[ubuntu] 16.04 to 18.04 without losing x11vnc ability

$

Hi all

I have a box that is not easy accessible and I use x11vnc to manage it.
I'd like to upgrade it but making sure that I don't lose remote connectivity.

In any event even if I need to restore remote access, I need to do all from command line.

One idea I was considering to make change where instead of x11vnc I use standard ubuntu screen share.

But wanted to ping smart people on this forum for ideas.

Thx

Second time installing Ubuntu, second time FREEZE at "installing the grub2 package"

I am on the second attempt to install ubuntu, this time with a purchased installation dvd. The first was my own created usb.
Both times the screen froze at "installing the grub2 package." I am only a beginner, have had little experience going into BIOS, etc, but I need help, please.
I used ubuntu years ago and want my old laptop to run it. To clarify, I chose to install ubuntu NOT alongside windows10 and I chose to wipe everything.
I will be so grateful for any help! Please make it clear to this newbie. Thanks so much!

Installation issues with PC Specialist Lafite Pro 14" / Insyde H2O Bios Intel RST

Hi,

I'm having great difficulty in getting Ubuntu installed on my Lafite Pro 14". During the Ubuntu installation, when you get to the screen to partition the disk and install, the NVMe disk isn't showing up as an option. When running things like fdisk from the live USB, it cannot see the disk at all. It appears to be because the Insyde H2O BIOS is too restrictive and I cannot disable the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST).

PC Specialist so far are refusing to provide any support as I'm trying to use Linux, despite it being very clear when I configured the laptop that my intention was to have no OS shipped with it and to install Linux.

If anyone can review the spec below and advise on what I can do to get Ubuntu installed on my laptop I'd appreciate it!

Thanks

WIndows 7 doesn't boot now, Boot configuration is corrupt

This might be caused by an improper shutdown.

System Repair says it can't fix the problems, in the details I see

Boot configuration is corrupt.
Repair action: partition table repair

Before trying to fix it running chkdsk at the command prompt and ruin Ubuntu, is there something I can do from Ubuntu?

Thanks

Dell 8930 w Nvidia 1050ti with Linux kernel 4.15.0-50 was running fine. I had the Nvidia drivers loaded and my machine was useful. However I needed a better gpu for ML so I swapped out to a Nvidia 2070 super. Booting now takes me to black screen. I followed the most common recommmendation which was to edit grub by adding ‘nomodeset’. Now it hangs on boot with the Nvidia persistence daemon error

What’s another way to fix this?

Booting problems not resolved after boot repair

I installed Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop OS alongside my (originally) Windows 10 laptop. All works well till I boot into Windows. Then Windows boots ok for the first time, but after restart the boot options do not show up and I am unable to boot into either OSes.

I ran boot repair by using "try Ubuntu" option from a live CD, but it did not seem to fix it. Here is the boot-repair report: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/sXxysf4M8B/

I am using a Lenovo ideapad 110, and am only a beginner with Ubuntu.

the grub-efi-amd64 package failed to install into /target/.

I am trying to install 19.10 Ubuntu alongside Windows 10. But I kept getting the error:
the grub-efi-amd64 package failed to install into /target/.

Win 10 is already existing in the hard disk. Now I can’t even boot up Win 10 because every time I boot the PC, it always bring me to the GNU Grub CLI (why?).

How do I recover from this issue?

[lubuntu] Help with calamares installer

$

Let me start by saying that I'm a noob. OK, a brief history of my situation. I fought with my computer since mid 2018 to install lubuntu 18.04. I finally got it in at the beginning of Feb this year(couple of weeks ago.The way I accomplished this was to run ubiquity -b from terminal to install without bootloader, then run bootrepair, After that I had to boot into os and purge and reinstall grub. Now, with that said, I'm having trouble installing lubuntu19.10 into my computer alongside lubuntu 18.04 and windows 10. I fear I my have to do like before. My question at this point is, can I make calamares install without boot loader like I did with ubiquity? I don't want to just upgrade my current install because I want to "test drive" the lxqt desktop before committing totally. My other thought is to do a new install of 18.04 where I want 19.10, then just upgrade that one, and I'll have all three os available. As always, any thoughts or tips will be greatly appreciated. As an off topic question, I see a lot of people with little quotes at the end of their posts. How do you do that? Is it something you have set to do automatically or do you type that in every time? Lol...just curious. Thanks

I haven't used linux in a while, I want to install kubuntu 19.10 but on my pc secondary internal hdd, the main disk is a ssd for windows and core apps, I want the linux boot loader on the second drive (which also has games/apps/files for windows) so if I want to get rid of the linux install it won't leave me with an unbootable system. Can someone walk me through or at least point me to a post/documentation that can help me, pls

