Black Screen w/o backlight after booting from disc

Hi all,

So i've recently purchased a new laptop and after trying to install ubuntu i've come across a problem.

Whenever I boot from disc I get to a splash screen, then a terminal with a blinking underscore for a few seconds. After this, the screen goes black and the backlight turns off. Any thoughts on how to solve this?

EDIT: Forgot to mention, the laptop has an nVidia GeForce GT 650M graphics card and an intel i5-3340M CPU.
