[ubuntu] Regarding (X)Ubuntu 12.10 & Lens/amazon
Hi all, and thanks in advance for your comments:
I'm currently using Ubuntu 12.04, and quite happy with it. I'm using the Unity desktop, and I've got no major complaints.
My problem/question is:
I've been reading on the news, forums, and different websites that the new version in 12.10, which i'll eventually have to upgrade to if I plan on using Ubuntu, has a lens/amazon function on the dash that sends queries to amazon. Now, this disturbs me a bit, since I don't want to see "shopping recommendations" everytime I look for something, be they from amazon or from "future partners".
Does this new "function" only apply to the Unity desktop? If I switch to the Xfce desktop, will I be able to "save myself" from sending search data to amazon and/or shopping recommendations from them? Or will I have to entirely switch distributions, in order to evade this?
Again, many thanks in advance for your comments and/or help.
Regards,
Miguel.

[ubuntu] Problem with Wubi and Windows 7
Hi,
I would like to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer from Windows using Wubi, but I have a problem with it. Firstly I mount a CD image in a virtual drive via Daemon tool. Next I start Wubi, fill all installation fields, and then I click next. Then Wubi starts to extract files, etc. After Wubi unpack system kernel new window should appear in which I will be asked to restart Windows, but that does not happen. Wubi window disappears and exit. When I check the partition on which I installed ubuntu there are some uncompressed files, but after restarting the computer, nothing happens. GRUB not showing up and Windows normally starts. I also tried to install Ubuntu 12.10, but the same thing happens. I have Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1. In attachment I enclose screenshots of last window with Wubi installation and what it unpacked to disk. Partition on which I install Ubuntu is a dynamic disk. Does this have any effect on the installation? If not, why I can not install the system?

How to install Xfce without xubuntu-desktop or ubuntustudio-desktop
I want to install Xfce without xubuntu-desktop or ubuntustudio-desktop (original Xfce 4.10, without extras). I too want to keep Unity (and Unity 2D) on my computer. Are the xfce-meta package great for that?

[all variants] Superblock warning - cannot resize partition
Hello,
I have 3 hard drive with the following partition setup
I have actually one for sdb (sdb1) and one for sdc(sdc1) but they are not shown with the above command "lsblk". Both occupies full capacities of each hard drive.
This is how I mount them
When I use gparted I get the same warning for sdb1 & sdbc1 partition (see attached screenshot)
fdisk -l
I cannot re-size or change sdb1 & sdc1 but both have data I can access normally.
It seems I have not partition for sdb & sdc disk but I can still use them and mount them directly without partition!
Any idea where to look in order to fix the situation?

[ubuntu] system freeze
Hi everybody,
I`m having trouble with ubuntu installation, to be specific every time after booting my system freezes, the only thing I can do is hard reset.
I cleared my hdd (all of them)and when ubuntu live starts and the desktop loads everything freezes. I managed to install ubuntu before it boots from cd, but after the installation it still freezes after a minute.
I`m trying to install a single system, the configuration worked fine with windows xp
I tried these versions Ubuintu 12.10 32bit, 12.04 32bit, 12.10 64bit, 12.04.1 LTS 64bt, 11.04 32 bit.
then i tried on Linux Mint 14.1 cinnamon 32bit
the same problem occurs.
I replaced my RAM, and the PSU still nothing
this is my configuration:
Amd Athlon 64 3000+
MBO dfi Infinity nF4X
nvidia geForce 6600
Kingmax 1GB DDR400
Kingmax 512MB DDR400
Crosair 512MB DDR400
Seagate Baracuda 80 GB HDD
WD 250 GB HDD
WD caviar green 1 TB
I did a memory test with Memtest86, and everything was fine
I read on forums that I should update the kernel, but I can`t do that because everything freezes after less then a minute
Please, please help I`m sweating over thins for a week now....

