Securing Ubuntu Remote VPS Connection

I managed to login remotely via root, but I need to secure the connection. This is ubuntu-13.04-x86 VPS, configured to connect over VNC on remmina.

How would I tunnel the conection over SSH, and would that be secure enough to stop any attacks into the server?
