[ubuntu] Php installed but not working

I am on 12.04.1 with apache and php5 installed. Everything is working great on this server but I can't get php to be recognized in the browser. The php5 mod is present in the apache mods enabled and available. When I try to execute a php script in the browser it will ask what application I want to open it with.

Any ideas how to debug.