[ubuntu] Can't boot into system after dist-upgrade to 3.2.0-33 linux
I did a 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' a couple of weeks ago in Ubuntu 12.04 and was no longer able to boot into my system (Dell XPS 15z), getting the following error on a black screen that doesn't go anywhere:
On the grub boot screen I was able to select 'Previous Linux versions' and boot with 3.2.0-32 successfully.
After the latest upgrade (today) to 3.2.0-34, I thought the problem might have been fixed, but it gives the same error upon startup. But booting with 3.2.0-32 still works. How can I fix this so that I can keep up to date with the updates?
This may also be related: when installing Ubuntu 12.04 for the first time on this hardware I got some similar problems and resolved them as suggested on the forums by doing the following, but those settings still apply in the grub configuration:
Code:

[64 bit] installed 32-bit xubuntu on 64-bit dual-core.. should/can I upgrade?
My question has a few parts: I just installed the 32-bit version of xubuntu a couple days ago on a Dell optiplex GX620 with 486 MB SDRAM (i know) and a 3 GHz dual-core processor with 2 MB L2 cache memory.
I plan on adding 2 GB of RAM (this should be easy right?), bringing the specs up to just under 2.5 GB memory. I've heard that some of the advantages of 64-bit computing come with a larger available memory space, starting at 3 GB. Is there any reason to install 64-bit xubuntu? If so, is it possible to upgrade from the 32-bit version I currently have installed without having to reinstall everything else on here? And lastly, as things stand right now with me running the 32-bit system, if I am installing a program that has both 32-bit and 64-bit versions available, does it make a difference which one I install?
Thanks in advance!

[all variants] Need to identify an intermittent boot issue
I would like help looking at a problem before making a new bug report. This is the report from a Xubuntu 12.10 boot issue. The report is sloppy and possibly miscategorized under 'xorg'. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...g/+bug/1081819

[SOLVED] NTLoader + GRUB. Can I remove ntloader and use only GRUB?
I installed Ubuntu 12.10 via the windows executable (Wubi). After install my boot goes like this:
1) ntloader - Options "Windows" and "Ubuntu"
2) If I select "Ubuntu" it then displays GRUB which only lists my Ubuntu partition.
So ntloader and GRUB2 are both there.
I would like to get ntloader to go away completely and add my Windows partition into GRUB2. Result should be only GRUB2 on boot with Windows in the list but I am afraid I will break something since I am unfamiliar with Wubi.
Here is some info that might help:

[lubuntu] Change partition structure in running system
I am running a dual-boot system with Win7 and Ubuntu (10.04), currently not sharing any data between the two. I'd like to switch to a structure with separate partitions for each OS (as small as possible, as big as necessary) and data in a third partition that can be accessed by the other two.
I wonder whether it is possible to get there without reinstalling the OS.
Attached is a hardcopy of the current partition structure from GParted.

When I select 10.04, I get the blinking cursor of death, and when I choose it in recovery mode, I get a bunch of code then the cursor of death. [lubuntu] Unetbootin & Lubuntu 12.10
Hello,
I have a question I hope someone can help me with. I would like to install Lubuntu 12.10 on my computer (not Live CD, I want to install it on my HD as the only operating system).
I downloaded the Lubuntu 12.10 ISO file, and I downloaded the latest version on Unetbootin so I could install from USB Flash drive instead of CD ROM.
But Unetbootin doesn't list Lubuntu 12.10 on its "version" drop down menu. It has 12.04 but not 12.10. So does that mean I can't use Unetbootin?
Is there a work-around, or can somebody recommend another program to write an ISO to a USB Flash drive?
Thanks for any help.

