[ubuntu] /dev/disk/by-uuid/... does not exist

Hi all,

Trying to install Ubuntu on my laptop for the first time. I used the 12.04 LTS Windows installer and it completed without complaint. Then I rebooted, chose Ubuntu as the OS, and got this error:

The interesting thing is that the /dev/disk/by-uuid directory does not exist. Any ideas?