Ubuntu 18.04.4 with Nvidia gtx 1650 super

$

I just bought a new gpu. Nvidia gtx 1650 super. Tried to run Ubuntu 18.04.4 that i already had installed. The pc freezes after i log in. Tried some stuff i found online but ended up braking the grub and generally my pc. I have now reinstalled everything in my pc. I am using one drive with Ubuntu, one drive with windows 10 and one hdd for storage. I formatted and clean installed Ubuntu in the ubuntu driver. Grub broke my windows drive as well. And now i am reinstalling windows. Even after the fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04.4 I still have the same issue. Ubuntu freezes after log in. What is wrong with Nvidia and Ubuntu? And how can i use Ubuntu without unplugging the gpu every time i want to use Ubuntu? I read about installing the 390 driver version but somehow i couldn't..? And then i tried to change something in the grub that i read in a thread and everything went south... Please help!

Update: i fixed a problem with the grub and i can boot to Windows now. My mistake was stupid... Still need help with the Ubuntu though. Still freeze after log in

[ubuntu] Trying to resize EXT4 partition with MiniTool

Hi:

I can resize Win 7 partition but MiniTool only lets me move EXT4 partition between two unallocated partitions. Currently there is a 230GB unallocated partition before EXT4 and a 0GB unallocated partition after. The UP and DOWN arrows to chabge the size don't work.

Do I have to move EXT4 to remain before the unallocated partition so to enlarge it later?

Thanks

Hi,

I'm trying to pair my laptop with my TV screen, thing is I cannot switch the audio output through the HDMI cable I connected.
I went in "Settings" but there's no way to reach an audio panel there. I know Ubuntu Studio it uses built-in Jack Server apparate, but, nonetheless I'd like to have an easy icon sound tools in the panel,

any way to achieve this?

thanks in advance for your kind attention,

[ubuntu] Preseed Configuration of 18.04.4 LTS / unattended install - lang prompting

$

Hello and a good morning to all !

after a ten years break, i came back to Linux (yay!) and got a new challenge ;-)

I'm working on a preseed-image for my environment, testing "Cubic" and most things are working.
But there are still the questions at boot-time for region, language and country. So i think, there must be still something wrong and i hope you can help me a little.

The goal is, to get the system for de_DE-locale at finish, but i don`t really care about the installation dialog, could be in english, but i dont want to get any dialog, because the installation should run totally unattended.

Here is my preseed-file :

mybeaver.seed (ok, this name is just for example ;-)

Code:

in /isolinux/langlist
i deleted everything but 'de'

and i changed timeout in

/isolinux/isolinux.cfg

to 30 what means 3 sec.

So, i think many of that options are redundant and maybe i dont need them.

With the Cubic-Tool, i was able to preinstall some progs, so i got a very nice Install-ISO.

So, i would thank you very much for a little help with my challenge :-)

[UbuntuGnome] Ubunte freeze on startup for 90 seconds

$

Hello fellow Ubuntu-fans,

I recently swapped a disk from a traditional HDD to an SSD. Since then I notice Ubuntu freezes during startup for 90 seconds. There are a number of disks in my system: (output of lsblk)
sda 8:0 0 465,8G 0 disk
└─sda1 8:1 0 465,8G 0 part /mnt/backups
sdb 8:16 0 111,8G 0 disk
├─sdb1 8:17 0 102,5G 0 part /
├─sdb2 8:18 0 1K 0 part
└─sdb5 8:21 0 9,4G 0 part [SWAP]
sdc 8:32 0 223,6G 0 disk
└─sdc1 8:33 0 223,6G 0 part /mnt/ssd
sdd 8:48 0 931,5G 0 disk
└─sdd1 8:49 0 931,5G 0 part /mnt/storage
sde 8:64 0 465,8G 0 disk
└─sde1 8:65 0 465,8G 0 part /mnt/storage2
sdj 8:144 0 1,8T 0 disk
└─sdj1 8:145 0 1,8T 0 part /mnt/usb

The disk I recently swapped is SDC (mounted as /mnt/ssd), formatted as EXT4 primary partition. It is NOT the boot-partition. In fact, the old disk wasn't even really used. There was however a second Lubuntu installation present. (perhaps GRUB is causing problems?)

The complete dump of DMESG is in the link below.

https://pastebin.com/tgDHaP9H

uname -a output:
Linux jupiter 5.3.0-28-generic #30~18.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 17 06:14:09 UTC 2020 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

If anyone has a clue why this happens I would be very happy. Normally my system boots in seconds..... this is irritating.

Thanks in advance!

Greetings Martin
