I've just bought a Sony Vaio 13 Pro and tried to run before I could walk by over-writing the pre-installation of Windows 8 with Ubuntu 13.10. I've installed Ubuntu from a USB, but it won't boot into it. It simply returns to the Sony boot error screen saying that "Your VAIO failed to start Windows" and that the operating system was not found. All I can do is boot from the live USB and access system information from there. I've generated boot info which can be seen at http://paste.ubuntu.com/6530050/
I inadvertently deleted the EFI partition along the way, which I've replaced, but I don't know if that's something that's screwed me over. With the benefit of hindsight, I shouldn't have installed over Windows 8, so at least I could have had something working on the machine.
I've not previously done an awful lot with regards to setting up new operating systems, but I've muddled through up to now. I'm out of options now though and I don't really understand what the boot information is telling me.
I've followed the information at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI and I've installed and run Boot Repair, which is how I got the report generated in the first place. I tried the repair option on that tool, which carried out the following:
This setting would reinstall the grub-efi-amd64-signed of sda2, using the following options: sda1/boot/efi,
Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s
This didn't make any difference and it still returned to the same error screen when I removed the USB and rebooted.
If I change the boot mode from UEFI to Legacy, or turn off Secure Boot, it won't let me boot from the Ubuntu USB - it just returns to the Sony boot error screen again.
I'd really appreciate any assistance anyone can give me, as I'm currently staring at a very expensive non-working piece of kit :(
