$

Hi,
Laptop = Acer
Model = Aspire 5002
Series = 5000
Originally Win XP

This laptop only has CD. The only ISO I could find to fit is ubuntu 14.04.6 - server off http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.04/
Installed using entire partition eliminating XP.
Upgrade to 16.? LTS
Upgrade to 18.04.3 LTS
Installed Lubuntu-desktop

From there I cannot login. Screen change to black, changes back to login GUI.
CTR+ALT+F1
I can login and I have tried many of the suggestion in the Forum but still not there.
I am not totally new to command line but not use to it and I fumble through it.
Please help if you know how to solve my issue.

Thx,
Bob

Synaptic says no broken packages. If I try to install "curl" via Synaptic, I get a "broken package" error.

I recently installed TensorFlow and CUDA, which have way too many specific package requirements. Some kind of version pinning problem?

Not asked for root/admin password during install

This is the first time I have used Ubuntu, and I am installing it via an ISO disk I downloaded. I'm at the screen that asks for Your Name and User Name. My past experience has been with Centos where one enters the password for the Super User during the install and then the name and password for a user. I am not seeing that with Ubuntu.

I am installing over Centos 7 and told the installer to erase and install as a LVM.

What am I missing?

Many thanks...

Installing Ubuntu on my Lenovo laptop and stuck at end

Hello,

I'm installing Ubuntu on my Lenovo Ideapad 100s through a flash drive and Im stuck right at the end. The section I'm on is the "Who are you?" and I can't select any of the fields. My mouse works just fine and so does the keyboard. I cant skip past it but can't enter anything in. Is this a bug? And should I try re-installing? Also, I already erased Windows 10 from the drive and did a fresh install of Ubuntu. Thanks!

boot problems with multiple drives (boot-repair link included)

I have a gaming computer, so Windows 10 is its focus. I wanted access to the GPU for my serious work, so I was trying to give this machine an Ubuntu 18.04 install as well, without screwing up Windows. I didn't get there.

The hardware has been upgraded through the years. Every time I upgrade, I typically install the current Windows flavor on a new drive, but include the old hard drives on the side. It is now sporting four hard drives going back 8 to 10 years.

After installing Ubuntu from a USB stick, it defaulted to booting to a grub command prompt (not menu; prompt "grub>" or whatever). Or I can choose a specific boot drive from the BIOS and get Windows to boot still (yay!). But the two BIOS boot options that claim to be "ubuntu" only take me to the grub command prompt.

I have attempted boot-repair's recommended fixes, with no change. It's output is at this link:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/qTCmVh7jzj/

To help you navigate that info:
  • The Windows 10 that I want to keep running is on nvme. nvme0n1p4 appears to be the bulk of the OS and data.
  • The new Ubuntu 18.04 install is on sdc5 (and the swap that was to go with it is sdc6). But I haven't been able to boot it yet.
  • There is an old Ubuntu 12.04 at sda5 -- I don't think I care about that one any longer.
  • The rest of sdc, the rest of sda, and all of sdb are old Windows drives. They possibly include old OS versions and definitely include data I'd like to preserve.
  • I had the install USB stick inserted when I ran boot-repair, so sdd is the USB stick.

The hardware should all be fine. The live USB of 18.04 worked/works fine.

How can I reach a state where I can either:
  • a) have a boot menu choosing Windows or Ubuntu, or
  • b) boot to Windows unless I direct the BIOS to boot from something Ubuntu.

Thanks so much for any help sorting this out!

A while back, i tried to obtain a vid player from the miro site. I was unable because there is no release file. I installed "videos," which is working fine. The problem is, now whenever I open the software updater it gives a message as follows:

Code:

Unable to download updates:

How do I get rid of this? Thanks.

Qosmio x305 q705 black screen and nvidia driver

$

Hi all

I have a toshiba qosmio x305 q705 laptop which runs only in ubuntu_
-nouveau, because i suffer from the chronic problem of black screen whenever i install the nvidia drivers.

I have read on the internet that people have worked around this problem by a so called riva tuner program which changed the power consumption settings of the gpu (nvidia geforce 9700m gts in my case)

I was wondering if it is possible for me to make an underclocking on the settings of my gpu similar to this rivatuner. But the problem is whenever i install the nvidia drivers all i see is the nvidia logo for a couple of seconds and then the screen goes black. I can not run anything and neither can i communicate with the driver or the nvidia-settings to make adjustments. Installing the driver with prescribed downclock settings perhaps could help. Or logging as the root (i can run the computer in the recovery mod) and make adjustments there would be great but in that environment the driver is not loaded as far as i know.

So if you can help me run my computer with its original drivers, i will be greatful.

Thank you.

[ubuntu] With only Ubuntu 19.10 installed: No sound, screen brightness control and wifi

Dear Everyone !

I had Windows installed on a 1 TB internal hard drive inside a
HP Pavilion laptop.

Everything was working fine.

I replaced the 1TB internal hard drive with a 2TB internal hard drive.

After installing only Ubuntu 19.10 on the 2TB internal hard drive (with
no Windows or Mac operating systems installed alongside Ubuntu 19.10).

I now have no sound control. Also, when I try to play an audio file VLC
media player says:
Audio output failed. The audio device default could not be used.
No such file or directory.

I only have Ethernet connection no wifi internet connection,

I also have no screen brightness control.

Very disappointing compared to the Windows installation.

All of these kind of hardware drivers issues makes it extremely hard
work for a member of "Joe Public !!" to install and use Linux.

I reckon it must put a lot of people of from persisting in doing so.

Thereby making many people more inclined to go back to using
Windows or Mac OSX where hardware drivers appear to install
themselves more by "Magic" !!

