[ubuntu] Nvidia 7025 does not offer any effects?

I have installed 12.04 (for LTS) on a box with built-in nvidia 7025. The nvidia-settings show this as working. The configuration had been created with nvidia-xconfig.
It does work, but even the normal Unity desktop fails to work, there are no panels, only a black stripe where the top panel would have its lower end. No way to leave (log off) normally. No launcher.
Unity 2D however works fine - so I assume the problem is with the effects (compiz).

Is nvidia 7025 not supported any longer?
What else could I do?

I have attached the conf and log fil(s) - the latter slightly shortened for the size limit; for the current session (2D).
