I have a laptop with dual-boot WinXP/Ubuntu 12.04 (and Grub).
The Ubuntu OS has some problems and I need to do a new install, preferably Xubuntu 12.04 64 bit, ON THE SAME partition. Unfortunately, the DVD drive is dead and I have to do without.
Using a variety of software (Disk Creator, Unetbootin, Universal USB Creator, LiveLinux USB Creator, dd...) I tried to make a bootable USB flash stick. I downloaded both Ubuntu and Xubuntu, 32 and 64 bit, from 2 different sources.
No matter what I did, the boot doesn't work, I get the message "boot error". (The BIOS does detect the USB drive and displays the boot option "USB hard disk".)
Interestingly, if I make instead a WinXP bootable USB flash drive - using WinToFlash -, it works fine!
What other method of doing the job could I use?
