mid way through upgrading my GUI basically died on me, the upgrade i think is almosted finished but gksu is prompting for a password based on a process(seen via htop) with

Quote:

gksu --desktop /usr/share/applications/update-manager.desktop -- /tmp/update-manager-Yj6bJ4/precise
How can I, from the commandline I'm stuck in, respond to gksu asking for a password so I can finish whatever it wants to do?

Is it possible to kill the X server, restart it and be giving the prompt instead?

SOME INFO:
according to ssh, the system claims to be 12.04.1 now
The GUI only leaves me with a mouse and a bottom slice of the background
