[ubuntu] Updating to kernel 3.5.0-23, ubuntu won't boot up

I updated Ubuntu 12.10. The most updated version on my computer now uses kernel 3.5.0-23. However, when if I select that version to boot into at the GRUB, all I get is a black screen with a flashing white underscore at the top. It stays there indefinitely. I have to boot into an older version of the kernel (I think 3.5.0-17).

Why is this the case and how can I fix it?