[other] Having trouble settng up dual boot environment
Hey everybody,
I recently got a new PC, after my ancient one finally gave out. It came with Windows 8 preinstalled, and after five years of using Linux exclusively, I kind of want to keep Windows around so I can play some games without endless fiddling in Wine. I still want Ubuntu as my every day OS, though, so I wanted to set up a dual boot system.
So I downloaded a LiveCD image, burned it onto a DVD, and tried to run it. My PC wouldn't boot from the DVD, and I couldn't get into the BIOS (I can now), so I took the LiveCD up on its offer to help me boot from DVD.
I was presented with a nice menu offering the choice between Windows 8 and Ubuntu. I chose Ubuntu, and was greeted with an error message. Turns out I needed the 64 bit version. So I downloaded that, and installing Ubuntu onto the partition I had created for it was a breeze.
There's just one little problem: it's not dual boot. I have two possible boot partitions, one for Win 8, one for Ubuntu. If I set the BIOS to boot from the Win 8 partition, I get the nice menu from earlier, and selecting Win 8 works, but selecting Ubuntu makes the PC try to boot from CD again, which isn't what I want. If I set the BIOS to boot from the Ubuntu partition, it straight up boots into Ubuntu.
So, how do I fix it so I have a boot sequence that gives me two working options, one for Win 8 and one for Ubuntu?
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

[ubuntu] Size of precise repository
Hi!!
I want to download the 12.04 repository to my HDD in order to have an offline Ubuntu repo. I checked at http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/
and the whole precise repository
precise-backports/30-Nov-2012 05:55 - precise-proposed/03-Dec-2012 05:37 - precise-security/30-Nov-2012 05:55 - precise-updates/30-Nov-2012 05:55 - precise/is only ~10 GB. Is this correct? A colleague told me that it should be around 50 GB ...
Is this the correct link?
Thanks

[SOLVED] Trying to install...
Computer: Toshiba P870 Laptop
Drives: 2x 500 GB SATA
USB Boot: XUbuntu 11.10 Live USB
First attempt: Blocked by 'Secure Boot'...powered down by itself 1 minute later.
Second attempt: 'No bootable device -- Please restart system' (With the 750 GB drive with Windows on it, that was a given, but the USB stick's activity light didn't even try to light up this time)
Attempts 3, 4, and 5 using the other USB ports, one by one: Repeat of second attempt.
No BIOS logo, just black screen until the above results.
What can I do to get Secure Boot to disable itself, and then recognize the USB stick as bootable once again so I can get to installing XUbuntu on this machine?
Already tried, in an attempt to access the laptop's BIOS to turn off Secure Boot and alter the boot order: Holding F12 on boot, Fn+F12, F2, Fn+F2, F1, Fn+F1, ESC.... all any of this does is wait until 'No bootable device -- Please restart system' is on the screen...and then makes it spam its' way down the screen until the entire screen is full.
Sincerely,
Frustrated XUbuntu user on his ancient and about to crap itself out Gateway laptop.
Edit #1: (Adding more information)
According to this site (http://www.linlap.com/toshiba_satellite_p870), this laptop is compatible with XUbuntu (with some caveats)...but I can't even get the Live USB to work...and making a Live CD is not possible. My only other laptop lacks a working optical burner.

[ubuntu] Not installing any software
I installed some software on my machine and since then it refuses to install other here is the error I get below,
apt-get install vlc
Reading package lists... Done

vlc is already the newest version.
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
git-core : Depends: liberror-perl but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: curl but it is not going to be installed
libdigest-sha1-perl : Depends: perlapi-5.10.1 but it is not installable
libperl5.14 : Depends: perl-base (= 5.14.2-6ubuntu2.1) but 5.14.2-13 is to be installed

[ubuntu] Run Ubuntu Server from RAM
Hi.
I would like to boot Ubuntu Server from a USB disk / SSD to run from RAM.
One option would be to install/configure on an existing HDD and then convert to boot/run in RAM, optionally excluding filesystems that I would rather keep on disk.
Suggestions / pointers to useful tutorials would be appreciated. I haven't been able to find anything relatively recent (I'm thinking 12.04 probably) in this area.