Can anyone please help me with these issues.

Thanks !!

Ubuntu 16 to 18 upgrade issues, dependancies conflicts

$

Hello,

I'm new to Linux and was trying to upgrade Ubuntu 12 on a virtual server for a friend. It upgraded to 14 and 16 without major issues, I used "apt-get -f install" at one point and it fixed itself. I followed a lot of tutorials and forum posts God bless those people :)

Issues arised during upgrade from 16 to 18. It gave some error with a very long report, and now shows dependancies error and "apt-get -f install" cannot fix it, it's running in circles giving same error.

It seems when I log in via SSH it says Welcome to Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS. But then also "New release '16.04.6 LTS' available. Run 'do-release-upgrade' to upgrade to it."

It also has Webmin and Webmin says reboot is pending but it cannot reboot there (nothing happens) or in terminal (command is missing). I'm not sure it would even boot up in current state. I tried:

Code:

sudo shutdown -r now
sudo: shutdown: command not found

sudo reboot now
sudo: reboot: command not found

sudo systemctl reboot
sudo: systemctl: command not found

Does anyone know what the issue might be and ways to fix it?

I didn't try removing/auto cleaning dependancies yet as was afraid it might remove some important stuff like some people mentioned.

Here is the error about dependancies, it appears regularly and "apt-get install systemd --dry-run" is just an example"

Code:

apt-get install systemd --dry-run
NOTE: This is only a simulation!
apt-get needs root privileges for real execution.

I was planning to try removing avahi-daemon, then upstart, then install systemd, ubuntu-minimal and avahi-daemon, and upstart again and then try to reboot but not sure it would work and I'm concerned it wouldn't boot up and since it's virtual server if it breaks I would probably have to delete it and create a new one but would prefer to keep it as it has some data.

Thank you!

[ubuntu] Nvidia forgot the registry key,

System: Ubuntu 18.04
graphic card: nvidia 750Ti (-390 driver)

Last Sunday after booting first on that day, my nvidia graphic card wasn't recognised anymore and also not the monitor. Looking into the graphical part of nvidia settings, I saw that there was no profile listed. When I put in nvidia-settings into the terminal, I got an error message in the terminal, that told me that the registry key could not be found. Lacking the in-depth knowledge, I purged all things nvidia due to advice I got via Mastodon (federated social network) and went back to noveau, the standard driver, for now.

Making sure I didn't have a hardware problem, I tested my drives and they all came out fine, without any errors. Therefore I conclude that it has to be a software issue. However I need the proprietary driver for some games at some point, so I do wonder if the same happens when I again install the drivers from the packages (additional drivers). Should I just try or wait a few days, as I saw in a German forum that other people had likely problems?

Win 7 Ubuntu 18.04 dual boot UEFI

Soooo... let's go. Win7 has run out of support and I'm pulling the plug on the OS.

I've been trying to install Ubuntu alongside my Win7 install for quite some time (months), unsuccessfully until now. Every time I install I boot from a live USB stick, install goes flawlesslly, but when rebooting it dives directly into Win7.

After pressing ESC key on boot, the only bootable OS showing up is Win7.

My BIOS is set to boot in EFI mode. So I burned an ISO image using GPT EFI. USB boots OK, but normally the machine boots directly into windows. Also tried an ISO image burnt in MBR and BIOS/EFI using Rufus. No luck.

There is no option in the BIOS to select which OS to boot first.

There is no Secure Boot or Fast Boot option either in BIOS or Windows.

I thoroughly read all of what I could find regarding UEFI and dual boot. As far as I can see, my copy of Win7 boots in EFI mode, thus Ubuntu should do the same.

Installed Boot-Repair, but before running a black box process (at least to me) I prefer to seek some advice. So I have not tried repairing the boot loader.

My partition info shows an EFI system partition 260Mb in size.

Attached is the result of the Boot-Repair's Bootinfo Summary

Appreciate any insights this forum can give me.

[ubuntu] Preseed file for automating Install of desktop Ubuntu

I have been successful in using a preseed file to automate a desktop install of Ubuntu 18.04, i can pick different desktops and they work. But using the same info in a 19.04 install and it does not select any desktop. I am using the server ISO file as i did in 18.04 so in theory preseed should be similar i believe. Does anyone have an example preseed file they use when installing a 19.04 with a graphical desktop? thanks.

I had a dual boot machine with Windows and Ubuntu 18.04. The latest Ubuntu update introduced an issue with gnome due to my nvidia GT 730 video card - Ubuntu would hang on start up on the gnome display manager. I decided to install Mint to work around this. The install failed while it was trying to update grub. Now grub won't start except for the grub prompt. I tried to use boot-repair on the mint boot disk to fix. No luck. I tried to restore the MBR using boot-repair. No luck. Can someone help me?

[ubuntu] 16.04 LTS - can't update

$

Good afternoon,

I'm running 16.04 LTS, and the Update icon has disappeared from the System Settings list. I don't know how, when or why that happened. I need to update/upgrade because the version of Firefox is too old (63.03), and I can't access some on-line webinars (they only support Firefox versions newer than 68). I had a problem with an update a couple years ago, when after the update my GUI and desktop disappeared. I worked with the Forum to fix that problem. Maybe that was when this problem started. Every now and then the OS sends me a notice about updating, and when I click the "Update" button, nothing happens.

Any suggestions on how to go about upgrading to 18.04 LTS or 19.10?

My laptop is a Lenovo Flex 3-1480. It's set up as dual-boot, Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Can I just download 18.04 and install it over 16.04? If that were to happen, I won't lose any data or software. And I think it would still keep the Windows partition, since Windows 10 is already installed and has a partition/size on the hard drive.

Thanks,

Paul
