Problem with installation

It appear almost right after i choose any element in grub menu (both "try without install" and "install" items). Img. I was waiting about 10 minutes but nothing changed.

Appearance in order:
1) GRUB menu, choosing item;
2) Input strip;
3) Randomly located green and white stripes (i guess it supposed to be something like loading bar?);
4) Nothing happening for about 20-30 sec;
5) This unknown symbols.

Ubuntu was loaded from "http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/ubuntu-16.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso", used rufus a few times (with checks for bad sectors).

My specs:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P
CPU: AMD FX-8350
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
RAM: Kingston HyperX (8 GB DDR3)
SSD: Crucial CT256MX
Power Supply: Corsair VS650

Windows 10 installed right now. The problem is probably my PC, but installer must display correct error anyway, right? I can run any needed tests.

Hi, today I upgraded my Ubuntu 16.04.02 from 4.4.0-79 to 4.4.0-81. When I rebooted I could not login on the desktop any more, every time this appeared in syslog:

[ubuntu] Install screen leads to black screen

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 16.04.2 on a partition of my hard drive. I have created a bootable USB drive to install it, I reboot and select the USB drive and it takes me to the screen where I can try ubuntu without installing, install ubuntu, check for disk errors, etc., and whenever I select any of those options my screens quit receiving signals. After about 30 seconds to a minute of this, I hear the two drum-like error noises and the screens remain off.

Anyone experience anything similar or might have an idea of what is going on and how to fix it?

[ubuntu] What to Backup

I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I recently had a system crash and had to reinstall the OS. I used rsync to backup my home-folder and could recover all my data. However, it cost me a pretty penny in downloads (and time) to restore all the software again to what it was before the crash. Now my question is, what other system folders can I safely backup and restore (using rsync) to minimise all this costly downloads, should something like this happen again?

Cannot Get Past Bootloader

I am having a lot of difficulty trying to install Ubuntu. I've been trying both 17.04.2 and 16.4 which have been burned to a DVD (I did try 17.4 written to a USB, a few weeks ago on my first attempt but also had no success). Essentially I can't even get past the bootloader. I've disabled many of the recommended settings on my mobo (fastboot, I've set my graphics to on board, grabbed a VGA monitor and even PHYSICALLY removed my graphics card and still no issues.) I've tried the various boot commands such as
Code:

nomodeset acpi=off noacpi
.

My mobo gives me the option to boot the drive I have the disc loaded into with UEFI and AHCI, I've tried both options. No success. At this point I am completely at a loss of what to try next. I am 100% certain there is nothing wrong with the discs. I have the 16.4 on a VM at this moment, and I know I tried 17 on the other disc as well. Both of them were installed from burned discs.

My Specs;
Intel i5 3570K 3.4ghz (cpu)
Asrock Extrem4 Z77 (motherboard)
Nvidia EVGA GTX 780 8gb (gpu physically removed at time of post)
Gskill 1866Mhz 8GB DDR3 (RAM)
Samsung 840 Pro 256gb (OS/Programs SSD)
Samsunsg 850 EVO 512GB (secondary SSD)

During upgrade of 16.04.2 Ubuntu asks to change to secure boot - Now can't access ubu

Forum,

During a routine update of 16.04.2 I was asked to create a secure boot password. Did the install but tells me I need to enable secure boot now. I go into the bios menu and no longer can change the secure boot which is now set to enabled. It was turned off before the update. Can't run boot repair since the secure boot is enabled. I have password for bios but still can't change the secure boot.

When did this change (secure boot enable) come into play? How do I resolve this issue?

I'm running a Acer Aspire E5-575 laptop. Have the newest Ubuntu 16.04.2.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Bests,
phil s

Can't get past the installation process...

Hey all, I've been attempting (with very little success) to install Ubuntu 16.04.2 onto a Toshiba Satellite CL15t-B1204 from a Mac running OS X 10.6.8. I've finally made a drive with the iso file, but I've been unable to progress past the installation phase. Upon completing the process, the restart brings me back to the "Install Ubuntu," "Try Ubuntu Without Installing," etc screen. I tried accessing the BIOS, and after doing so I found that switching from the USB back to the internal disk upon start up produces the same initial installation menu. Is there anything additional that I have to do manually to ensure that the computer is reading the internal disk during a boot or reboot?

[server] Ubuntu Server Installation Failure Error

$

Hello all,

I've been resurrecting old machines with ubuntu and ubuntu server for a while now, but on my latest project, I've run into an error that I've never come across before. I'm trying to install ubuntu server 16.04 onto a Compaq Prosignia 740 server with a live disk. The image I am using is the i386 network installer directly from Ubuntu's website, and I burnt the image to a cd+r using InfraRecorder at 10x write speed.

The disk spools up just fine and drops me at the Ubuntu installation options screen, and when I select Install and hit enter it looks like it's going to run just fine. However, after about ten seconds, the code below is displayed and the process stops. Like I said, I've never run into this before, so if anyone could help me understand what is causing the error or even just what the code means I would greatly appreciate it. I have a feeling that it's a problem with the way I'm writing the disk image, but I could be totally wrong on that. Thanks!

[ubuntu] ubuntu server update failed and now cannot boot

$

System notified me that updates where available (like it does almost every other day....) including a update to ubuntu base.

I notice that it was saying a package had failed (it looked like grub2??? and it was failing with kernel image 4.4.0-81 not being able to write to my disk....)
I allowed the report process to run ... then the report process failed indicating this update had already failed and been reported.

