Can't connect to internet after upgrade to raring

The network connection is fine, Wi-Fi devices connect without a problem. The computer tells me it is connected by wired & wireless connection, but when I go in to edit the wired connection there are no addresses. It isn't detecting anything.

The upgrade also completely uninstalled grub and any help files I was previously able to access offline. I can boot into the drive from an old grub list on a second drive but can't install grub without a connection. Strangely, I can't actually boot into the second drive, just into the first one from the grub list. I'm not really worried about that right now though.

I'm sure I should know this, but how do I begin to fix the internet connection not being detected at all?

As I said, the network is fine. It's only the main computer plugged into the router that can't pick it up after the upgrade. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'll be watching Roku for the next little while while I scratch my head.

I may have access to a laptop when the housemate returns, but for now I'm on the smartphone.

Housemate's laptop connects to internet fine, as I thought it would. I set network controls to manual and entered IP, gateway, net mask & DNS manually. No difference. I can't update anything. I don't even know what to look for. What could possibility be keeping my computer from connecting to the internet? Could there be a piece of software missing or a corrupted file?
