apt install selinux" command (in French) were:

Traitement des actions différées (« triggers ») pour initramfs-tools (0.130ubuntu3.9) ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-42-generic
I: The initramfs will attempt to resume from /dev/sda6
I: (UUID=72f71923-ffe0-45b0-8ba8-cfda78b4d5b7)
I: Set the RESUME variable to override this.

The device name and UUID for the swap partition (I have a partition rather than a file) were good, but I saw that there was no "/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume" file so I added it according to https://askubuntu.com/questions/1116...e-these-issues , but still same problem.

I can't see whether this is a resume from swap problem, or a video package problem or something else.

Could someone please help? Thanks and best regards, John

B43legacy problem, are drivers not available in 2020?

Hi! Very new to Ubuntu, trying it to fix a bsod on an old laptop. Since I didn't know what I was doing, I tried several versions of Ubuntu...14LTE, 12, and finally 10.04.4 worked for me so I'm going with it (for now).
I have the well known issue of WiFi not working...needing B43legacy driver but the links on other posts are dead (they return a 404 message when I run the commands in the posts). I can't connect to the "b43" link (http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43) on any computer, it seems to not exist anymore? Should I be trying a different version of Ubuntu? Is there someone who has the b43 driver (and 'firmware - b43legacy installer')for 10.04.4?
I have an old Dell Inspiron 8600 Pentium M D800 1.7GHz with 40GB and 512MB RAM Broadcom BCM4306 (rev3) [14e4:4320} ; Ethernet works for the most part, I guess (but can't connect to 'broadcom . com' because of a 'ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap' error...which is a different issue?). I may also need to setup the wireless connection from scratch...nothing was ever set up on this laptop. I tried to use similar settings from another laptop but I'm not sure it's 100% correct.
Can anyone with experience help with this old b43 issue? I've read dozens of webpages, trying to learn about Ubuntu in general and also this b43 issue. I've tried following a few posts, the sudo-whatevers run, but my results show a lot of '404' responses...the websites seem to be dead? I'd like to 'play' with my new Ubuntu but I'd like a good internet connection so I'm not tethered by the Ethernet cable.
Thanks!
PaulG! -new to Ubuntu (Ubunt-noob? lol), I can follow directions but I can't read code (well...maybe a little BASIC.lol).

[ubuntu] Change mount /media/username to /home using fstab didn't work

Hi, I forgot to set my home partition to /home mount point during a clean reinstall so it automatically was mounted at /media/username.

Instead of starting over the reinstall, I defined the UUID in fstab, mounted, then changed /media/username to /home in fstab and mounted again. At first all the files disappeared from all the directories involved. After reboot, I have the default empty directories in /home and nothing under /media. Even the partial backup I made in a new folder (/media/home) disappeared.

I'd really appreciate an explanation of what might have happened. Please let me know any additional information I can post.

Thanks and be safe, everyone.

Hello,

I tried to install CUDA using instructions from this link:
https://developer.nvidia.com/cuda-10..._type=deblocal

The last instruction sudo apt-get -y install cudagets this:

pavel@ALABAMA:~/installers$ sudo apt-get -y install cuda
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package cuda

I addressed this problem to the NVIDIA forum, but based on my experience, a response can be expected in a few days.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion

[xubuntu] PHP mysqli broken after distro upgrade to Xubuntu 19-10

So far, certain (old and maintained) code worked fine. However... not any more. PHP says...
Quote:

"Call to undefined function mysqli_connect()"
I'm using nginx with supervisor to run a local PHP CGI service within a box for dev purposes (nowadays mostly HTML and Node.js).

According to php info, mysqli and mysqlnd are installed and operational.
Checked which php.ini file is loaded.

Output from package manager about installed PHP packages:
Code:

The only thing noticeble for myself are virtual packages of two PHP versions.

Any ideas how to solve this issue?

[ubuntu] Dual boot windows with Ubuntu Using UEFI, and NOT modifying the MBR

I have an MSI motherboard, that has UEFI, and I have windows 10 installed. I would like to install Ubuntu, or some flavor of linux, with out modding the MBR. I have done it before, though I do not remember how.

What I used to do before, was have it boot to the linux drive, and then I could select Windows, there was a timer, and it would automatically boot to linux. The motherboard has 4-5 sata ports. Does the linux drive need to be on the first sata port? Or does that matter with UEFI?

Grub installed and windows 10 will not boot

I moved two hard drives to a new motherboard. One drive already had Windows 10 installed. On the other blank drive, I installed ubuntu 18.04.4. Grub appears to have overwritten the windows 10 drive's boot area. The Grub menu appears no matter which drive I select with BIOS. Windows is a grub menu item but when selected windows goes into a repair/diagnostic loop. I have run boot-repair from a live ubuntu cd. No fix, just another windows menu item created in grub. Here is the URL from boot-info http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/5hGry9hb4D/

I have no means to reinstall windows 10.
I prefer to select the OS through the BIOS hard drive selection at startup, as I did with the previous motherboard..

After upgrade to Win10: System starts directly Windows10, no grub menu appears

Hi,

I have a dual boot PC (windows + ubuntu16.04).
The ubuntu16.04 was originally a ubuntu14.04 that I upgraded several months ago.
In January, I updated from windows 7 to windows 10.

Afterwards Ubuntu was not accessible any more, as no grub(2?) menu appeared.

I fiddled somehow around and now I am able to start windows 10.

Unfortunately, the grub(2?) menu still does not appear during startup of the PC.

Today I did some activities following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair

The latest log can be found here: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/6rm5n7wgKW/

What can I do to get grub(2?) again working so that I can have both Windows and Ubuntu?

Thanks in advance,

Tobiaz

PS: if it helps, this is the list of my today's (not very systematic) tries. Some tries lead to a bootable Windows 10 configuration, others not.