System rebooted and now get this on my screen (attached failure.jpg)

Any help on how to revert? I can't seem to get grub to come up.

Thanks in advance (really in need of help!)

[ubuntu] Ubuntu and flavors won't install

$

Hello, everyone. Recently, I decided to make my Windows 10 desktop computer dual boot Ubuntu or one of its flavors. I've used bootable flash drive utilities in the past to make a bootable flash drive that can install Ubuntu. However, recent attempts to install Ubuntu have ended in one of three outcomes after selecting either start or install Ubuntu. (It should be noted that I was trying to install the latest version of Ubuntu, which is 17.04.)

a). The blinking command cursor shows up, then a series of about 10 horizontal static-like lines appear and it freezes there.
b). A series of errors with the word "nouveau" appears and hangs there.
c). The computer doesn't output any video signal and the monitor goes to sleep.

I tried to use an earlier version of Ubuntu and it still didn't work. I've tried 3 different utilities: Rufus, UNetootin, and Universal USB Installer. I even tried Manjaro and it still gave me the same problems (It did give me the colorful boot screen when choosing to install or start though.). However, when I tried Linux Mint, it was able to install, run, and boot up fine alongside Windows 10. I should mention that I have been downloading the ISOs as torrents rather than the direct ISOs. Linux Mint was also downloaded from a torrent. I tried a different flash drive (a micro SD card in a USB adapter) and no change whatsoever. I also used Windows' built-in bootable DVD maker to burn the ISO data to a DVD with the same results.

My specs:

AMD FX-8320
EVGA GTX 970
ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0
Kentek 750W PSU
8GB G.SKILL RAM

Any sort of help will be appreciated. Thank you.

[ubuntu] Ubuntu trying to install on my USB drive instead of my hard drive

$

I am trying to install Ubuntu on my laptop off of a USB drive, but ubuntu keeps trying to install on the USB rather than the hard drive.

When I try installing it using a 4GB usb, I get an error saying that there is not enough memory because my computer has only 4GB of space, but ubuntu requires 8GB.

When I try installing it using a 16GB USB drive, one of two problems occurs

1) I get past the space limitation, but I get stuck at the "installation type" menu. If I click "install now", I get the message "no root file system is defined; please correct this from the partitioning menu". If I click "+", "-", or "change", I get the following error:

http://i.imgur.com/wZWEiAf.png
http://i.imgur.com/3epLudB.png
http://i.imgur.com/mavRJhi.png

2) I get a warning that says "Error fsyncing/closing/dev/sda1: input/output error". If I click ignore, I repeatedly get the same error with sda2 through sda5 and the sda without a number. After all of those, even more warnings/errors popup (see screenshots below). I get to selecting the timezone and creating a user account, and the installation starts, but it does not ever finish.

http://i.imgur.com/zzd1IKe.png

Here is information about my laptop:
Model: Acer Aspire E1
RAM: 4096 MB
I don't know how much memory the hard drive has because I have no operating system installed right now and don't know how to check

I have safeboot disabled, and I have AHCI mode enabled in the BIOS settings.

Do you guys know what the issue could be?

Ubuntu installation issue.

Hi!

I installed ubuntu on my laptop with 0 problems a couple of weeks ago. Today i used the same usb boot drive to install on my desktop computer. I got to the boot menu where i can choose if i want to try ubuntu or install it. I tried both options and ended up with the same result. After pressing the screen goes black and thereafter a split second of |||| in a row over the screen and then the screen shuts off. I know it sounds weird but I would really appreciate some help.

I turned off fast boot, that didn't help, but i cant seem to find the secure boot option.
My motherboard is an MSi B85M-E45.

Thanks in advance.

Printer-Canon MX870 botched install

I am afraid that I messed up installing an MX870 printer on my 16.04 LTS laptop. Instead of just going to System Settings/Printers I downloaded a driver from Canon Singapore then I used instructions on how to install them using the Terminal. No joy. A friend of mine with a similar laptop and 16.04 has an MX922 printer an-d showed me the right way to install. Way easier and it works.:/ So, I opened up System Settings/Printers on both machines and they are very different. The device URL on the working one is dnssd://Canon%20MX920%20series._ipp._tcp.local/?uuid=00000000-0000-1000-8000-D8492FDF40AB and on the bad one it starts with
cnijnet:/88-87-17-3D-.....I am sure that my failed driver install using the Terminal is why they are so different. Other than reinstalling 16.04 is there something I can do to get the MX870 working? I tried deleting the printer and reinstalling from System Settings/Printers and it finds the printer on the network but and all looks good until I try to print. The jobs wind up in the Que and won't print and except for the Device URL both printers Properties look very much alike. I hope this makes sense I know it's a long explanation. Thanks.

New Install Ubuntu 16.04 with ZFS

Hi, Hoping somebody can share some advice. I have a Dell R710 with 6 6Tb sata drives and 36 gigs of memory, and 2 processors, 1 perc 710 Raid controller. I also have a IBM ServeRaid M1015 46M0861 SAS/SATA PCI-e RAID Controller LSI SAS9220-8i card. I am wanting to install Ubuntu 16.04 and use ZFS for storing all of my data. I am looking for some help in devising the overall strategy. Do I configure the drives on the raid controller? If so, what is the best strategy. Do I use a 2 drive strategy for the OS, then install ZFS, and use the other drives to create the pool?

Thanks in advance.
