I am hoping that a Microsoft-esque Solution (re-install OS) will not be required.
Older home-rolled desktop system, 3.06GHz HT P4 with 2GB RAM and plenty of HDD space.
Dualboot XPPro & 12.04LTS. OSs installed last summer and Ubuntu updates ran smoothly ... until they didn't ... ;) ... a month, or so, ago.
My startup/selection screen shows kernel 3.2.0-32-generic-pae. The Problem occurred during an update group that first included 3.2.0.33 ... it returned a FAILED message. No power spikes occurred (UPS-protected system), something just hiccupped. I also have 2 laptops with 12.04LTS loaded (both dual-boots, one, each, XPPro & Vista) and they have experienced no such issues.
Now the updates include 3.2.0.34 and this also fails. Interesting, though (to me, at least) ... while the startup/selection screen reflects 3.2.0.32, the Update Manager indicates that the currently-installed Kernel is 3.2.0.33.
I captured the "details" of the FAIL and provided them below. Note that some of the information in Image 1 is duplicated in Image 2.
Yes, early-on, I turned off HT in BIOS and let the Update Manager try the .33 update again ... No Joy.
Thank you for helping me this corrected!
